Tight room, air conditioner leaked, beds not that comfortable

When we called from the Madrid Airport to inquire about the "shuttle" mentioned on their website, we were advised to find a cab and expect to pay about $50. But the real surprise was that they had changed our reservation to another property (which turned out to be in a better neighborhood and closer to the museums we came to see). Lucky we called! We were told the apartment was at #1 Santa Barbara, so we went by subway, $5 each, to a stop nearest the only Santa Barbara we could find, a Plaza: no # 1. A friendly passerby directed us to tiny Calle Santa Barbara not named on our tourist map from the airport, a ten-minute walk away. A very pleasant Brit, Mark, from Madrid Smart Rentals was waiting at the corner of the Calle Santabarbara and Calle de Fuencarral, a major pedestrian shopping and dining area. He quickly showed us what we needed to know. Great location, second floor (our third floor) by elevator; the only apartment at that level. Four wide floor-to-ceiling windows with roll-up shades and shutters overlooking the quiet street between Calle de Fuencarral and a delightful pedestrian plaza at the other end of the block (excellent bakery, to pizza places, other takeaways). No noise through the double-glazed windows, comfy double bed in bedroom with lots of closet space: in large main room a great convertible leather couch, big flat screen tv (but Spanish tv is dull, to us), clean and modern kitchen and sleek dining table and four chairs. Typically, inadequate reading light in living room and bedroom. We never used the dishwasher. Nifty bathroom with large shower. Combined washer/dryer. Plenty of places nearby for food and drink, takeaway or in place. A major metro station Tribunal is maybe 150 yards away, with easy access to three metro lines. But we walked to many major sites including the Prado and four other museums. Plenty of towels supplied, dishwasher soap and clothes washer soap. Salt, but no pepper or any other cooking supplies (oil). Adequate pots, pans, tableware, plates, glasses. We went for four nights and would have been happy to stay a lot longer. It seemed a very safe area to us, day and night. MadridSmartRentals office is nearby and Mark assured us there would be help in a hurry, if needed. We never need any. We are delighted to have stayed in this place.
