It is a very charming place to relax in and get away from the business of life. It is situated on beautiful grounds in a quiet and private setting. There is a lovely restaurant and bar that serves delicious food and they provide a complimentary breakfast cooked for a king. Joseph Ambler Inn is a lovely place where you can spend quality time alone or with others.
This is our fourth or fifth stay here. I'm honestly not sure if I've changed or the Inn has. It's a hard review to write as there are some parts that are great, and others not so much. First the great. The grounds are lovely and peaceful even though it is in the middle of suburbia which means easy access to restaurants, shopping train, etc. The woman who checked us in was kind of sullen which was funny given that they have one of those cute little signs that say that if you are rude or irritating they will charge you $10. Our first room was spacious but had a really pronounced mold smell. When I spoke to the desk the next morning they couldn't have been nicer and gave us the choice of three other rooms, and the manager carried our suitcases up the stairs for us. So here's the thing. This property is genuinely old - from colonial times. I'm a sucker for history and I think in the past I just loved its historical romantic feel. However, now I think comfort is more important to me. The beds are old and not so comfy, and in the new room the bathroom was so small it was hard to turn around in. The stairs are quite small and steep so if you are elderly be careful. I was also disappointed in the free "hot breakfast" as it was mostly eggs and such which I can't eat, although to be fair, it is free and better than most chain hotels. So in summary, if you like romance and history this is a lovely place, but if you prioritize comfort or luxury you might be happier elsewhere.
There is an small intimate bar where we had drinks before dinner. The Manhattans were excellent. We both had the shrimp cocktails which is one of the best shrimp cocktails around. I had the Chilean Sea Bass which was out of this world. My wife opted for a beet salad. Which was good but had some type of strange greens. For dessert we shared a creme brulee which was good. Our server was efficient and friendly. We have been there many times and we always return.
I recently stayed at the Inn for a wedding weekend - the staff was very nice and helpful. The food at the wedding was very good. The accommodations left a bit to be desired. I was originally placed in the Ambler suite, beautiful room, and then based on the Brides wishes moved to the Buzby room #116 - what a letdown, I could only stand in the center of the room and bathroom - the ceiling was way too low and the room desperately in need of an update. The bathroom was a good size, except for the slant of the ceiling, so when you took a shower - after waiting 10 minutes for the water to get hot - there was no water pressure and you had to stand under the faucet because of the ceiling. The Air-conditioner was loud and kept cycling all night, so it would wake me every 20 minutes when it kicked on. there was no dresser, so I had to use the chair to put my suitcase on to go through my clothes, the armoire was small, but it did fit the two dresses I brought with me, although it was short and the longer dress pooled at the bottom. As I said a much different room then I was originally placed in which had a beautiful fireplace, and a walk in shower that had been all updated. As well as all the other rooms in the farmhouse that was rented for the wedding party. I expected the rates for the rooms to be different, but was told since it was a wedding that the rates were all the same, if that was the case, they should have told me that when they moved me to this horrible room. The response stated: “The room you were in typically goes for $169-$179.00 plus tax.” I wouldn’t pay that for this room at all, and I was very disappointed when I went to the website and found I could just book one of the rooms for less than the wedding rate of $159.00 per night plus tax. Thanks for the wedding break when they booked a whole house! As I said I would go for dinner, but never stay there again the rooms for the rates are not worth the money – stay at the Holiday Inn 2 miles away and just go there for the dinner. Oh and don't expect the internet to work - it did not work well at all, kept dropping on my phone and we tried to set up a ROKU and it would not connect.
Upon opening the door to our room we were hit with an overwhelming smell of mildew and or mold upon arrival. Like so many other reviews mentioned. Then I killed 4 large black flies causing us to examine the room more closely. Under the bed was an inch of dust with about 25 dead flies. We decided to push on. We Stayed in room 108 in the Cory Beck house. Our room had a nice two person jacuzzi which we enjoyed. Other than the above mentioned our room was nice. Lunch and dinner were nice. Food was good and staff was very friendly. The food was over priced for what it was though. Prices should have been about one third cheaper in my opinion. I'm a 55 year old man an have eaten around the world and it was definitely over priced.
The rooms are split between different buildings, giving a sense of special locality. There is a back-in-time sensibility that is very peaceful, very restful. The room we stayed in was identified by name, not by number. The grounds are considerable; you feel close to the country. Very enjoyable low-key weekend -- just what we wanted
Beautiful outdoor dining. Always fun when there is an outdoor wedding or rehearsal. Great food, wine and free show! Scallops are amazing! Always feels like a mini escape because of the lovely setting!
This hotel was very nice. I was in a good location, next to a mall but not too loud. It was very old fashioned but it was nice. The rooms are great. They were big and had comfortable beds. The staff was friendly and courteous. It was just overall a great experience. Highly suggest if you don't want a brand name hotel!
We were at dinner at 7:15, and 2 items (one of their most expensive wines, and another an entree) were not available. When a new entree was selected, the higher price was still charged. Would have been nice to get the price of the originally priced meal. Still, I would go back again. Lovely atmosphere, and the piano music on Saturday was enjoyable. That being said, we had a very nice meal
I stayed here for one night and plan on returning. Very charming location and history. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Free breakfast is included. Rooms are spacious and clean. Would love to return in the warmer months once all the tees are in bloom.
