Hotel has lots of pros just few cons.staff was very helpful, clean rooms ,best breakfast, good location, peaceful environment, easy access to public transportations, nice view of city ,nice clean pools . Air conditioning was not working well,no WIFI in room so you have to go to lobby for internet access.hotel is bit old may be needed updates . But all over it was good experience. Everything was nice clean tidy and comfy. Will prefer to visit again .

The hotel, booked through Jet2Holidays was rated as 4 stars. This is not the case. Maybe about 10 years ago it warranted this rating but not any more. I would suggest a solid 2 stars maybe 3 at a push. The restaurant is fine with plenty of variety for the breakfast menu, but the evening meal seemed a little repetitive, although we did not try it. The pool area is small and limited. There is an indoor pool as well as an outdoor pool. Unfortunately, the outdoor pool is quite small and round. Possibly 20 feet across and not really suitable for small children. In fact, there is nowhere I would deem suitable for small children in either of the pool areas although TBF, we did not use the indoor pool as it had quite a strong smell of chlorine, and it was very warm inside. Which brings me to...... Air conditioning, or lack thereof. We were given a room on the 14 floor with a side sea view (as advertised). Unfortunately, with only the roof above us, the room temperature was a good 10-15% hotter than anywhere else in the hotel, including the indoor pool area. Opening the windows gave little relief as we were then subject to traffic noise from behind and in front of the hotel. The room could have been used as a punishment room for wayward holiday makers. The management confirmed the air con had not worked for some time and would not be repaired for at least a week. We were moved to another room which was significantly cooler with no traffic noise but with a lack of air conditioning, the nights were still a little muggy. On the plus side, the staff were very good. The restaurant staff worked tirelessly clearing tables and replenishing the wide range of breakfast foods, which were very good indeed. The cleaning staff were good and thorough and we had clean sheets and towels every day. Unfortunately, the hotel does not measure up to its 4star rating, however hard the staff work. And they do. My advice? There are many excellent hotels in the Funchal area boasting 4 and 5 stars. The Alto Lido isn't one of them although it tries very hard.

As the name says: A few meters above the rocky coast. Nice rooms from the 4th to 8th floor with sea view. Second and third floor: Noise and kitchen smells. Clean rooms, quite good service, delicious buffet. However, expect many hundred guests. During the meals it’s tight and loud - better take them early! Prompt service. Indoor pool, barren sun terrace on the third floor. Free shuttle bus to Funchals city center.

Spent 3 nights here in May 17. The hotel is clean and well presented. It has a very large bar which I think had live entertainment each night we were there (although we went out!). There is a pool but we did not use it, and a small gym, sauna and bizarrely a squash court. Breakfast was buffet style and fine. The hotel is fairly high up, so to get down to the coast although only a 5 minute walk it was very steep and/or lots of steps. This is very normal for the area. There are many restaurants, bars and cafes though that are on the same level as the hotel. The main part of Funchal is about 1.5 - 2 miles away. It's a pleasant walk.

Fancied a week away in the sun and chose Funchal at random. Glad we did as it is a nice resort with plenty of nice scenary and places to eat and drink well. The hotel is clean and comfortable. The staff are all friendly and only too happy to help you. Breakfast was everything you could want fron a fry up to healthy choices. Nice pool with nearby cafe. They'll bring your drinks to you. If you want a nice quiet week away by the sea, this place wiii see you right.

Just come back from Maderia, we had a studio apartment for a week. On arriving ( earlier than check in ,although had emailed them to say this would happen) the staff were very friendly and had already allocated us our apt and it was ready for us. The apt was spacious, kitchen had everything we needed ( we were self catering) including a cooker. It was clean and the staff came in on a regular basis to keep it so. We were in room 560 which had a view of the Sunbed area and also out to Sea. Although we didn't eat in the hotel , the restaurant always seemed very busy. Within walking distance there were a variety of eating places and we tried a different one each day and every meal was excellent, (granny's house does a lovely tuna dish) we would recommend this hotel. We did a couple of island tours with a company called pride of maderia which had small mini buses and the guides were excellent. Would certainly go again to this resort. We book d all our flights etc separately and used airport transfers to and from our hotel they too gave excellent service.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for seven nights. The hotel is fine, it's clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful. The other reviews of it being dated are true. We were not lucky enough to get a renovated room so our room was dated and plain. We did manage to get a 14th floor (top floor) room so our view of the ocean was lovely. They're a bit outside of the old downtown Funchal, but offer a free shuttle service. It's about s 30-40 walk to downtown. The breakfast buffet was included and was very good. There is no wifi in the rooms which I found annoying. There were restaurants around the hotel so you don't have to go downtown. Location was convenient and there is a café and a grocery store adjacent to the hotel. I tried to go to the pool, but it was far too cold for my liking! The only thing I would say is if you're used to the north American standard of four-star accommodation this hotel will not meet your expectations. This is definitely a three-star hotel at best. Overall this hotel would be an excellent choice for a budget minded traveller.

