We had a lovely one night stay in a queen room. The room was not large, but very well equipped and comfortable - it had everything we needed. We liked the vibe here, the kettle, tea and cold brew coffee available in the lounge, the friendly staff, the dining recommendations, it all added up to make a great stay. The location is perfect, just a few minutes walk to the town centre. Highly recommended.
We decided on the Ale House Inn for two reasons: the first being that we have stayed at a Lark hotel in Newport, RI and were blown away, so expectations were high. The second reason was because of the reviews praising its location. On the latter, we were not disappointed. It is probably the best location of any hotel in Portsmouth. Near eateries, a fine repertory theater literally in the same building, and walkable to the desired areas around town- all great. It was the actual accommodations that disappointed. Everything was “tight”. Small elevator, small room, small gathering lobby, really tiny bathroom, and the view from our room was a rooftop with mechanical units on top. Ugh! I felt the decor did not have the style we somehow thought would be carried through the Lark experience of the other place where we stayed. This particular venue is a small one in terms of number of rooms, but we didn’t think that small would translate into the size of the rooms. We were not able to get a king bed due to both of them being already booked. The staff were welcoming, helpful- absolutely no complaints there. One note though is that after 7:00PM there was no one on duty if problems arose. You would have to call a sister property. We booked directly with the hotel, so it was pricey on a nice fall weekend. I would never pay that much again were we to return, knowing what we now know. We did appreciate getting a parking pass for a church lot across the street. Because we walked everywhere, moving a car was never an issue. I would say that this in NOT a handicapped accessible place. Many steps to gain entrance from the street. The rooms would be impossibly small for handicapped. If you want expensive convenience to the town of Portsmouth, with clean but tight accommodations, it’s a great spot.
I was only able to stay one night due to my schedule. However, The staff helped me feel welcome after hours by giving me the easy to follow instructions for entering my room. They provided an iPad with various restaurants and things to do. I was able to walk within 1 block a great restaurant and order online a tour of the city on the following day!!! I will definitely return.
We were.looking for a small boutique hotel for 4 couples spending the weekend in Portsmouth. We found rooms at the Ale House and chose it for the location...right in the middle of a vibrant Portsmouth! When we arrived the “hotel” was on the second floor of a turn of the century warehouse with a playhouse on the ground floor. Greeted by a wide 12 concrete step entrance we were surprised. But the 10 room hotel when we took the elevator was just perfect. The rooms were all queen size beds and a little small but perfectly clean and livable! The “front desk” was just that...a desk with the most amazingly friendly and competent Joshua. The lobby, while small, was furnished with comfortable couches and chairs, snacks and a never before seen coffe tap system available 24 hours a day! Housekeeping was prompt and done with a friendly 2 person staff. They even had bikes to use for traversing the city. Although looking at them was a close as we got to using them! Some of our greatest experiences started as a surprise! We’d highly recommend this place for a weekend in Portsmouth with friends. I think we will be back!
If you can't deal with anything other than a typical hotel, this is not for you. If you are looking for great service, wondrrful accomodation, and a fun change from the ordinary, book a room here! My husband and I just celebrated our 20th anniversary in Portsmouth and got the best rate for an in-town location at the wonderful 10-room Ale House Inn, which is part of the Lark group of hotels. We were going to arrive at 8:00 and reception closes at 7:00, so while we were on our way, Josiah called us with easy instructions as to how to get into our room, and where to park. The Inn is on the 2nd floor of a building with a small local theater underneath and a few people who live there above. You walk in and face a comfy living room type atmosphere with seating, snacks and coffee on tap. Literally. On tap. The room was spotless and very user-friendly. And they had left a little anniversay gift for us in the room. The quiet Bow Street location is amazing. Easy access on foot to everything Portsmouth has to offer. They have an arrangement with the church across the street for parking spaces, and that worked out great for us. They have bicycles you can use for free. Craig, our host at reception, could not have been nicer or more helpful. We asked tons of questions and you could tell that he genuinely enjoyed telling us how to maximize our time in the area. With great advice on what to do and where to eat and drink. Portsmouth is beautiful in its own right, but our stay was greatly enhanced because we chose to stay at the Ale House Inn.
Driving from Boston to Portland we thought Portsmouth would make a great overnight stop and were right! The Inn was perfect location to all the sites and bites. The bikes came in handy for a trip over to Kittery for delicious noodles at Anju. Also, cruellers from Lils. In town there are a few breweries and lots of great spots for a bite. Check in was easy and they had a lot of great recommendations. The room was clean and comfortable. And we snagged a coffee each time we walked past the front. Stay here for a great portsmouth experience!
It was our first time in Portsmouth and we loved the city. The Ale House is close to the water, perfectly located to walk everywhere. Quite spacious and comfy rooms with everything you need. Clean bathroom. We were welcomed by Josiah who told us everything we should see and cool spots where we could eat and get deals on oysters. Also, we had some trouble with parking when we left and the private company who owns the lot in front of the hostel gave us a ticket. However, we reached out to Craig (who's the general manager of the Ale House) and he fixed everything directly with the company so we didn't have to pay the fine. Much appreciated, thanks again!
Hotel was in a great location to walk around town. There is parking across the street. They give you a parking pass to put in your car. Room was spacious and clean and staff was very helpful and nice. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Had a mini fridge and freezer. Complimentary Coffee, Tee and water along with a few snacks.
We booked a second stay at the Ale House Inn so we could attend a play at the Seacoast Rep theatre in the building and stay in town for dinner. It lived up to everything we remembered from our first visit - and more! The added hot and cold coffee bar in the lounge was superb. The staff was friendly and very welcoming, as always, and we were delighted to find a small box of cookies in our room with a note saying "hope you enjoy the play." Excellent touch! As others have mentioned, we think it offers just the right mix of a comfortable room without frills but with all the amenities that make a stay enjoyable. And you can't beat the location. We can't recommend this place enough.
