Belini is one you step into. Close the gate in the high fence behind you and the rest of the world goes quiet: limestone paths, clipped coastal plants, a croquet lawn, birds in the trees, and somewhere beyond it all, the sound of the ocean. This three-bedroom house in Rye sleeps seven, and it's one of our favourite places on the Peninsula. The House The living room runs the length of the house, with a fire at each end: a freestanding wood burner at one and a gas log fire at the other. Full-length windows look out over the garden, so even on a grey day the green comes inside. In winter, it's one of the cosiest rooms we know, and firewood is waiting when you arrive in the cooler months, generally May to October. Three bedrooms sleep seven, in two queens, a double and a single daybed, with two bathrooms, all on one level, so there are no stairs to think about. It suits two couples, a family with older kids, or a small group of friends who want a quiet few days together. Make Yourself at Home The kitchen has what you need for proper meals, with a dishwasher and an Espressotoria coffee machine for the first cup of the morning. There's a smart TV, a Bluetooth speaker, Wi-Fi, ducted heating and air conditioning, and linen and laundry facilities are included. Outside is where Belini really shows itself. There's a covered outdoor lounge for lazy afternoons out of the sun or the drizzle, and a dining table out in the open, made for long lunches that turn into long dinners, with the BBQ close by. The garden is fully fenced, so children can play safely, and there's a croquet lawn for the competitive ones and shaded seats under the trees for everyone else. The Neighbourhood, Honestly From the end of Heyfield Road, a coastal track leads to Sixteenth Beach and Lizard Head Rock, about a 13-minute walk. These are wild ocean beaches, beautiful for walks, rock pools and sea air, but surf beaches rather than swimming beaches. For calm water, Rye's bay beach is a short drive. The Sixteenth Beach General Store is a 13-minute walk for coffee and supplies, and the Peninsula Hot Springs, several golf courses and horse riding at Gunnamatta are all close. You'll find more of our favourite coffee stops in our Best Coffee in Rye guide. Local Favourites Sixteenth Beach General Store A 13-minute walk from the gate, right across the road from the ocean beach. The shelves are stocked with fresh local produce, and the coffee is some of the best around. Take a seat outside at the caf, or grab a takeaway and carry it across to the sand. The Cups Estate The closest winery to the house, and our pick for a long, unhurried lunch. St Andrews Beach Brewery A short drive away, and a good reason to gather everyone for a long afternoon once the beach is done for the day. A Note for Dog Owners Belini doesn't take dogs. If yours is coming too, Capri House in nearby St Andrews Beach sleeps eight and has an 80% PAWSOME rating. Summer Here, Winter Here In summer, it's long lunches outside, croquet on the lawn in the late light, and a walk down the track to the beach before dinner. The summer school holidays book out early, so plan ahead. In winter, both fires are going, the firewood is waiting, and the walk to Lizard Head Rock is best done in a coat. The Peninsula Hot Springs is a short drive for an afternoon soak. Good to Know Belini doesn't take pets and isn't available for parties or events. There's a security camera at the front of the house, which records only when it detects motion, and a camera at the front door that doesn't record. There's room for three cars behind the gate. Short Stay Certificate No. STRA0286/22.