First a bit of background- We're a young-minded middle-aged couple who love to travel and are quite active when we do. When booking accommodation, we primarily look for good value in a well-located and comfortable facility, and we don't mind paying a little more to obtain those elements. While perhaps a bit dated; Hotel Alto Lido is well maintained; the rooms clean, comfortable and spacious; the location very good and the staff extremely helpful. The breakfast (which was included in the price) was well done with good variety. Our room had a nice balcony overlooking the street (Estrada Monumental) with a partial view of the Atlantic. The bed (2 twins pushed together) was comfortable. There was a kitchenette with refrigerator, cook top and kettle (although no food items or coffee/tea was provided). Bathroom was large and had a tub/shower combo rather than a separate shower which we would have preferred. The outdoor pool area was spotless and has a small bar for drinks and snacks. There is also an indoor pool. Public areas are large and clean. There is a small 'gift shop' in the lobby area; however, we were required to go to the pool bar on the 3rd floor landing to purchase soft drinks as it only sells dry goods and souvenirs. The 'Lido' area isn't the best if you are looking for good access to beaches and it is a fair distance to the city center; however, it is a nice area with a number of restaurants and bars nearby, as well as a supermarket and shopping mall within easy walking distance. Also, several bus stops close by for easy access to public transport. The only real negatives were the lack of 'wifi' in the room (it is available in public areas) and the fact that there are some additional charges for various items that would typically be included free at a 4 star hotel, such as a lock for the in room safe, use of spa, etc. Also, the hotel apparently did not have the room AC turned on while we were there. We solved this by leaving the balcony door open. And, to be fair, we did not enquire about the AC, so it may have been a correctable issue had we asked. In summary, we found the Alto Lido to be a very good value and would not hesitate to book there again, especially during the cooler months. However, if we return to Madeira during the Summer, we would likely elect to stay somewhere that has better access to a beach or is actually along the ocean front.

We have just returned ( end of March 2017 ) and can only say that the Hotel was good. Maybe a little dated but all clean. The bed was massive but the mattress unfortunately very lumpy. Meals were fine, and the waiters did refill items as they ran out apart from what we noticed at dinner it would seem that once the desserts had been served these did not get replaced apart from the fresh fruit salad. I would recommend going for meals a bit later rather than early as it does get crowded and very noisy. WiFi is only available in the downstairs Lobby and it would be a benefit to the Hotel if they had a Coffee - Wine Bar in the Lobby as many people do sit there checking their phones during the day. The staff all were friendly.Funchal Centre is about 40 minutes walk away where all the main tourist shops are. Come Together Restaurant across the road to the Hotel serves very good food. Lunch time snacks and evening meals - Beef on the Stone was excellent. Booking for table may be necessary as this is not a very large restaurant. All very friendly. We had a taxi take us up the mountain which I would recommend as he stopped at Fishing Village and 3 viewing stations with the 3rd having the one on glass. He was in no rush and happily let us out to walk around, as he was a local explain all things about the Island in very good English - This cost 60 Euros but well worth it.

It's the typical 80's 4* hotel in a island. The room had a small kitchen, with ironing kit and a terrace with a view to the swimming pool. The breakfast was average, fruits, coffee and bacon/beans/eggs. The typical guest are retired people so it was very calm. I've arrived late at night and the corridors recalled me 'the shining' movie a little bit. Note that the price was half of my first option (pestana grand) so if you don't expect any luxuries I think it's a fare value for money.
