this is not your typical all inclusive resort - rather simple and straight forward. Staff tries and is friendly - rooms are clean but small - buffets have decent choices, nothing special. Beach area is volcanic sand, water very muddy and vendors constantly pestering you. Apparently, the Occidental Hotel Group is looking for a buyer for the property and does not put much effort into improvements. This resort is mostly catering to native families, which makes it a nice experience.
Not a nice beach...volcanic dust covers the sand...water not clean. Food was not that good and Drinks were watered down.
Hotel was at nice place near ocean beach, Food was excellent, Transportation was very good
if you like a good resort to go back at night, this is the place. For the rest rent a car and go explore.
We really enjoyed our stay. The Animation Team was super nice. The food was okay. We liked that there was a van to take you to your room. We would go there again.
this was our second trip there in the last 6 months . the people were as nice as before and remembered us . we felt safe and happy .
location is great pool is great. beach at hotel ok go the white beach:there is a free boat ride to go there every day
The hotel was good for the price, food was actually excellent and people very nice. The resort is big and on the hill, but great view. Ocean was not so clean but that might be the time (July).
When we booked this vacation we were supposed to get a Honeymoon package which is free room upgrade, fresh flowers, stocked frig. i told them this at check-in and they said they had no other rooms to move us to check back tomorrow. Meanwhile, the resort was empty. The next day we had rotten fruit and they did put water bottles and juice in the frig. The food was just awful. We are glad we rented a car and ate out a couple meals. The drinks were a joke, watered down with cheap alcohol. The pool was nice. Very spacious and clean. The views were breathtaking. The resort is very pretty on the outside. Our room was so run down. The bathroom was absolutely disgusting and dirty. This was our first time to Costa Rica with our boys. We had an amazing time outside the resort. We learned our lesson not to book below a 3 star but I think this resort is a 2 star and they should be ashamed of themselves for not putting any effort into making it a nicer place. I would never recommend this resort to anyone.
My family of 5 absolutely loved it here. It was an incredible value. The buffets had a wide variety of choices so that even my 3 picky children (ages 9, 17, and 19) had a lot they loved to eat. We were amazed to see many monkeys in the trees by the beach one morning and on the private island their boat takes you to (we took the boat twice - the first day the monkeys were there the whole time - the second day the monkeys didn't come out until we were just about to leave). It was like being in their playground - mothers with baby monkeys on their backs, etc. Take some bananas from the buffet and they will come right up to you! The air conditioning stopped working once, but it was only a fuse. Same thing happened to our kids' room, so it must be a common problem. They promptly fixed it. We had a great view of the ocean/gulf. Local raccoon-like creatures come up close since they're used to being fed also. They also had good shows and entertainment. All in all, you can't beat the price - it's only a like more money than a hotel. I'd heard the food was bland, so I brought hot sauces and spicy condiments from home. I didn't need them. They have a local tasty sauce called "Salsa" in stores and they also have Tabasco. Everything was really great. Wish we'd had more time there, but we stayed at a boring timeshare our first 7 nights and only had 3 nights here.
The hotel has a great view of the beach. The staff is nice. I probably wouldn't stay here again. Its to far from the city.
It is an old hotel without maintenance, the a/c doesn't work, the shower doesn't work, the shoutle bus doesn't work, there are a lot of rays near to the beach, so it's dangerous to get in the sea. Won't go there again.
Clean on day one but disappointed with room amenities. Although this was an all inclusive reservation, there was no stocked mini bar, no room service and no coffee available in our room. The bathroom was old and towels were not always provided or changed. The room was never swept and there was a consistent trail of ants everyday. We could hear the next door neighbors yelling, arguing, regurgitating, etc. Walls are paper thin. The accommodations were substandard compared to the accommodations we have had in Mexico. Had the rooms been cleaned and towels provided it would have made a difference. The staff work their butts off to entertain and converse with all the tourists. The stars of the week were Mainor, Madelyn and Cristian. The music was a little loud but they constantly keep the children entertained. I feel like I should receive a refund :-(
Overall I had expected it to be a value hotel. It is in need updating. I would give it 2 stars not 3 The room- Was very outdated and the beds were old and had a musky smell. Dresser was falling apart. Fridge was hot inside. NO mini bar. Cost 15 a day for 2 beer. 2 water, 2 soda. Not worth it for ocean view. We had a view of the pool. Not what we paid for and they didn't care. The 2nd and 3rd floor are considered ocean view. Recommend building 10 and 11 closer to everything. Building 15 is on pool level. Food- be selective what you eat. Many friends we made had food poisoning not to mention my friend who I traveled with. The food is recycled from lunch to dinner. Bring immodium just in case and gastrolyt. The Bathroom- No hot water and a moldy shower curtain w water stains on the floor. Bathroom door wouldnt close at all. Pool- Great pool Staff- All staff were great and treated everyone great. Not like mexico where they expect a tip for every little thing they do. The nightly shows were....very very sad. The staff tries really hard to make it a great show. It really wasn't. Location- water taxi on the beach if you have 4 or more ppl going you can barter and say 20 each or you can also cab it into town for 20 each. The driver will wait for about 4 hours for 80. For 25 each you can have a night out dt coco beach and return to the hotel at about 4am. We rented a car for 84 a day with gps and premium coverage. Make sure you agree on a price in writing before you take the car or he may add more when you return. Money- recommend you convert your money to the colonial currency. The correct conversion is 540 colonials to 1 american dollar. Convert before you head out to shop or you will be ripped off plenty. Shopping- prices are very high for everything. they do not barter and don't seem to care if you buy or not. Overall I did like the hotel but it is need of repairs and updating. I wouldn't recommend this hotel. Spend the extra money and go to the Rui.
Overall the staff was very friendly and I enjoyed my time in the resort. My only concern was that the pool by the bar had a bit of a urination smell, so needless to say I did not spend too much time near that pool area.
The beach is black sand so the water can get very mucky, not very ideal to wade around in. The pool area however is very large and beautiful so it makes up for the lack of swimable beach area. They do offer a free boat service to a "white sand" beach which definitely is a better beach than the one at the resort. It's made of little rocks and shells though, and not sand. We went around 9:30am and were brought back at around 3:00pm despite being told we would be brought back at 1:30pm. Drinks are provided while there, and they have these horrible looking ham and cheese sandwiches they offer for lunch. So my advice to you would be to eat a big breakfast or to bring your own snack with you. Our room was great. I was worried after reading some negative reviews but we had a positive experience in building 5. Our towels were replaced daily and the air conditioning worked perfectly (I read reviews where this was not the case).
the price was soo low , it was better then i expect. the beach is not nice but it is not the hotel fault. the staff was efficient and very nice. food was simple but we like it. we had a reservation at the italian restaurant and that was a great choice. the hotel room need an updathing but for the price we paid it was expecting. if you are looking for a nice beach you are at the wrong place but if you are on a budget. you will be happy.
1) Food sucks 2) Long lines to eat and get drinks 3) Under age drinking allowed. The pool area smells foul - Vomit from night partying. Mass tourism for high school seniors that want to get loaded. 4) Beach is black sand mud. Don't waste your money....
Everything was great!! The staff was friendly and courteous. The food was excellent. The price was awesome for all inclusive. The black beach and the views were breathtaking!
