Pullman Sanya Yalong Bay Villas and Resort4.5 out of 5.0

The resort is located in Ah Long Bay, it has apartment rooms and villa style houses. Its 10 - 15 mins walk to the beach from the lobby and 5 mins drive to the Outlets shopping mall. I stayed at the villa with own private pool with double cottages, easily fit a family of 4. The area is quite large and you need to wait for the golfcart to pick you up from the hotel lobby. Overall the maintenance is kept ok. The wifi is slow and mosquitos can keep you awake at night. The place is great if you want peace and quiet time alone with family. If you want easy access to the beach, better pick the beach side ones.
A welcome message made of flower petals awaited when I entered my room. Breakfast next to ponds filled with carp. Pools for children and adults. Beautiful views of the South China Sea. Two restaurants on site — both very good. The one serving Cantonese cuisine is especially good. The roof top Executive Club is a private relaxing venue... very enjoyable. The attentive staff and proximity to the airport make this a very good choice for business or pleasure. Regrettably, most people here smoke and hotel rooms smell of cigarette smoke.
The hotel is not in the beach area and it takes more than 5 minutes to the beach on foot. Each villa has a private swimming pool and the hotel has a big pool. Since all of them are not heated pools, I saw no one swim because the water is very cold in January. I stayed 3 nights in the Pullman Oceanview Sanya Resort and Spa and 3 nights in Pullman Yalong Bay Sanya Villas and Resort. Though I was generally satisfied with facilities of the latter hotel, I highly recommend the Pullman Oceanview Sanya Resort and Spa. I cannot agree more with other guests of this hotel and my friends who had stayed there, the service of all hotel staff, including the reception, the pool (there are 5 pools on the hotel) and the both the Chinese Restaurant and the Sand (Cafe House) Restaurant are excellent. I visited Sanya twice or thrice a year and each and every time, I enjoyed thoroughly my stay with the Hotel. The Chinese food is gorgeous, yummy, yummy ! This hotel I definitely strongly recommend in particular to those visiting Sanya for holiday with fily and kids.
We stayed in this hotel for three nights. We stayed in the resort room with private swimming pool. We tried the BBQ buffet dinner. We tried the Chinese restaurant. We tried the bar for high tea. All in average rate. The helper for cleaning the room, swimming pool, gardening....all very good service. Make me feel in Thailand instead of China. No private beach for this hotel but just 10mins walk to public beach area. Good hotel in Sanya to stay if you want the feel of resort.
Thank you so much for your amazing hospitality. A special thank you to Ms Lynn, Ms Elina, Mr Mark Deng, Mr Billy, Chef Simon & Chef Cao (Noodle Bar) who went out of their way to make sure that we were extremely comfortable. They truly made our stay a memorable one. Before I made the reservation I was very skeptical about the hotel because of the reviews I had read; but after talking to Ms Lynn I was very sure of my choice. She assured me that the staff will make sure that all the arrangements are up to my expectations. From the moment we stepped into the hotel each and every member of the staff was very warm & helpful. The Thai villa was very spacious and lavish. It was the perfect pick for our special celebration. We loved the towel decorations the room service team made every day. Mr Mark, Mr Billy, Chef Simon & Chef Cao took utmost care of our dietary restrictions and prepared mouthwatering dishes for us. During our stay they prepared amazing custom dishes for our breakfast. Every dish that we asked for was made especially for us. They really went the extra mile.
