The location was great, walking distance to all of wonderful Gaslamp. It is great for a short stay. Not as clean as expected: although linens were crisp and clean it was dirty behind old floor heaters, carpets could use some cleaning, large dead bugs in hallway light fixtures. Sort of American Horror Story status. Super neat but creepy only elevator is small and difficult to get in and out of, especially with luggage. Most of staff were nice and friendly, one sort of looked scared if you talked to him. Valet service was convenient since you just pull up right in front and unload your stuff and they deal with your car. No jacuzzi or pool.

Not bad for 100 years old. The st. james hotel has a great view from the roof.

We stayed at this hotel because of it's proximity to the Gaslamp and Petco Park. It also happened to be St. Patricks Day. It's an expensive night's stay, but it was expected being it was SD. Expect to step back in time when you walk into the lobby. We love the historic look of the hotel. The rooms are small but comfortable and clean. The shower is tiny; I'm a big guy so that was an interesting experience. The biggest plus was the helpful staff and the great 24hr restaurant attached to the hotel. Great food and reasonably priced. Expect it to be noisy in the morning. They tell you this up front. 7AM comes around and you're going to hear delivery trucks and all the usual signs of life. Overall a great experience, and we'd stay there again.

Outdated and simple. Could use updating. Might have picked somewhere else but not a lot available.......... Odd room setup. The room was quiet . Bathroom needed updating too

The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The front desk staff and the airport shuttle driver were all pleasant, helpful, and efficient. The hotel is old and shows its age. Furnishings are very old-fashioned.

The worst experience I have every had staying in a hotel.

Elevator extremely slow, one broken. Rooms are tiny. Could hear all noise from outside all night. Window air to cool room. Radiator made loud noises all night. Terrible time sleeping.

I reserved our travel through Orbitz with the reserve now, pay later option. Orbitz confirmed that I would not be charged any amount by them and the hotel would collect the amount in full after check in. This hotel charged me $100 the day before check in- prior to the cancellation window. That was weird as I have never experienced that before. The staff are friendly and welcoming upon arrival (except for 1 lady who checked us out- she was abrupt and rude). The location is perfect for partying in the Gaslamp district. The rooms-- SO small. The door hits the bed when you open it. The shower is very small also but has good water pressure and the water gets hot consistently. No tub. They don't have wash cloths, only hand towels and bath towels. The ac worked fine. We had it at the coolest level-on the lowest sertung the whole time and it rained our entire stay. I'm not sure how it would have worked in the summer. There was street noise and party noise heard from the 8th floor but it was no biggie. The walls are very thin so you hear other people talking sometimes. Our room was clean. The elevator was not as awful as some other reviews said but it is hard to navigate if you have luggage. Overall, I would only stay here again if I was in a pinch and they had an excellent rate. I can't imagine paying any more than what I did for this place.

for some reason I cannot place scores in the boxes above, but I wanted to say for the last minute reservations this hotel served it's purpose for that, but being old, it did show that part of it, having to pull gates back to get on the elevator was charming, but still very old. also the shower in our room was very small, being tall I needed turn around room. Again because I needed to stay close to family who live there, this was the close price wise I could pay at the time of Holiday time, Rooms are very small, no closets, and one day we were without towels, but for the most part it was ok, I enjoyed the rooftop, but can't upload my pictures, that was a nice touch, so in all it was ok, but I could not refer my friends who are pampered princess, who would ask me why? they are into luxury. Me I just need clean somewhat pretty, and a nice bed, good showering spot. thanks

For me, this was a great hotel. Historic building and some charm that comes with that. Surprisingly affordable right in the Gaslamp Quarter, so great location! Though nothing fancy, it was light, clean and comfortable. Nice rooftop deck overlooking much of San Diego. The street noise was not bothersome to me, at least not in my room on the 7th floor. Good 24 hour diner linked to the lobby. My only complaint is that the hot water was not terribly consistent--it would be the perfect temperature and then cool off a bit, back and forth (but never any cold blasts). But all in all, worked great for me!

Hotel is located in perfect area downtown. Everything is walking distance. Hotel was nice. Room was a bit dated but it was clean. Had a great time. Will come to stay again!

This hotel located in the heart of San Diego downtown. It's a very convenient location for anyone looking for night entertainment and good restaurants. It might be a little bit challenging if you're driving - the parking rates are high.

Walls and a bit thin, lot of people parting late into the morning.

Very old hotel with character in lively gas lamp district. Rooms small and cozy. Some street noise. Rustic elevator and gorgeous views from rooftop. Best location. Walked to Pet Co Park. Great diner next door. Will stay here again.

I picked this hotel for the convenient location and low rates. For being in the Gaslamp district, it met my expectations. Pros: - location and price - nice rooftop - friendly staff - clean room - complementary airport shuttle - free WiFi Cons: - noisy at night - old elevator with the gate that you have to manually open - slow airport shuttle (coming in from the airport was a 20 minute wait and shuttle only leaves hotel on the hour)

Absolutely loved the location of this hotel. In the heart of the gaslamp district which made going out really easy. Valet was also available here which was great. They also had some great tips on where to go and what to see. Front desk staff was also very helpful and friendly. Terrible experience with a super rude, hostile "security guard" the last night of my stay. Felt the hotel handled my complaint very well. Overall it was a creepy place with a creepy elevator and an overall feeling that you're in the show American horror story hotel but I would still recommend it because of the price, location, and most of the staff being helpful and friendly.

The hotel was in a great downtown location. If you aren't looking for some super fancy but clean and safe, this is the place to be. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and efficient. We loved being able to walk to all the bars and restaurants in the area the most! Their was a diner right next door which was great for a late night out! The only thing is that our room was small which was fine because we were only there for a few nights but not ideal for a long stay.

Showed up and the staff behind the counter was watching a basketball game on his phone but was nice and polite. Had me sign the paperwork and handed me 2 keys. Elevator was one out of a horror movie, pull open door and then sliding gate that was awkward to hold open both at the same time. Felt like I was in a cage being transported to a dungeon. The room was on the ninth floor and barely big enough to fit the queen sized bed. There was a coat hanger bar for clothes, a tiny nightstand with phone and alarm clock pushing each other off the side. A tiny desk with the coffee maker and reading light battling for real estate. The toilet had a strip of paper marked sanitary probably because the seat looked like it had leprosy. Had a set of earplugs for the guest on the bed, enough said on that. There is no wifi. It shows up but you'll never get a thing downloaded, not even a home page. Closest thing to living in the house from the movie Fight Club I've ever been. Cost me $30 to get 3 tshirts and 3 underwear washed. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

My stay was very enjoyable. At first, I was anxious because the hotel was older than I expected, having been constructed in 1912 and it still had the elevators that were installed at that time. Loving history, I came to enjoy the adventure of riding the old style elevators and to experience the ageless quality of the hotel. The staff was extremely helpful and, being located in the Gaslamp district, the hotel provided the opportunity to explore this part of San Diego.

Clean safe cheap and fairly close to Gaslight area and convention center. An easy walk. One of the few that does not overly take advantage of their local.
