I noted that most of the "terrible" reviews were posted quite a while ago, and based on that, I assume there was a revamp of this hotel and the service, as I found it very acceptable. At these prices, you will not get 4 or 5-star amenities or service, but for a 3-night stay, everything was as advertised. The breakfast is decent, the room and bathroom are very compact but is clean and has what it needs, the service is adequate and polite. The wifi works, the shower has a decent supply of hot water. And, above all, the location is excellent! I will most definitely stay here again. at these prices, one can do much worse in London!
Location is very good, near paddington station and surrounding with lots of restaurant. unfortunately there is no elevator provided. Get ready to bring your luggage if they have no slot in first floor. Breakfast is ok conparable with price.
Great location, close to Paddington station. Friendly welcome, then 71 steps to the bedroom. Tiny single room on 4th floor. Bed had a sheet and a thin bedspread with duvet (no cover) in the corner of the room. Lovely modern bathroom but water kept stopping - having shampooed my hair the shower stopped for two minutes. I could hear the TV from the room next door. Breakfast was interesting - fresh fruit, yogurts, cereals, juice, toast, pastries, baked beans, hot dog sausages, bologna sausage, hash browns, toasted sandwiches, tea and coffee - then 84 steps back to room.
we stayed with a groupon voucher, & reading your reviews I was a bit worried what we would be allocated. We asked for a room with a balcony & said we would pay the upgrade, unfortunately they had been allocated. But we were offered a newly painted room with a new modern clean bathroom, it was on the top floor with 54 stairs but we are in our mid fifties and managed ok. He offered us 2 rooms we took the one at the front overlooking other beautiful Georgian houses/hotels. Sussex Gardens is literally 5mins from Paddington main station & tube. Transport links are fab. Free Wifi in the room. Essom checked a few things out on our behalf, the day we were leaving he also let us leave our bags free of charge until later so we could enjoy the last 5 hours in London. I would definitely stay here again. we were in room 34, in the same building as the reception.
We had a two night stay with a groupon, our first room was very small with the double bed against the wall. The floor was not clean with hair remaining from the last guests in the sink. This room was more suited for a single person not a couple, it should have had a single bed in it not a double. We did ask to be moved for the second night which the reception staff organised for us, this room was much better and cleaner, with room to walk around the bed. Breakfast was poor, fruit brown round the edges, beans cold, coffee was poor, we had no welcome by the breakfast staff or an explanation about the procedure for breakfast, we were just left to it to help ourselves. The staff on reception were helpful and stored our suitcase on the first day so we could go off site seeing and organised our change of room. The hotel would not be suitable for people with mobility issues as there was no lift and the carpet on some of the stairs was threadbare and dangerous. Will not use this hotel again. Hotel is a short walk from Paddington station.
Having been there for weeks booking 2 or 3 rooms per week no customer service, like how many rooms would you need next week just take as much money as possible. Two nights no towels, another night one towel which was left on the floor to change was hung back up. Every morning no night porter but could see his feet sticking out behind reception asleep.
Hotel very clean. Only one towel for each of us. Good spot for London sightseeing. Negative we had the top floor 71 stairs to get up there. I had to have a break mid climb. Breakfast was in the basement so 84 stairs down in total. Basic breakfast hot dog sausages and toast and beans/ cold meats. Would have been nice if juices and yoghurts were chilled. Not one I would stay at again but probably ok value for money for London
Stayed for one night with a Groupon voucher and really impressed - exceptionally clean and great location and very friendly staff. Excellent breakfast and will definitely stay again. Room small but beautifully refurbished and as it was was it was on the top floor there were a lot of stairs but very quiet and a great night's sleep. No complaints!
A great location and not far from the main attractions, I stayed here for 3 nights with my partner on a short mid week break. The hotel is clean and tidy. Our room was on the first floor. It was clean and warm but very small and the toilet / shower room even smaller. We got woken up on the second night by the sound of dripping and investigating we discovered a big damp patch on the wall above our shower room and water dripping down onto the roof of said room. I went down stairs to report it and the receptionist made a note and said it should stop in a few minutes and he would get the maintenance man to sort it out. He said the room above ours, the guest's enjoyed their shower a bit too much. The stairs were quite steep, especially going down to the breakfast room and the rooms in the basement. Breakfast is served from 7.30am - 9am and there is a good selection to suit all tastes. The fellow guests all said hello in the mornings and so did the staff that we saw. Our room was kept tidy during our stay.
Upon checking in we noted a sign on their boiler saying that it wasn't working. We asked the receptionist if it impacted on our hot water supply. They said it was cause us no problems. Well it did, we never had hot water for the duration of our stay. When we pointed out there being no hot water they said it was okay it will be fixed tomorrow. Tomorrow? You mean after we've checked out? How is that supposed to help. They seemed entirely bemused at how a lack of not water might be an issue. Further issues included a generally poor level of cleanliness, pokey rooms and less than helpful staff. Emailed the manager three times, tried phoning, have left messages but not heard anything back. Dreadful place, easily the worst hotel I've ever stayed in.
