Holiday Inn Jasmine Suzhou4.0 out of 5.0

After a few days in Shanghai, we took the high speed rail to the nearby city of Suzhou to spend a few days somewhere different. The older part of the city is a water town, and the river was visible from our room. In fact, modern skyscrapers are visible in the distance, so this hotel could be billed as being in central old Suzhou. It was a large room, and while it could probably use an update of the decor, it was nonetheless clean and comfortable. The free wifi was pretty solidly robust, and the room has a safe. The bathroom had both a tub and a shower and has been modernized. So that actual accommodation is very nice, and we slept well. As a westerner, the breakfast left something to be desired for me. I can generally get by with some cereal or toast if necessary, but even these offerings didn't quite measure up, especially from a western chain. I just happened to meet the manager during our stay, and he agreed in this assessment. Perhaps by now there has been improvement, because this is actually a nice hotel. While better than simply "average", it was not quite four stars, though I have awarded this out of generosity. Certainly the price was very good, even compared to Shanghai. There is a shopping center within easy walking distance of the hotel, (with a Starbucks), and a historic water town area is also nearby. This is not a touristy water town; regular people are living here, and thus our stroll through that area was restrained, with discreet use of the cameras. One entertaining feature of the area adjacent to the hotel is that it seems to be something of a Red Light district. But there are also a large number of small restaurants too, so it is not exactly a scary district. I guess the Chinese authorities never let things get out of hand; in fact there was a small Police station nearby. We're from Nevada, so I must admit it was fun to see the various "nightclubs" from our hotel room window on the eighth floor. Another great feature of this hotel is the proximity of public transit. There are bus stops on each side of the street in front of the hotel which made it easy to get to attractions such as Tiger Mountain Park and The Humble Administrator's Garden. If you are leaving Suzhou by train, give yourself some extra time to get to the train station, since many of the taxi drivers seemed reluctant to take us the relatively short distance to the train station. Were they holding out for airport runs to Shanghai? All in all, it is a good comfortable hotel, with very reasonable rates, centrally located in the older part of Suzhou. They only have to improve the breakfast.
The location is good, it's close to rail way station, Shantang Street, and other attractions, it seems it had been open for many years, I can image at that time when it's open, it must be the best hotel in town, but now, the facilities looks old, I think it need renovation now.
In my opinion holiday is one of the best chains, at this particular hotel everything is great, service is excellent. However my experience did not meet my expectations. Since it got a little colder in Suzhou management shut down the air conditioner. When I asked for it to be turned back on they sent a free standing fan to my room...this is a common problem with hotels in China, it was suggested to me to open the window, with the pollution I could barely see the buildings downtown so I was not about to open the window. If you are in a hot room you want to drink something cold, the mini bar is disappointing with four sad cans of pop. Most of the staff doesn't speak English but they will always find someone who does at help you out. Will I stay here again, for the location yes, and definitely with adjusted expectations.
This hotel has smoking and non smoking room which is uncommon in a international chain. The rooms are large in size and is well appointed. The lights are bright, so it very comfortable to stay in. Because of there are smoking room, there is a smoke smell in the lift and even in my room which I specifically ask for "non-smoking" room. The hotel has a Starbucks cafe attrached to the lobby which is a great place to rest and relax. The hotel has a goof Chinese restaurant, the quality of food is good except the service is not up to standard. The breakfast selection is not the best , but acceptable. The service at the breakfast cafe was at most none. No one showed me to any seat, no one offered to pour coffee or tea. The location is so close to the San Tang Old street which is just 5-7 min walking distance from the hotel. Along the way, there is a MacDonald and other shopping area. I would like to warn residence of the hotel to latch the door. I personally experienced that a hotel staff opened my room door around 9:30am on a Saturday morning while I was still in bed. He back off when I open my eye. This worries me. So beware! you have been warn, As a whole I like the location but the service level could be improve. The service level is really not up to the standard of the Holiday Inn brand. I see Holiday Inn express in other location that has better service.
I'm not sure what the reviewer who says this hotel needs renovation means. I found it to be clean, comfortable, with fairly modern fixtures and fittings. It's in a fairly good location near the subway and within walking distance of the historic Shantang Street and canals. We found about 3 staff/managers who speak English, and they are extremely helpful. The service in this hotel is top notch. If anything, they really, really want to make you happy so we ended up leaving the do not disturb sign up a lot so that we didn't get buzzed for newspaper delivery, etc. The staff wants to know that you are satisfied. They put on a great breakfast buffet. Restaurants in the neighborhood are mainly local Chinese with some big chains in the malls nearby. Because the hotel is a tower, it's a landmark and usually easy to find your way back to. When catching a cab, make sure to bring the hotel's business card and tell the driver it's near Shi Lu station.
Good location in the city , service is average as many staff doesnt speak english. Bar is not opening in the evening !!!! Minibar item very limited only soft drinks and not even a beer inside I like the shower :)
It's convenient located near tourist area but it's quite old and it needs a renovation, good enough if you can book it at low prices. Nice staff but hard to understand English. Breakfast is just ok, it has a Starbucks at lobby floor.
We had a wonderful time in Suzhou and certainly in part because of the staff at this hotel. As westerners travelling in a foreign land they were very generous with their time. We needed a SIM card for a mobile and the concierge came down the street with us and spoke to the people in the shop - well and above exceeding necessary service! The hotel manager spoke to us personally and was helpful and lovely and all in all I would recommend this hotel very highly. (The room and amenities were great also.)
Holiday Inn Jasmine Suzhou I stayed there on 19.9.16. I booked a 6 day trip Shanghai thru TravelChinaGuide and I was totally surprised to find a 5 star hotel. I had a huge room with office corner, a sitting corner, a Treble Bed. Bar, shover and tube separated. The fastest WiFi Line I ever experienced! It is listed as a 4 Star, but nothing is different to a 5 Star! The view from my room at floor 20 was amazing. I never experienced a breakfast buffet like here! And specially there I felt the friendly atmosphere with helpful personal.
On short notice we have had several meetings in Suzhou. Starting early in the morning we did not want to travel from Shanghai, hence we decided to take a hotel directly here being a bit worried not to get a Western standard. Were happy to find a Holiday Inn, always have had good experiences with them in China. We arrived late in the evening around 9pm, so the hotel area was not too busy anymore. Entering the hotel is a bit strange, I am used to impressive lobbies, this hotel just have a small reception area. The staff was quite slow but we did get our rooms and some positive surprises. I was upgraded to a suite, that was a really nice room with a view and a comfortable bed. The badroom arrangement was a bit strange and good have been in better shape. Also we received a free drink voucher. Finding the bar was a challenge, turned out to be the counter close to a sitting area. We got a beer, but it was in a can. Surround of the hotel was already described by others, lots of things with a local touch. The biggest positive surprise was the breakfast. It is a huge area and there were plenty of food to choose from, even western dishes which I did not expect here. Check out was trouble free.
