This is a very good hotel indeed, as reviewers have consistently reported, and we enjoyed our week's stay in generally fine weather - with no trouble from wasps! We had chosen a "side lake view" balcony room that actually faced directly on to the front, albeit not a fully open view, overlooking the hotel's lakeside facilites and across to the far banks of the Wolfgangsee. The room was a good size and very comfortable, with adequate storage space and en ensuite bath, although the lighting could have been better despite six light sources. The restaurant provided ample breakfasts with fresh food and good coffee, while the evening meals on half board were so comprehensive that it was sometimes necessary to forego the delicious salad or decline one of the other four courses. However, even local wine by the bottle was unexpectedly expensive and we soon reverted to house wine by the carafe. The staff were without exception polite, pleasant and helpful, and whilst we usually spoke German, they all had a fair to excellent command of English. The hotel was clearly popular with Austrian and German guests as well as British, and there was a good atmosphere as a result. The location is fine, though the walk to and from the town centre was long enough in wet conditions. The local bus stop is almost outside and the pier for lake steamers is adjacent; take a boat day ticket and hop on and off for morning coffee, lunch and afternoon coffee and cake in a different town each time, with a refreshing cup of tea back at the hotel. What's not to like?

This hotel is set in a prime location for all the lake has to offer. It is just a minute or two from the world famous Schafberg cog railway and it is a similar distance to board many of the ferry boats that can transport you to many villages around the lake. Our room (no 111) had a balcony with nice view of the lake & mountains (see my attached photos). The bathrooms were modern and spacious. The room was spotlessly clean! All the staff were very friendly & helpful. Breakfast was varied and catered for all tastes from continental to sausage, egg and bacon and a wide choice of fresh fruit. The town is lovely - typically Austrian with bakeries, cafes and shops. Very pretty little town but very quiet in the evening! I would recommend this hotel. Regards Svein-Magne Tunli from Bergen, Norway.

Stayed for one week at the Strandhotel Margaretha , in a superior room with lake view. The scenery from the balcony was breathtaking. The hotel is old world, spotless and all the staff are extremely hardworking and pleasant. The room was a good size, with plenty of storage space. the bathroom was also large and included a bath with shower attachment. The toilet was separate. A small safe is provided free of charge. There is a jug kettle,2mugs,2 teabags and 2 sachets of powered milk provided.Should you need a spoon,sugar/sweetener or coffee, better bring your own, or purchase at the only supermarket on the main street . The outside dining area has beautiful views across the lake. Afternoon tea /cake is available there from 3pm each day. There was a big problem with wasps everywhere in the resort while we were there, this spoiled having breakfast outdoors, as soon as food was served ,the wasps arrived. Luckily they were not around at dinner time. Having read so many good reports regarding the food served at the hotel,I must admit that I was a little disappointed. The breakfast selection of cold meats cheese etc was good, as was the hot food, including bacon, sausage, and scrambled egg.It is possible to order boiled eggs also. The scrambled eggs tasted ok, but the greyish colour was a little offputting. The 3 choices available for the main course was where the disappointment lay, having never stayed in Austria before,I am not qualified to know the standard of food in 4 star hotels there. Maybe the menu is geared at the German guests. The hotel is in a great location for all the activities in the resort .St Wolfgang is really nice, with lots to see and do and it is only about 10 minutes walk from hotel. There are plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes in the town. Also a few concerts in the evening , some are free of charge. Really enjoyed the week and very glad I choose St Wolfgang.

I have just come back from a weeks holiday at the margaretha hotel with my mum. We had a wonderful time, the hotel is beautiful, superb food and friendly attentive staff. Breakfast on the terrace and lying in the sun on the lake side, a dream holiday and a perfect location, what more can I say!!

The hotel suites rightly opposite beautiful St wolfgang lake. The house looks a long history with well equipped as well as interior. The family room we stayed this time was spacious with a seperate child room connected. The lake view can be seen from balcon.Breakfast was served perfectly in the first floor restaurant. It only takes 2mins walk to the Schaffburg cograil station.Anyway,we really enjoyed the stay at Strandhotel Magret St Wolfgang.

Recently returned from a super week spent at the Strand Margaretha our second visit. Everything is excellent here a great position opposite the lake and beautiful views of St Wolfgang and the mountains. The service is good by very pleasant and hardworking staff and a great choice of food. Superior rooms at the front have the best views of the lake and definitely worth the premium. The whole hotel is well kept and very clean.

