Great price for the location 2 blocks from hauptbanhof very convenient, great food nearby and kid friendly, rooms are clean and the staff is friendly. Building bit old but well taken care of, beds are comfortable, good room for the price.
My friend and I stayed at A&O Munich HBF in late December in a private room for 3 nights. We had paid for a private twin room but when we arrived we were placed in a quad room for just the two of us so there was plenty of space, with a private ensuite and a massive balcony. The room was nice including two single beds and a bunk bed, and the ensuite even included a bath tub! The hostel does have a lift to get to the rooms after a short flight of stairs. We were not told about breakfast by staff so we were unsure whether it was free or when it was served. The wifi in this hostel did not properly reach our room so it was a terrible connection. The staff in this accommodation were very nice and definitely tried their best to try and help us with any enquiries. The hostel is located about 5 minutes walk away from the Munich Hauptbahnhof and about a 10 minute walk from Marienplatz, which is awesome. All in all it was a mixed experience with this accommodation and if it weren't for the wifi situation it would have received a better rating.
I checked in a school group of 21 students here. I was greeted at the desk by an employee with their face in a curry on the desk. My colleague and I were then given a room miles away from the students and one which was already occupied respectively. Both of us had to be moved. The next night, I found someone else's things in my room and all my belongings missing. I had been checked out, and my luggage (including 21 students' passports) had been left in the luggage room. The manager refused to see me for two days, and then was totally uninterested in any giving more than a perfunctory apology. If you're taking a school group, go elsewhere. You do not need the incompetence and the hassle. If you're an individual / family, spend a bit more and go somewhere else. I will never book with them again.
This sounds extreme, but I have stayed at an A&O hostel in Prague before, in a dorm, and had a much better experience than in Munich. First of all I was assigned a dorm instead of a private room (which is what I had paid for) and I ended up walking in on a bunch of guys sleeping, freaking them out. It was late, I was exhausted from travelling, had loads of suitcases. Not good enough. From the pictures online the hostel looks very clean and nice but the reality is somewhat different. There are cracked window panes, scruffy corridors and there were holes and marks on my sheets when I finally got into my private room. I paid 166€ for what I thought would be a hotel-style private room (as advertised) but the standard was very disappointing. If you're looking for a crazy hostel experience then go for it, but if you are looking for the more expensive option of a private room after a tiring day then forget it. Oh, also, the WIFI does not work!!! DO NOT GO HERE!!!
On our second night the room was full of mosquitos and I mean full! The staff couldn't provide any bug spray to assist and we had to go and buy our own so our room was able to be slept in. Despite doing this we had already been bitten all over! We stayed during Oktoberfest so alternate accomodation wasn't possible. On the third night we had another person staying at the hostel barge into our room at 1am as the staff didn't check us in properly and checked them into our room. The doors couldn't be locked from the inside and this was a horrible experience waking up to someone coming into your room in the middle of the night in a strange country. We sorted this our the next day at the front desk but it happened again the next morning! Absolutely ridiculous! We were so happy to put this experience behind us.
A couple of friends and myself stayed this weekend. Access to the Fest and the City was uppermost in our reasons for choosing this hotel. I knew from the start this was no 5 Star boudoir as it's sparce but functional.it does to have what is needed to sustain life although we didnt try anything from the kitchen. Rooms were clean and freshened each day. Bed a little smaller than I'm used to but workable... Only gripe is the pillow that had to be folded in half... and half again, and then spend the night trying to balance your head on it, about as useful as a handkerchief.... even Bear Grylls wouldve cried himself to sleep. The location was fantastic, the hotel spotlessly clean and staff were splendidly helpful and welcoming.. Just I felt it was massively overpriced, but it is in the middle of the Beer fest so I shouldn't be surprised.. If you dont want to be far from the action then here is good as I'm sure all the local hotels will charge what they want. I did however enjoy my stay.. But also some of that may have been down to the wonderful beer.
A&O may look alright from the outside and seem like decent value but don't let this deceive you. The 8 bed dorm we paid for was down in the basement and it seemed as if staff hadn't been down there for years. The place was disgustingly dirty, and there was no sign of bedsheets being changed. There was a serious lack of friendliness from staff, and we did not feel at all welcome or safe. Would avoid at all costs
Besides the location of the hostel with decent prices offered, there is nothing to write about this property. The rooms are mediocre and the staffs are pretty cold. Even the tea and coffee are chargeable and I really could not think of something good to write about this property.
Like every other A&O it looks more like a hotel than a hostel: little atmosphere and everything (except for tea) costs money. There's not even a kitchen and the 14-bed dorm resembles a prison. It is located close to the hauptbahnhof though.
Great balcony at room 108 with a fantastic view of a roof and an amazing atmosphere. But be warned, it's not all good news I'm afraid... The bath in 112 is absolutely riddled with jellyfish and poo and is quite frankly unacceptable! Other than this small inconvenience I would highly recommend.
