This is about what you would expect from a lodge that's main purpose is to transport hikers to and from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. There is really nothing to do in the area other than hike, and you can hear people moving around in other rooms. Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. It is sufficiently clean. The continental breakfast was nothing special. The bus you ride to the Crossing (if you choose to do so) is old and moldy and pretty disgusting. But, you're about to go on a 12 mile hike so if you're riding on the bus, you probably won't mind the filth for 10 minutes. Overall, our stay was adequate. Nothing outstanding, nothing terrible.

Getting negatives out of the way first… Toilet looked dirty but was actually stained, so maybe it was clean. Some washcloths were very stained, so they also looked dirty. It must be tough to keep white washcloths looking clean when your guests tend to be hikers, but either bleach the white ones or replace with brown ones. Someone replaced a hand towel for me with a “clean” one, but it was still wet. Can’t try to check in early because the office closes mid-day. No tissues in the room. I had wi-fi issues while I was there, but it was after the office closed for the evening. The next day the wi-fi was fine. The walls in the room are paper thin. In the category of good AND bad – they squeezed in a couch that was too big for the space and easy to trip on when trying to squeeze by it, but it was nice to have a couch. Positives: The beds were comfortable and there were lots of blankets and pillows. Softest bedspread I have ever felt. There was a 2nd bedroom (nice!) with twin beds, and there was a place in there to put suitcases up off the floor. There was a kitchenette in the room with a microwave, fridge, toaster, dishes, etc. Heated towel rack in the bathroom, and a hand-held shower sprayer. They had a place to put recyclables out behind one building. The people in the office were nice. There was a lounge area in one building, and spa tubs that could be reserved in 30 minute increments. They provided a HUGE breakfast!

thanks for your review which is 4 our of 5 - most people do not mind the old bus it has character - you mention nothing of the fantastic speech the bus driver gives you and the excellent service you get for a room of $74 for two - you should have stayed for a little more money in a self contained villas we have on the other side with no noise but then some people do not want to pay for what they get.