SUMMARY: Once the spectacular resort secret in China is now physically showing it’s age, but more importantly, the F&B department destroys any ability for a non-Chinese speaker to stay here with any modicum of comfort or ease. I’m generously giving it 3 stars since I think domestic tourists will enjoy it. But for international tourists I would suggest sadly this is a 2 star property now DETAIL: I’ve been coming here for several years. My 1st TripAdvisor review from April 2013 calls this property “BEST PRIVATE resort experience in China”, but each visit since it has progressively gotten worse, largely due to F&B operations and obvious refocus on 100% domestic tourists rather than 80% domestic and 20% international . Sadly, this is my last time here in the beautiful private Myanmar private pool villas. While the housekeeping and pool maintenance staff, and duty manager “Tony” have all been very, very good, the F&B department has destroyed this resort, as indicated by the other reviews too. I do not speak Chinese, and as a result, I only stay in 4 or 5 star properties within China, since their stars are granted by the Chinese Government, in part, due to their ability to service international guests in English. The Pullman in Yalong Bay falls short here. No English spoken at room service or by calling the “guest service” number. Due to remote location in Yalong Bay, there are no other choices for food than hotel. No menu’s are even provided in room, except a WeChat bar code [see photo] to order in Chinese from within WeChat with a partial menu, with no breakfast options, and different pricing than their actual menus. On the first day, using translation from a front desk staffer, I got room service to deliver me a menu in English (which was photocopied onto the back of this weeks guest folio information with other guests names, rate codes etc.. etc..) - [see photo - where for privacy I have blurred out guests private info] From this photocopied menu, when I needed food or drinks (3-4 times a day), I would call room service, and their system would show my villa number. They would hang up (often after an obligatory giggle) and a room service staffer would come by about 20 minutes later where I would point to English, and he would then refer to the Chinese, and then place an order. 30-40 minutes later, food would arrive. No ability to deviate from menu of course, but at least it kind of worked…. Until I realized that prices on that menu were higher than current. (Example: Beef Burger with either a beer or soft drink is RMB 98 on tentcard offer in room, yet the WeChat menu and printed menu is RMB 108 without beverage (price difference of RMB 28) On my second day I called room service at 11am, ready to request for someone to come to villa so I could order a beef burger and coffee — but in very broken English was told “no kitchen open, no food no cafe”. I waited a few hours, and tried again, got a different room service attendant, who did not speak any English, and magically the room service order person arrived at the villa 20 minutes later to take my order. The food quality is very hit and miss — certainly not an epicurean delight. Both the Mushroom Cream Soup and Carbonara Pasta came differently each day - both in taste, ingredients and presentation — no standardization clearly. Expect basic food with a focus on seafood and Chinese style. Since I was staying for a week, I ended up hiring a live-in bilingual “food assistant” who for 2.5 days went out of the hotel to find me better food and brought back to hotel. Since I was already paying for 2 people in Villa, he got use of the pool and villa, and I got food and a lower cost. Worked well, until he had to leave to return to his family. Online I met one of the staff at the adjacent Ritz Carlton, where I had stayed before, who took pity on me, and coordinated for delivery of coffee from the Ritz Carlton to me at the villa. Apparently, the Pullman has a reputation with their F&B in the Yalong Bay Area. The difficulties I had with getting food, coffee and drinks during my stay apparently are not uncommon according to some other staff here. In my opinion the only solution would be for Accor to dismiss the Director of F&B at this hotel, and get an F&B management team into overhaul the entire process from service through cuisine. Apart from F&B, the villa’s are starting to show their age. Wooden outdoor elements in particular are rotting and broken [see photo]. On checkin, it took 2 attempts to find a villa for the week that had a functioning clean pool, filled with water, and furnishings. Two of the white towels on arrival had large “poo” stains on them — disgusting — obviously not washed from previous guests. I used the pool towels instead (what a difference an “L” makes). BUT, once settled into the villa, the good memories of previous visits come back — total privacy thanks to high solid fence surround your own compound with magnificent layout (of the Myanmar villas) with separate outdoor air conditioned living room (with TV) that faces the pool, 1.3m deep fresh water pool that is warm year round (however no steps, only ladders), an outdoor pagoda (used to have massage mats and was a great place to lay in the sun and read) and your main air conditioned living area, including bedroom with quality bedding, small desk (with both WiFi and Ethernet), closet with safe, mini-bar (not replenished during my stay unless I specifically requested), 2 