The food seemed very nice at the time although over priced for the standard of furnishings, quite dated and quite small. Service was slow however they seemed understanding regarding my daughter was Coeliac, evening bring out 'gluten free bread' which seriously impressed us! She ordered Rib Eye steak which regardless should not be a problem for a chef to prepare gluten free as naturally it is! On leaving the hotel she was really ill and struggled to walk back to our apartment. I am not sure where the restaurant made a mistake but clearly they glutened her. I phoned to report an hour after our departure and spoke to the manager as I was so annoyed because it spoiled our evening and his attitude was completely dismissive. There was no apology and due to our decent expenditure here +140 I remained annoyed hence our review.
Went for one night. The room was very small and only a double bed. Probably would be ok for one person. Didn't have good so can't comment as went to the pub in the village. The garden looked nice but couldn't use it as the weather was awful. The room was free as we got it by test driving a car so maybe that's why we got a poor room. Wouldn't stay again although it's a pretty village.
We stayed here for two nights to explore Yorkshire the position of the hotel is very good for this as you can reach the coast or the elegant city of Harrogate easily. The staff were very nice, polite friendly and very helpful. The food is undoubtedly exceptional although a little old fashioned which could be interpreted as part of the Yorkshire charm.. We only ate breakfast here but fellow residents were unanimous that the food was good. However all this is let down as this hotel is in dire need of a refurb even if it's just a damn good painting and spring clean (cleanliness is not high on the list here) it would make all the difference as the actual building itself is magnificent.
As a family group of 16 guests we spent three nights at The Worsley Arms. We were all delighted with the hotel, staff and kitchen. Hovingham is a beautiful village with a bakery and charming Saturday market in a picture perfect setting, with the hotel in the centre. The cottages on the green were just perfect for our family get together at our son's Confirmation. Cosy, clean rooms with newly refurbished bathrooms, a lovely bar to meet and a stunning dinning room for our Confirmation dinner. Staff was courteous and friendly, very patient with difficult children, and always helpful. We were blown away with the food by the cook Andrew ( and we were a discerning group with a half French godmother, a foodie brother in law who travels the world for Michelin starred restaurants and me a spoiled Londoner interested in food ). Best ingredients, locally sourced, seasonal menu and classic dishes such as the English breakfast perfectly executed. His fish and chips were the best I have ever eaten in England! I loved his spot on seasoning and confident exploration of dishes. Of the three dinners we had, the exceptional dishes were the pigeon on black pudding (tasty, non fatty black pudding locally produced) and the side dish of peas with samphire and bacon. Andrew suggested the perfect menu with three choices each for our 3 course celebration dinner. It was matched with a very interesting wine list, by Tony who is a Master Sommelier. The evening was a huge success and could not have been better. The Worsley Arms has always been the preferred accommodation for parents visiting their children at the nearby boarding school, We understand why and recommend The Worsley Arms wholeheartedly. THANK YOU!
Proper North Yorkshire Hotel as it should be. Can't wait to go back. The staff are exceptional, the food exquisite, the wine....well just fantastic. If you want a boring sterile hotel - don't come here...if you want real class in North Yorkshire, that welcomes dogs, welcomes its guests as individuals and provides a high class stay, that is charming and welcoming then this is a gem. My dog Poppy also thoroughly approves. This place is pure class at its best..thank you all for such a brilliant stay.
This property was nothing like as advertised. We were given a room in 'the cottage's 100 metres away. The 'cottages' is a building with many rooms within, like student accommodation. I sat on the bed and was covered in dog hairs. A short time after entering the room my husband had allergic reactions. We were booked in for 2 nights and complained that we could not stay. We did not have the opportunity of staying in the main building or the offer of a refund.we had the feeling that they couldn't care less. Bear in mind also there are no lights in the village and if you are unfortunate enough to be put into the so-called 'cottages' aka student accommodation you will need to request a torch from reception.
We spent a very enjoyable couple of days walking around Hovingham and a night at the Worsley Arms. First plus point for us was that the hotel is cycle friendly - secure storage - although on this occasion we didn't use it. There was a friendly welcome on arrival and we had a couple of excellent pints of blond pre dinner. Our main courses; battered cod and the pork chop were both well cooked. I particularly enjoyed the gin and tonic batter and samphire accompaniment. Our room was clean and well equipped. The bathroom was also clean and the shower was very good. Service at breakfast was pleasant although we did feel a little rushed despite being the only ones eating. Despite a small misunderstanding at checkout we would definitely return. Thank you
Last minute booking for us as a journey breaker. Shown to our room promptly by a friendly gentleman, room was spacious but a bit tired and in need of updating. Few touches would change the room, i.e. replace the stained door net curtain, the stain is by the handle (brass) so assume it is caused by cleaning, bed cover has indentations at the foot, unsure as to the cause. On the bed was placed a teddy bear with a price tag and a cardboard sleeve to attach to your room door for cleaning convenience, nice idea. We had dinner on the first night of our stay which was fabulous, the desserts to die for! We were served quickly but would have liked to linger a bit more, the food does deserve to be lingered over. The staff were polite but did seemed stressed and jumpy but as it was bank holiday I assumed they were under pressure. Breakfast next morning wasn't as good a standard, lacked fruit choices only prune, watermelon available. The cooked plate was nice, the eggs tasty, but overall bit dissapointing after the spectacular dinner of the night before. The hotel does take dogs so ideal for pet owners who could reserve tables in the bar so their dog can accompany them at mealtimes, also dogs are allowed in the lounge area, which is rarely the case in hotels. Overall a pleasant hotel but it does need some TLC which would enhance the experience. The village is quaint and picturesque, with lovely scenic public footpaths to walk among the rape seed fields. Also the little tearoom/bakery at the bottom of the village is worth a visit as it's situated next to a pretty brook and row of cottages. I would definitely recommend this hotel to dog owners, ideal.
Just passing through on a short stay over. Wonderful menu with good selection, reasonably priced and perfectly prepared. Well done ! Worth visiting for the food alone. This country hotel was charming but perhaps could do with a bit of a makeover in the public areas. But don't let that detract you from visiting. Staff attentive and helpful. Would happily revisit.
My wife and I have recently returned from another two-night stay at the Worsley Arms and agree it's like visiting an old friend. This 1840s hotel simply oozes charm and is quite literally country-house living at its best, Great food, wonderful wine, friendly attentive staff and the chance to pat a dog or two. A persuasive way to relax for a couple of days.
