Wonderful hotel in a lovely village, pub next to the hotel was cosy and had roaring fires which added to the ambience. Ensuite Bedroom was beautiful with marvellous facilities. The staff in all areas were exceptional and the young man on reception was most helpful. We stayed for two nights and enjoyed every minute of it. Breakfast was superb and we will definitely be making a return visit. Minster Lovell is ideally situated to visit Burford and Whitney and many other lovely places in the Cotswolds.
This hotel is perfect for a romantic winter getaway. The views in the rooms near the lake are stunning. It’s in close proximity to Burford so if you like English traditional landscapes this is the perfect place for you
We were looking forward to a stay at this hotel after a busy Christmas at home. Sadly it didn't live up to our expectations. Breakfast was good but it was downhill thereafter; the evening meals being particularly disappointing. Although the photos of the hotel 'sell' the place, it was not suitable for holding a New Year's Eve event, with the function held over two sites. The hotel were holding weddings on two consecutive days whilst we were there, which undoubtedly put the staff under pressure, and at times meant that service was slow. Sorry, not five star in our book.
Our double bed looked big, but was actually 2 singles pushed together, so there was a join in the middle. We each had what was described as an 'aromatherapy' massage, but no aroma was actually used! I have read other reviews saying the same - why call it aromatherapy when no essential oils are used? The massages were pleasant, but not fragrant!
We were slightly worried after looking at some of the reviews, as this was our first return visit since the ‘take-over’ from the de Savery family. We have stayed here many times before and always had a very enjoyable stay. From the moment I telephoned and spoke to Louise (who is brilliant) on reception, everything ran smoothly, a friendly welcome on our arrival and the room Louise allocated us was great, very clean and tidy. Some reviews of the restaurant and staff were also mixed recently, but dinner on both nights was excellent, great food. Restaurant staff, Andrew and Lucy were great and a special mention for Luke in the restaurant (this young chap will go far in life), all very professional, polite and so helpful...thanks guys! Breakfast is now ‘a la carte’ and although we loved the previous buffet style, I have to say breakfast is now better, still good quality food and lots of choice but better service from the staff. I wouldn’t want to pay any more than we did for our stay but still really happy if they keep rates at current levels, We are after all now planning our next visit here!
New Years Eve Party & Two Weddings during our two day stay proved too much for the Kitchen Staff . Food was average, overcooked or bland. Staff however were very accomodation & helpful, always smiling & our bedroom was lovely
Classic room poor, and food choice limited and poor over the two day break, breakfasts good best varied choice and quality by far.Difficulty was the distance between entertainment area and restaurant, due to inclement weather and wearing evening dress.
We used to go to The Old Swan pub/restaurant regularly some years ago but have not been recently as our last experience was poor. We tried again on a lunch time the week following New Year intending to have lunch but it felt unwelcoming and miserable. The beers were poor and the snack we ordered at the bar took so long to appear that we gave up and went somewhere else. While we were there two other couples came in, looked around and left. The menu of "classics" is overpriced.
Decided for once to go away for Christmas, and the choice was bang on, superb food, excellent service, it never failed, we met some great people and had a lovely time.....will we go again, you bet we will...
My mother and I booked the 3-night Christmas package at the hotel, and had a fabulous time. Not knowing the hotel at all, and having only Tripadvisor reviews to go on, I was a bit concerned that it might not live up to expectations, but need not have worried. We booked a superior twin room (which had to be in The Old Mill as none of The Old Swan rooms are twin). Whilst being more modern, the building has a homely feel and is well laid out. Ours was a very comfortable and warm room (as was the whole hotel throughout our stay) with comfortable beds and a modern bathroom (with lovely mood lighting). Beverley and Oscar had left us a Christmas card and gift of matching shower gel and body lotion, and there was also complementary sloe gin. My only criticism was the walk-in shower which, although lovely and powerful, flooded the toilet room next to it – this was unavoidable, there being no shower door. There were plenty of staff on hand at all times and they were all, without exception, welcoming, friendly and helpful. The food was wonderful, right down to the afternoon tea on arrival and two champagne and canapés receptions (where corners could easily have been cut). My only (very slight) criticism is the choice on our first night was limited, there being only fillet steak or vegetarian tart main courses to choose from (but both were delicious). Christmas lunch was excellent, as was the extensive buffet laid on that evening (which was difficult to do justice!). Breakfast each day was first class, with a large choice cooked to order, as well as buffet pastries, cereal, toast, yoghurts, fruit, juices, smoothies, cold meats and cheese. We went to the spa on Christmas morning. It is quite small, but very new and clean and we loved the steam room and pool (which is called a plunge pool but is the size of a holiday villa pool – plenty of room to swim a short length). As our room was the nearest guest room to the spa, we were able to walk back in our gowns and slippers – if we had been staying in the Old Swan, we would have had to get dressed to go back to our room. We had decided we would pay the £25 each as we love a spa, but I do understand why some might resent paying – it is small and only 10 people maximum are allowed in at any one time. Afternoon tea on the first day, and champagne/canapés were served in our building, but all other meals were in the Old Swan, necessitating a walk over the road. This was not a huge problem, although heavy rain made it a bit difficult for us to negotiate puddles in our party heels in the dark (special thanks to Armando for helping us across!). Some of the hotel guests walked up to midnight mass in the local church on Christmas Eve, and staff met us outside afterwards with lanterns to guide us, serving us hot chocolate and mince pies when we got back at 1:00 am. There was entertainment at various times (eg. a band on Christmas Eve and a storyteller on Christmas Day) – these differed slightly from the programme on the website, but there was a board at Reception detailing each day’s events. We had given our meal times in advance but were not pressed to sit down on the dot – in fact, Oscar presented us with a glass of prosecco each when we arrived for Boxing Day dinner, which we sat and drank in the bar – the staff’s emphasis was very much on guests’ relaxation and enjoyment. I thoroughly recommend this as a Christmas getaway to remember.