person jacuzzi tub, bathroom with separate toilet, indoor shower and outdoor shower. As an aside, in my booking I had requested hotel transportation airport pickup service, and provided the flight details. No show from hotel at airport, so I took a taxi. (At least I saved money on their mistake) As another aside, I had pre-confirmed a delayed checkout until 4pm, however decided I did not need that time and would prefer to get to airport earlier to have breakfast lunch and coffee, so I told hotel I would checkout at 1:00pm and double confirmed with duty manager the night before. At 12:10pm on day of checkout I got a phone call to say I had to leave now. I explained the above, she agreed 12:30pm to have golf cart at villa to bring me to lobby. I quickly pack and stand in sun outside my villa at 12:30pm as requested, to have their cart arrive at 12:52pm (after I made 2 calls enquiries on status). At checkout I requested the fapiao (official receipt) and was told in broken English I need to scan some QR code to start that process when the hotel already has all my business fapiao information in the booking. After I mentioned to supervisor that the Chinese tax authorities may be interested in the Pullman’s lack of interest in supplying a fapiao, did the supervisor flip and do everything possible she could to ensure they would issue one (apparently to be mailed to my office in Shanghai). THE GOOD: The villa layout, privacy and private pools (and of course leaving the property forever). THE BAD: F&B (all aspects), wear and tear on villas, lack of English. BEST ROOMS: Myanmar Villa’s offer great value for money. Ensure the villa / pool is fully functional (including AC) on arrival however, and move until you get one that meets your needs. THE SECRET: If you use WeChat (a must in China), find an English speaking duty manager at checkin, and add him/her — then when problems arise, and they will, you have a lifeline. I did this with “Tony”, who kindly helped me order dinner (on his day off) remotely, with night time room service that would not take my order. I sent Tony photos of the photocopied menu and what I wanted, he placed the order for me. Thank you Tony!!!!! A TIP: On arrival at airport, there is a small convenience shop to the right as you exit baggage claim — buy as much drinks and snacks as you can carry to stock your mini-bar and villa since just getting drinks delivered to your room will be a massive challenge for non-chinese speakers.
Been travelling for a year with my lovely wife, and I must say, this place was a gem. Just the buffets were amazing to see, mounds and mounds of differing dishes to satisfy almost every palate. I really enjoyed this hotel and will be trying more Pullman Hotels in the future.
I have expeted a 5 Star accomodation of Accor group but unfortunately service and houskeeping was by fare no "western style". One of 2 rooms not ready at arrival, no welcome drink offered (had to ask for), breakfast ("Chinese Style"), next table cleaning with desinfection (spray) same time try to "enjoy" the food, smudgy, dirt windows in restaurant, broken vents in bar (answer, only for decoration - actually broken), bath broken flush, sower head clogged (calcified), floor in bath dirty (hair ...), instead of discount on drinks for platin member - full price,... instead of "burning" points, wasting points.
I visited Sanya again for a second year in a row and wanted to stay at the Pullman Yalong Bay again, because last year with private pool villa was very good. So the rooms, much the same condition clean and orderly. Nice fruit tray welcoming guests on the first day.. wouldn't be bad to have a second tray delivered mid week when a guest is staying for 7 days! 2 bottles of water each day -- -- also not enough. Even with purchasing the entire minibar.. which at 98rmb wasn't a bad deal. (great wechat method of purchasing the minibar and getting it all at a lower price. i wish more hotels did this) The bathtub was not operable... turned on the water and waited for it to rise.. it never did. I pulled open the mechanical door and found water flooding the floor below the tub, the drain was not connected to the spa water jet machine... and water was just running under the floor... no one told us not to use the tub.. i would have asked for a different room. I loved the spa tub last year. The airconditioning was working a little better this year. I didn't need to call for a fan this year to sleep, the room stayed cool enough. Not as cool as I would have liked it but much more acceptable than last year. The food at the main buffet resturaunt has changed. Last year many different choices each night the theme changed... this year. the food stayed the same every night. Forcing us to go out to other locations or crossing the street to other hotels (which had much better buffets). All together it was a good trip, very relaxing and a fun time swimming privately (though many bushes have been cut down that limit that privacy because the fences don't cover the full view.) I will be prepared to book again in June 2018 for my next visit!
Have been to a few villa stays in Vietnam and Thailand and felt Sanya's Pullman not as good. Maintenance and upgrading could be done. Hotel staff was helpful and breakfast spread was good. Accessibility to the beach not within hotel, not as convenient compared to the stretch at Marriott, Hilton and Ritz. Hotel does not provide shuttle to beach across the street.
