JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort and Spa

4.5 out of 5.0

I loved my stay at the Marriott in Guanacaste. I went for 4 nights in the low season (August) and fell in love with the hotel. It is in a very remote area, within about a 20 minute drive to Tamarindo. Tamarindo was just OK, but if you have a rental car it's a nice place to go out for dinner. The hotel is about 1.25 hours from the Liberia airport and is in a remote area... so beware if that's not your thing. When I walked into my room for the first time, I fell in love! Probably the nicest room I have ever stayed at. The hotel staff was very nice & responsive... and I was even given a tour upon arrival. The pool area was heaven. Very expansive, lots of lounge chairs, and right there on the ocean. The ocean is a bit rough, so if you have kids it's a good place to play in the sand, but probably better to swim in the pool. It was very quiet in August since it's CR's low season, but I loved it. I was disappointed that each restaurant wasn't opened every single night and you do need to make reservations for some of the restaurants. I dunno, I hate making reservations on a beach holiday... but I complained to management when I was told there was going to be an hour and half wait, and they handled it very well and found a very reasonable solution. This is a beach destination... so if you're looking for rainforest or volancoes I would suggest also booking near Arenal. Beautiful hotel, awesome rooms, friendly staff, and breathtaking grounds.

Great location next to little hawaii surf spot The beach club is near by and has access tp avellana beach as well as lola's beach bar

Just back from our 3rd trip to this GEM: location, staff, design, food, amenities, et al provide for a truly unique kind of vacation - accommodating a wide range of interests and desires - for those who are highly-active to those who prefer an ultra-relaxing vacation. From our arrival greeted by our old friend Manual (who we met for the first time in 2010) to ongoing great customer service from our old friend, concierge David (who we met for the first time in 2013), we felt nothing but Pura Vida love. All of this JW's mgmt & staff and most of the local people were warm, honest, fun and proactively supportive. Better than most places I've traveled...and I've "been around"... We've stayed in 3 different room types at this property - all great! Tamarindo restaurants and expansive empty beaches are only minutes away in each direction (north and south) - plenty of surf spots to choose from and even a beach club with lockers directly in front of one of the better breaks when the waves are big. In sum, there is no other luxury hotel or location offering such a wide range of things to do or not do. Ya gotta love tropical weather, loving people, thunderstorms, humidity, the ocean and ultra-lush green rain jungle to enjoy costa rica and this property. If you surf or like the 86 degree warm water waves, welcome to nirvana.

Loved taking long walks down the beach when the tide was out.

We stayed in Guanacaste for almost a week. We booked tours for 4 days and so we were mostly away during the day and back to the hotel late on the afternoon. On our last day, we stayed in the hotel just relaxing and enjoying the beach and the pool. We didn't have problems with our transportation because the Ecotrans Tours took care of everything. The staff are very courteous. Room service is cheaper than eating at their restaurants. One time, we came home late from our tours. The housekeeper, Adriana A., has a unique way of upkeeping our room, like, she made an elephant out of 5 towels. Neat!!!

Nice place. Good for family vacation. Friendly staff. The pool could use a little cleaning (there's some mold on the edges)

Had wonderful stay there. Love the room, the service. Staff are very nice helpful. Food in the restaurants are ok, not very impressive.

Very comfortable resort that offers all amenities that you need for a great vacation. Very friendly staff that is responsive to the guests and their needs. Highly recommended for its pools, spa, sauna and steam room. Great restaurants and a great beach front.

The staff was extremely attentive to my every need. The spa area is immaculate and refreshing

This was our second time visiting the JW Marriott at Hacienda Pinilla, as usual, service beyond expectations! The menu has changed a little but it's still sooo good, even Room service meals are superb. Buffet breakfast top notch, all the bread selections, gallo pinto and omelettes made anyway you want them, oh! And honey fresh from the panal. You may want to try their fresh juices, you can choose what goes in them too. We took a suite and it was huge. The bathroom was an open space with the shower next to the tub, lovely. Sunsets are the best here! Just be careful with the tides and rip currents, check with the staff or the lifeguard.

