We ate here on a Saturday night as this is one of the live music nights. We were greater with a glass of port and shown to our table that we had booked. We ordered a bottle of house red which was very good . For starters I had fish soup and the wife had soup of the day. For mains I had the local fish dish black scabbard with banana very good, and the wive chicken kebab very good. We were then given a glass of Madeira wine to Finnish off. During our meal we were entertained by the owner on the organ with his wife singing she was Scottish with a beautiful voice. A very good evening. Total cost 45 euro.
As the hotel is due to be shut for 4 months for refurbishing, my comments will not be valid. It was clean but very tired looking. We had a room on the 3rd. floor with a balcony overlooking the street. Originally it had a view of the sea, but with all the buildings it was blocked.
My husband and I recently returned from a 10 day stay at the Aldo Lido. We'd read a few bad reviews beforehand but were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. Although some of the furnishings needed updating the hotel was spotlessly clean and the rooms were serviced every day during our stay. Our room, 308 on the third floor, was huge and had a limited view of the sea. Apart from the sleeping area there was also a small sitting area consisting of a sofa, coffee table & tv and although we had booked half board we also had a small kitchen & dining area too. This was ideal for a quick sandwich at lunchtime but would also suit those on self catering too as it had a full size electric oven, two electric hobs, kettle & toaster. Food in the dining room was of good standard too. Breakfasts consisted of cereals, fruit, cheeses, cooked meats, eggs, bacon, beans, tomatoes etc. and there were usually crepes and croissants for those wanting a lighter breakfast. Evening meals had soups, salads, various types of meat dishes, fish and usually a pasta dish of some kind. There were usually several desserts on offer each evening too All meals were buffet style. The only slight criticism of the dining room service was that the staff were a bit slow at re-setting the tables with cutlery, glasses etc and occasionally we had to get our own. In fairness to them, though, they were extremely busy and always remained pleasant. The outdoor swimming pool is not very big but there were always enough sunbeds as I suspect that some guests used the lido further up the road, where there was a charge to go in but there were several pools and water slides etc for the children. There is free Wifi in the Reception area and the hotel itself is situated on the outskirts of Funchal but near to bars and restaurants. A taxi into Funchal costs 7 euros each way, although there is a cheap, frequent bus service. Also the hotel provides a courtesy bus which needs to be booked in advance. Overall, this was a clean, friendly, value for money hotel and the only reasons I gave it 4 stars was the fact that it could benefit from updating and the outdoor pool was small, although there is also an indoor pool, which looked nice.
So we've been home a week and all i keep thinking is i wish we were back in Madeira. Our first holiday in 8 years and i picked a the best place. Being in hospitality myself its hard to get time out for a break but im so glad we did. The staff were charming and worked their socks off, our housekeeper Marisa on tge 7th floor was lovely and greeted us every morning with her cheerful hello, our room Was lovely really spacious, bathroom spotless, bed was massive and perfectly made. The food was to die for with everything you can imagine for breakfast, the kitchen/dining room staff worked so hard. I manage a hotel and really can not find anything to criticise. I understand you are having a referb over the winter so i wish you all the luck in the world with that. I really really hope we are able to return one day to this great place. My 2 kids also loved the relaxed atmosphere and the barman with the funny laugh 😁 my you have many more successful years xx
Arrived early due to flight times but no problem. Had to wait a while for room to be ready but were directed to pleasant lawned pool area where there were plenty of sunbeds and a bar/ snacks bar. Our room looked over this pool area with a pleasant if slightly obstructed sea view. We had a reasonable sized double room with a small kitchenette to one side and a seating area leading to a nice balcony. The bed (two singles pushed together) was comfortable and clean. The bathroom though a little tired was clean and had lots of surfaces for cosmetics etc. The kitchen area contained a stainless steel work surface/fridge/2 rings and an oven. Adequate but seemed a little bit antiquated, plenty of cupboard space and I managed to cook a couple of evening meals in there without any trouble and there was a table and chairs In there where we ate breakfast every day. The rest of the room was nicely decorated and there was a large TV that you could watch either from the settee or the bed. TV had unusually several English speaking channels. The public areas of the building were for the most part clean and tidy if underused. The very large reception area could have been made a lot more user friendly with the addition of a coffee shop or some such to obtain drinks from when the bar (also very large) was shut - most of the day. The nearest grocery store is just down the road about 100 metres and is well stocked and surprisingly reasonable prices. Lots of nice bars and restaurants also in the area. The hotel does offer transport into the centre of Funchal and back but only 4 times a day. There is however a very regular bus service into the city for a couple of euros pp each way that is far more conveniet
