Ruru Tiny House by Tiny Away

Summary:

Endless adventures await you at Ruru Tiny House! Enjoy one of our unique holiday homes near Takaka and Golden Bay, set on 15 acres of land, half of which is native bush and the other half is grazing stock land—planting fruits and vegetables as our first step toward self-sufficiency.

The Space:

Ruru Tiny House by Tiny Away is located near Takaka and Golden Bay, surrounded by lovely natives, pungas, Manuka, and ferns. It is a 139-square-foot home that offers a peaceful environment for guests—built around a pan of quartz known for its relaxing and healing energy. Te Waikoropupū Springs, Labyrinth Rocks Park, Wharariki Beach, and Abel Tasman Track are just a few of the nearby attractions in the areas.

Explore our cozy tiny homes overlooking paddocks with calves, sheep, and lambs. Meet our gentle husky, large but friendly. Small dogs may feel intimidated, but he's all about playful fun. He joins us around the property, eager to assist with chores. Enjoy a unique blend of nature and friendly animals in our magical retreat!

The ideal Golden Bay accommodation with easy access to water, a kitchenette, cooking equipment, and excellent bathroom facilities. The bathroom, however, follows ecologically sustainable principles, including an eco-friendly cassette toilet with a removable waste-holding tank, hand basin, and shower (gas heated for hot showers) for you to use.

Only an hour drive to nearby towns like Richmond and Nelson's attractions such as Kahurangi National Park, Nelson Lakes National Park, and more. So, make an endless list of things to do.

Our local recommendations:

- Te Waikoropupū Springs contain some of the clearest water ever measured, coming second only to Lake Rotomairewhenua (Blue Lake) in the Nelson Lakes National Park.

- Labyrinth Rocks Park is a real-life interpretation of Jurassic Park crossed with a fairytale. Maze-like pathways weave through limestone outcrops and lush native bush, fascinating explorers of all ages.

- Wharariki Beach has one of the most spectacular coastline and photographed beaches in the Nelson Tasman region.

- Farewell Spit Campground is a bird sanctuary and wetland of international importance, with stricter protection than a national park.

- Patons Rock, Ligar Bay, Tata Beach, and the Abel Tasman Track are just a few of the recommended attractions in New Zealand.

Getting Around:

By car:

- 1hr 40 mins, 79 km drive to Nelson city

- 6 mins, 5.6km drive to the nearest town Takaka

- 2 km from local Golden Bay airport since a lot of people from Wellington will fly into Golden Bay for the weekend. Our property is reachable by 2WD/4WD drive.

By public transport: We recommend guests to travel by private vehicle or v-hire to travel to our property and tour local attractions.

Other Things to Note:

- Semi-Off grid tiny house

- Good mobile reception for all networks

- No smoking allowed on the property

- No unregistered guests or visitors are allowed

- We have a friendly and well-socialised Husky who loves pats

Disappointed

Looks great online but the reality was quite a disappointment. The cabin was not as well appointed as I had thought given the cost, all a bit cheap and plasticky. The floor was sort of buckled and uneven in places and as such the door was a challenge to close. The container got quite hot as the weather was so good, but there was no air conditioning and no fly screens, so opening the windows meant I had to contend with some big bugs late at night (moths and cicadas). I found rubbish from previous occupant in the sink, and the shower was not totally clean, bit grubby in corners. The outlook from the cabin I was in would have been much better without the crumbling "fibreglass" animal shelter right out front. That said the livestock were very cute, with sheep and minature cattle in the paddock right outside. On the Sunday morning the little steers were very vocal about needing breakfast. Having said all this, the biggest issue I encountered was an inability to contact hosts, tried calling and left a number of messages but didn't get a response. As a single woman arriving late at night I didn't want to go knocking on doors, so had to cope without gas for cooking or a shower, as it had run out. Agent tried their best to support but seems they couldn't get any response either. Hopefully this is just a blip, and flagging it will see a better outcome for the next customer.