Longer report, in order of importance to us Cleanliness This really, really matters to us so it comes first in our report. On this the Hotel Margaretha was faultless. The lady who cleaned (and tidied) our room did so with a passion. Marvellous! The room We travelled with Thomson Lakes and Mountains (we use packages because that is the only way we can get flights from an a airport near home). Sometimes this means that you do not get one of the best rooms. However, Thomson were able to offer (for a supplement equal to 15% of the total cost) a "Superior" room with lake view. For that we got a room with plenty of space to walk around and two armchairs. We also got a double depth balcony wide enough for two sun loungers, which were provided (the covers on the loungers were changed at the start of our stay). If your budget allows, try to get one of these rooms. Food The food was always well cooked, nicely presented and with ample portions. What more can you ask for? The location of the hotel The Margaretha is on the lakeside. Well, nearly. There is a road between the hotel and the edge of the lake. Do not be put off by that. Traffic is light and at no time was our sleep (with balcony door and windows open) disturbed (mostly what we heard was birdsong). The lake does not have a sloping beach here - the hotel has its own grassy bank at the edge of the lake and then a decking out over the water for the sun loungers. Rowing boats and stand-on paddle boards are provided (by the hotel) for the brave. Be aware though that the lake is deep and is fed by mountain streams, so even in June it was really quite cold. The town St Wolfgang is a small town, but well provided with shops. It becomes rather crowded during the day when coaches arrive with day visitors. There is virtually no through traffic in St Wolfgang because there are no roads out of town going northwards. The roads in the centre of the town are narrow but carry little traffic because the town centre is by-passed by a road through a tunnel. We managed to attend four concerts (two of them free) during a seven night stay. Tips 1) The easiest way get around the area is by ship on the lake. Be aware though that mid-week out of high season the interval between ships is 90 minutes. If all you want is to cross the lake to the other side there is a ferry just 100 paces from the hotel. The boat comes across when you press a call bell. No long waits for the bigger ships. 2) If you go across to the other side you can seek out a small distillery that sells the nicest Schnappes. The hotel will advise you of where it is (about 20 minutes stroll from the ferry) 3) Also on the other side of the lake is the summer Rodelbahn. No snow so you cannot toboggan in the usual way. The Rodel bahn is like going down the luge on a metal toboggan. But it has a proper brake, so even the timid can have a gentle go the first time round. It is great fun, and few resorts have a Rodelbahn. The signs say that it is 90 minutes walk from the ferry but at a gentle pace we did the walk in 50 minutes. 4) The lakeside paths are nearly level (especially on the other side of the lake) so cycling is very popular. You can take a bike on the ferry. The hotel has bikes that you can use. 5) If you want to go further afield there is a bus stop about 200 paces away. The timetable can be a bit difficult to follow - some services run only on school days or work days - but basically it is "one an hour".

If you're looking for a perfect location, then this is the hotel! Huge room (310) with it's own sun terrace and magnificent lake view. The hotel is spotless, extremely pleasant staff, and the food is excellent, with a huge buffet selection for breakfast, and the salad buffet, then starter, then soup (all that's before the main dinner course!) followed by a delicious dessert! All beautifully presented (Thank you chef!). So pleasant to eat either in the dining room, or on the huge terrace. The complimentary afternoon tea and cakes is an added treat. Situated near to the Cog Railway, and a boat landing, the hotel is in an ideal position for enjoying all the facilities St Wolfang and lake can offer. Worth getting a day's ticket for the "hop on/off" lake boats. The Cog Railway is a treat! For walkers, the paths are well marked, and inter-locking for a huge range to suit all capabilities. We would highly recommend staying at this hotel!

There is nothing negative I can say about this hotel.. clean & fresh room, staff very accommodating although they don't get the Brit sense of humour.. Food was very tasty, presented beautifully,a credit to the chef. Be warned they do like their pork & cheeses... Minutes away from St Wolfgang, the ferry point & mountain train. Free use of the boats, bike, hiking stick, brollies etc it would be very hard to beat this hotel... We did upgraded to a lake view with balcony it was lovely to wake up to that amazing view each morning... we did the discovery pack with Thompson so got to see some amazing sites. This was our first time in Austria & will definitely not be the last.

My wife and I stayed here 3 nights, September 16, 17 and 18, 2016. We really enjoyed this hotel and felt instantly comfortable here. We had a room on the top floor, right under the pinnacle of the roof with a balcony that over looks the lake (room 305). The room was slightly larger than the average European hotel room and had a very decent sized bathroom. The hotel staff was friendly and relaxed. Breakfast was large and varied in their very nice dining room looking out on the lake. They have a tea and coffee time (with cakes) each day at 3pm. There is a dock on the lake with swim ladders, s'up boards, sun umbrellas and recliners for lounging. You get a robe and beach towels if you need them. They have bicycles for the use of the guests. It was clean, inviting, traditional Austrian in appearance on the exterior, has a restaurant and bar, and a wonderful big, covered porch and outdoor seating area. It's also a very short, easy walk (5-10 minutes) into the heart of the village, depending on your destination in the village. We would go back there in a heartbeat.