It was nice to enjoy peace and quiet throughout this resort, during low season for our honeymoon. However, be prepared to be told many times that this service or that food or drink is unavailable because it is low season.

Beautiful location. The hotel was clean. Room was elegant and bed sooo comfortable. Food was good. My only complaint it that check in and out were a little slow. The receptionist was excellent but she was alone. Would love to go again!

hotel is very nice, some construction going on for the whole week which was annoying in the month of august. They should wait for busy season to go away before doing construction. The restaurants are good but the food is just plain ok. Yes, even in the Steak place is just okay. For the kind of money they ask, either the quality of food should be better or the prices should drop.

The hotel was nice - the beach was beautiful (and they do have these really nice pillows for the beach chairs) - but the rooms were overpriced for what they were and the location is too far in the middle of nothing to be worth it. The restaurant on the beach is pretty good, but the others are way too overpriced for what they are. Staff is nice (but the front desk staff was pretty rude upon check-in). Overall I would not recommend and would not stay there again just because it wasn't worth the high price of the rooms. Next time I'd either pay more for the Four Seasons etc or less for a different place.

The hotel itself is beautifully designed. The rooms are very stylish, with beautiful bathrooms and comfortable beds. The pool is huge. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Special thanks to the people at the free (!) Kids' Club, who took great care of our 6-year old son (who insisted on going back to the Kids Club again and again after trying it once). There are several restaurants within the hotel, but we did not like the food in any of them, except, ironically, for the little poolside cafe. In addition to the not-so-good food, we thought the hotel was too isolated - it takes about 30 minutes to get to the nearest town, Tamarindo. But, frankly, that was not such a big deal. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and will definitely come back.

When I arrived at hotel, they did not have my room ready. Had to wait a long time with them on phone with [...] for them to clear up their confusion. On night one, the air conditioning went out. Was out for five nights. Claim they will reimburse us for the cost -- but that remains to be seen. Location is far from town.On night three, my ceiling fan FELL from the ceiling. They moved my room to one with an inferior location. They never even apologized or did ANYTHING to make up for the inconvenience -- and SAFETY issue associated with this. I had to pack my room and move to another room -- They seemed very unconcerned.A great place -- very nice -- but they need to learn a bit about customer service. The young people working were nice -- but there was never a decision maker present. Very disappointing and inappropriate for a Marriott property.

The hotel is beautiful, and the staff tries to be very helpful. They always have a smile on their faces. [...] the hotel is very beautiful. The rooms are spacious and clean. The food is good. The pool is beautiful, and for the most part you didn't have to wake up at the crack of dawn to get a chair. We have traveled extensively, and I would put this hotel at 4 stars. We went off the resort to go on a canopy zipline tour. Which was alot of fun. We also went into Tamarindo. You can do the whole town in about 2 hours. My husband played golf and he said the monkeys were watching in laughing.Overall a good resort, with a couple issues.

The JW Marriott Guanacaste was a very nice resort hotel. The service was outstanding, the food was excellent (but a bit overpriced), the pool was fantastic and the hotel was right on the beach. There were a few rocks to be careful of in the ocean just off the beach, but not too bad. We had very clean rooms. The bad part about the location is that you have to drive down a DIRT road for at least 2 - 3 miles to get there. Unless you are planning on staying at the hotel to do everything (which we didn't) it's just not the best location.

This was truly an excellent hotel. Grounds, rooms, and pool, jacuzzi was very beautiful. Only issue was that the beach is not the greatest. A lot of rocks when the tide was out, although we found this to be a minor issue. We still swam everyday but saw many nicer beaches in Costa Rica.

I made one phone call home for 16 minutes, it cost $56.00 RIDICULOUS. Internet for $3.00/half hour Expensive. Breakfast Very expensive $25.00 per person. Steakhouse very nice but also expensive $180.00/couple. Not a good location and beach has a fair amount of rocks and can be a problem.
