we booked a 2 night stay with travelzoo and found the staff very welcoming and friendly, the hotel sits at a crossroads in a very pretty village with a ford and a stately home and we enjoyed our time here, swallows nest in the eaves to our cottage which was across the road from the hotel....only criticism i would have is traffic noise as its a period building there is no double glazing so early morning its a bit of an issue
We stayed here having booked through travel zoo. If you are looking for a chic modern hotel this probably isn't the place, it's probably best described as a traditional country hotel. Our room was quite small and the decor was a little dated, however, it had everything we needed for a short break and was very clean and tidy. The owners are very friendly and the staff were helpful throughout our stay. the surrounding countryside is beautiful and the village of Hovingham is small but very attractive. There are some nice walks from the hotel and you can easily reach the Ebor way. The dinner menu in the hotel is on the expensive side but the food was good and includes quite a lot of local produce. Breakfast was included within our deal and was excellent as well as being locally sourced. There are various lounges to relax in and a very pleasant bar with open fire and real ale. All in all it was a lovely relaxing break in the Yorkshire countryside.
We booked a 2 night stay through Travel Zoo. Staff were very friendly. Our room was ok but very warm and the window wouldn’t stay open. The bathroom was clean but the shower wasn’t particularly good - not a lot of power. We ate in the restaurant on our first night - food was ok but we thought expensive for what you got so the second night we went to the Malt Shovel which is a few minutes walk away. Good pub grub and good service - would recommend it. They have a captive audience in the village as there are only these 2 places to eat.
We booked through Travelzoo for a two night stay. We were made to feel welcome and nothing too much trouble. Food was good and rooms were very comfortable. A lovely place to stay. A very well kept picturesque village setting.
Booked a 2-night break through TravelZoo as we wanted to explore a previously unknown area. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had a room in the main hotel (room 10) and this was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was down a few steep steps. The hotel is in a great location for exploring the North Yorkshire Moors and the Howardian Hills and Castle Howard is only a short drive away. The breakfast menu was very good with a good selection of cereals and fruit. The full Worsley Arms Breakfast was delicious and there is also a good choice of lighter alternatives.
My friend and I leave the lovely 'wifelets' for a week about this time of year..following a tearful goodbye (!), we spend two days in North Yorkshire and then travel for the rest of the week to Alnmouth, just outside Newcastle..you guessed for a Society GOLF holiday! I think this is the fourth year we have stayed at the 'Worsley' and we will be back for more. In a past life, I worked for a major UK Bank, specialising in Risk Analysis, Sanctioning and Recoveries / legal work, for nearly 40 years. So I do have a knowledge of the business ethic required for a successful company to grow and survive. I have a close friend, now retired who was a Director of a large publicly quoted Hotel Group, who advised me with restructuring issues. The Worsley is professionally run by a husband and wife team, who clearly have a wealth of experience in the Hotel sector. Quite often with country hotels, where local staff are recruited, training is omitted..not so at the 'Worsley'..whether actioned 'in-house' or externally I have no idea, but all staff are equally professional, friendly and interact easily with clients. I was a little disappointed to see a few of the Tripadvisor reviews, commenting adversely upon the fabric of the building. I fail to see anything other than a well cared for Georgian building with clear evidence of a rolling maintenance programme. Only a minor matter, but I reported at reception, a slightly loose bathroom shelf, which was promptly repaired. If you want the plastic, then stay in a Travelodge or Premier Inn Hotel..fine for the business traveller, which I was for many years, but don't knock those proprietors who work hard for the traditional and somewhat unique experience at a very affordable tariff. Can't say enough for their chef, who reliably turns out the best cooked and quality breakfasts, most of the ingredients locally sourced..the 'Full Worsley' something to be savoured! Dinner is also a grand experience, with an interesting menu and again, quality ingredients. Watch out however for 'mine host' a Sommelier, with a cellar to be envied..very persuasive with the wine list..not unduly so, but you will be tempted! Always an enjoyable and satisfying stay here..lots of brilliant Golf Courses locally....Kirkbymoorside a favourite and not forgetting the North Yorkshire Railway trip from Pickering to Whitby..beautiful moorside country and a return to circa 1950's leisurely steam travel. Finally, take a few hours and have a few pints with the locals and you'll realise what we miss in the South..we have the sun and they have the rain, yet their spirit is hardly diminished..friendly and open..enjoy!
