Pros and Cons
Pros:
The host was very responsive and easy to work with. The place was clean and comfortable. The wooded setting was pretty and secluded. A fairly rough road to get to it, and quite steep in spots, but doable for most vehicles I think. We saw lots of wildlife, which can be exciting. Convenient to the park.
Cons:
Most of the wildlife we saw there was black bears, and they were there because of the food the hosts put out. Inside the cottage closet are two containers of "squirrel food," which seemed to be peanuts and corn and sunflower seeds. One container said that their critters were spoiled and liked to be fed at 630am and 330pm. Turns out, that's precisely when the bears would visit the very large feeder just outside the glass doors. The bears would were completely habituated to humans and showed no fear at all. Twice over a few days, a bear approached the yard while we were outside relaxing. We yelled and waved, but it didn't care at all and actually walked towards us. Once it stood just outside the glass door despite two dogs barking at it inches away. This behavior didn't feel completely safe for us, though the bears were not aggressive per se. More importantly, it's bad for the bears and puts them at risk of an incident. As they say, fed bears are dead bears. I know the hosts love the wildlife. I would just encourage them to consider the effects that the feeding station has on the safety of their guests, their pets, and the bears themselves.
