Good location in the Gas lamp quarter. Room did get stuffy overnight - which is probably my only complaint. Staff was great when my key decided to stop working at 4 am and locked me out of my room. Check in staff were great all round and bathrooms clean!

In March I stayed at the USA Hostels location in downtown San Diego and it was incredible. Rooms and Showers: the rooms were cozy and clean, the bathrooms were modern, clean, and had privacy (individual locking stalls for the toilets and showers). Other Facilities: the kitchen was large and they had a nice seating area to eat. I really loved the common room where one could socialize, work, or just hang. And in terms of a hostel breakfasts, this one gets a great rating. They didn't just provide toast and jam, but also some fruit, yogurt, bagels, and oatmeal. Atmosphere: the atmosphere was fun and social and I met so many great people. I loved how they organized casual evening activities (family dinner, beer pong, etc.) Also, I definitely took advantage of the free shuttle service to La Jolla! That was a "no brainer". Staff: the staff were helpful, nice, and knowledgeable. Shout out to Henny (sp?), Pedro, and the girl (forgot her name) who gave me the recommendation for the restaurant, "La Puerta". That was a great restaurant with awesome happy hour deals! I would definitely stay here again :)

USA hostel was enjoyable. The staff is helpful and friendly. There are also events posted each day that are available to sign up for. Breakfast is provided as well. I recommend this hostel for individuals or couples.

Stayed for 3 nights in a double ... the directions given by hostel are good but I still walked past it (and continued to do so throughout stay!).it's a purple/aubergine clearly labelled door sandwiched between two eating places with outside tables. On entering, you are faced by two flights of broad steep stairs up to reception ... could be difficult for people with mobility issues, impossible for wheel chair users ... need to check if alternative access is available ... friendly, helpful check-in. .. decor of hostel suggests you've stepped into a time warp taking you back to 1960/70s Hippy era San Fransisco ... as I said, it grows on you! The room was a good size ... limited hanging space ... cooking smells tended to seep in from outside eateries for short periods as did some kitchen noise but both lessened later evening.Being a city centre hostel, most younger people tended to go out later but I didn't hear any noisy returns. Breakfast is included and was fine ... small dining room above kitchen ... reasonable sized lounge and new laundry room was being installed. A happy, clean, friendly hostel with unisex bathrooms and scattered seating areas throughout. Good location on edge of busy Gaslight area with wide range of eating places, bars, etc. Turn left out of hostel... two or three blocks up on corner, opposite side ... cheap Chinese ... rice or noodles plus 2 items plus drink ... good size portions ... less than $9 ... mix of clientele. Enjoy your stay

Hostel activities every day, transfers to the sightseeings and to the second hostel Ocean Beach on behalf of the hostel, shampoos & soaps for free, nice healthy breakfast and cosy common spaces. Maximum 4 people in the dorm. Super

I would not normally stay in a hostel, but this place changed my mind. It is very clean and has everything you could need. It is well set-up with secure storage, places to keep food and helpful staff. The location works very well for a stay in San Diego. A bargain!

Right in the middle of nightlife and really near all the things to see and do in SD. Very colourful interior which is really cute. Friendly staff, rooms clean and as to be expected for hostel (bunkbeds and lockers that you can lock if you bring a padlock.. outlet at each bed and inside each locker for charging electronics), breakfast standard and ok i had a REAL nice stay at this hostel

We had just completed a cruise thru the Panama Canal & wanted to spend just one night in the Gaslamp district B4 our flight home & the USA Hostel in San Diego was ideal. Now keep in mind that we R not your typical aged hostel guests at ages 70 & 71, but it was fun hanging out with the young crowd. Had a private room with twin beds & bathroom down the hall. Interior was eclectic, shared bathroom & showers were great...clean & private. Did not use kitchen, but it was well equipped. Common areas were comfortable. Staff were very helpful. Right next door to the Asti Restaurante...one of San Dirgo’s most highly rated Italian restaurants. Only down side was the steep steps with luggage to get to the 2nd floor Hostel, but some kind young people gave us an assist.

I stayed at this hostel for a couple nights and had a fantastic time. It is very centrally located in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, surrounded by many restaurants and bars. Dorm room was clean and the beds were comfortable and had these semi-private enclosures complete with reading light, shelf and power outlet. Even the lockers have outlets inside them so you can securely charge your electronics while you're out. Decor is really nice and colourful, with a lounge and various couches scattered around. Bathrooms are unisex and very clean. I met lots of cool fellow solo travellers here and we had a great time. The staff is friendly and helpful and organize all sorts of social activities for the guests. A simple but free breakfast is included too, but I didn't partake in that because of my schedule. The hostel is very easy to get to from the airport by bus #992 and numerous bus and trolley routes in the area can get you anywhere in the city, or just walk! Since this hostel is in a very busy area, I would recommend asking for a room not facing the street if you need quiet when sleeping. I didn't hear a peep from my room (#13). The staff do offer ear plugs if you need them though. All in all, this was an amazing hostel! Highly recommended.