We have stayed here three times and will definitely stay lots more times. The owners of the hotel are so friendly and make you feel so completely welcome. This was the first time we went with our dog and nothing was too much trouble for them - we weren't sure if we had to leave her in our room whilst we had breakfast and dinner, but they have a couple of tables in the bar area so we were able to sit eat there with our dog. You get the same excellent service as you do in the restaurant. The food is absolutely amazing. We sat in the gorgeous garden and enjoyed a bottle of wine. Thank you once again for a wonderful stay.
Came here on a last minute two nights Travelzoo deal. When we book these trips, there's an element of going into the unknown, but we needn't have worried. A few adverse comments on Tripadvisor were, I feel, unjustified. If you want modern style shiny steel and glass, then you're unlikely to find it in our countryside. What you will get at The Worsley Arms is a great feeling of relaxation and comfort. It's a proprietor led business and Tony is very hands on and passionate about providing good service. The wine list has some very interesting inclusions at reasonable prices and the food is exceedingly well cooked and presented. We intended to eat out on our second night, but we were so impressed by evening dinner on the first night, we had to go back for more! Tony's wife and son also work there and, along with the rest of the friendly staff, all helped to provide us with a memorable stay. We will definitely be going back a) because we liked what we got and b) there's a lot to see in the area and we didn't do it all.
We stayed two nights, generally the food was excellent, please note it's not pub grub, so it's a bit pricey. The staff are very pleasant and helpful. The let down is the buildings: a complete refurbishment is needed and yes if you are in a cottage room you might get wet trying to go over to the hotel. Our duvet was too small for the (comfortable enough) bed, so not conducive to a good night's sleep. The toilet seat was the cheapest of the cheap, as were the paper handkies; and to be honest I think at £132 a night a complimentary bottle of water should be a must have. The shower was tiny, yet the bedroom and bathroom generously sized. We were impressed by the speed of the central heating, the room became toasty within minutes. It's a good location, but definitely overpriced.
My husband and I had stayed here before and decided to have a two night break. We booked dinner in the restaurant for 8.00pm. Just before eight we sat in restaurant and were not attended to or offered any menus despite the FAA to tgat the waitress came in three times. Eventually a waiter brought some menus. The waitress came to take our order and I asked whether the chicken was in a sauce. She said she would find out and let me know. She never came back to me. Another waiter came to take our order and he advised about the chicken. I ordered soup but when it came I had no spoon and one was not provided. I had to request one. After I had eaten half my soup the waiter brought cheese and onion bread rolls. I requested a plain whole meal roll. It finally arrived twenty minutes after I had finished eating my soup. The waiter seemed surprised when I said I no longer required it as I had finished my soup. My husband ordered the burger wth 'hand cut chips'. These turned out to be frozen oven chips and at nearly sixteen pounds was not impressed. My meal was awful. I left most of it. No one asked if our meals were ok or if we enjoyed them. We didn't. Breakfast next morning was just as bad. We had no spoons for cereal on the table. My husband ordered the scrambled egg on toast. He got a plate with scrambled eggs and nothing else. Our toast rack had four half pieces of toast while others had five or six. Seeing he had to use two for his scrambled egg we asked for some extra toast. We never got it. All in all very disappointed about the service and although they say there is two places to eat it is same menu and price in both places. The food is not special at all and has wierd tastes that made my meal inedible. Although the pub is in a lovely setting we would not stay there again.