On arrival, my friend and I were greeted by a lovely receptionist who explained where our room was and what time breakfast would be served in the morning etc. We were located on the very top floor so had a lovely view from the balcony and, considering there are only two lifts, we didn’t find it too much of a struggle. We stayed bed and breakfast and I couldn’t fault the quality of the food we ate. Plenty of selection and the fresh fruit on offer was a nice alternative to a cooked breakfast. The pool was always nice and quiet and there were plenty of sun loungers although we stayed at the beginning of September so I don’t know if there would be a bit of a fight for them in the peak months! Happy hour at the pool bar was a bargain really so we made the most of that on a few occasions. The room itself was fine – definitely big enough for just two of us – always clean as well as the bathroom. The only downside was the lack of plug sockets – particularly by the beds and the mirrors so that made it slightly difficult when trying to get ready! The hotel location was perfect really; close enough to plenty of restaurants whether along the main road or down by the seafront. The hotel provides a shuttle bus into the centre of Funchal – we didn’t actually use this as we just ended up walking but thought it was a nice idea for those who might struggle to walk that far.
Location is great. Located at Lido, about 2kms from Funchal. Here you can rest and use the kitchenette if you like. You can ask to park you car if you pay 6€ per day and the hotel has also 2 swimming pools. One on the outside and one inside. Employees were helpful and kind and cleaning ladies come every day. We had breakfast already included in the price and it was acceptable, with a good variety of dishes.
I am writing this sitting by the pool at Alto Lido . I am always surprised by comments on trip adviser ---- I don't know what people want for the price they pay . Yes , it is a little outdated but it is having a complete overhaul next year ( and will cost more no doubt) What do people want for breakfast ? There is surely something for everyone - most breakfasts are same . The rooms are large and air con . good . My husband asked for his mattress to be changed as it had certainly seen better days . His request was carried out immediately . Staff are lovely and rooms kept clean .Bedding and towels changed regularly. Hotel in an ideal location with restaurants nearby and a free shuttle bus into Funchal twice a day . We do have one major moan ------- the sun beds will cripple you ! They have certainly had their day and you can see the dips and feel the springs - very uncomfortable . I'm sure they will be replaced . Towels are available for a deposit refunded on return . There I've sat through happy hour at the pool and I,ve still got10 days left
Having booked Alto Lido on the hop through Jet2 despite reading some of the reviews, we were rather apprehensive about what we might find. Firstly, the air con DID work during our stay, yes it was a little noisy, but ear plugs meant that this wasn't a problem! The rooms were cleaned daily and towels changed. The rooms are reasonably spacious and there is a mini fridge in the room. In truth, yes, the decor is a little dated and could do with a freshen up, BUT, they are clean and far less basic than what you would expect if you travelled to other countries, e.g. Greece. We stayed b&b, the breakfast was varied with a wide variety of rolls/bread, cakes,3 cereals, pancakes, fresh fruit which varied from day to day, 3 types of yogurt, 4 types of egg, continental and fried meats so I really don't know what some have complained about here!! They also kept this replenished up until closing. The location of the hotel for us was just great, we walked miles during our stay, however, there is a good selection of restaurants and a few bars within easy walking distance and on the flat. There is a small coffee shop which serves drinks and sells a huge selection of wine/spirits close by (bottle store) where the staff are friendly and prices very reasonable. Prices for drinks in the hotel are pricier than in many of the bars/cafes, however, during happy hour, they are good value. I should also mention that there are plenty of sunbeds - by the outdoor pool, inside next to the indoor pool and on 2 other sundecks (floor 5 and floor 3) It was busy whilst we were there, but there were always plenty of beds to be had! Bonus! Overall, we had an excellent stay, thank you Alto Lido!
I spent an excellent time in Alto Lido Hotel ! I always felt in security whereas I travelled alone, and that I had never travelled before. People working there are really welcoming and very available when I had any question. I never felt lost, thanks to Alto Lido Hotel ! The hotel is very confortable and clean. The view of my room was magic, whereas it was written "partiel view on the sea" ! It was such a good stay that I have offered the same for my parents for next september and I am in hurry that they enjoy there !
