Unexpected stay due to a flight delay. Check in took ages. Given a meal voucher but needed a boarding pass to get to the restaurants and as I didn't have one the reception offered to pickup my meal if I ordered it as I checked in, which I did. Three phone calls back to reception and more than 90 minutes later I was told I should collect the meal which was stone cold when I got it! There was no hot water in the room and after two international flights I was not impressed!
Nice modern hotel and friendly staff that take stress out of lengthy long haul travel. Breakfast was served with variety of food options and the the convenience of flight information provided so that you do not miss your flight, and the best thing is that you don’t even have to leave the airport! So no hassle of getting transport or fear of been a victim of notorious JHB crime.
This is the hotel I used on two brief, overnight stops in Johannesburg. The shuttle runs every half hour from a the shuttle meeting point directly behind the Hotel Intercontinental. It is a five minute ride to the hotel, no charge. The security personnel at the shuttle point emphasize the need to remain in the station for our protection. The hotel is a business/transit hotel. There are neat architectural touches and design features but it is still located on a freeway at an airport so there will be some noise. Rooms are spacious and clean with comfortable showers. There is a large parking lot. Guests are discouraged from walking off the hotel property so it is sleep and leave. Prices are reasonable. As I was checking out I decided to book a room for a few weeks in the future. I was charged an extra 100 Rand because I did it in person rather than going on line. The person at the front desk walked 30 feet down a hall to speak with the booking department, the same as I would have done if I had booked on line. There was no give or budge, the extra charge stood unless I had taken out my phone and booked on line.
We've stayed at the hotel on our way to Mauritius, and back. First night, the air conditioning didn't work and kept making horrible noise every 10 min or so,in attempt to turn on, waking up everyone. On our way back, tap was leaking, and we didn't have hot water AT ALL. And, believe me, icy cold shower in South African winter is NOT great. My advise to everyone - save your time and money and go out of the airport, we never had problems with Protea before, but this one is a disgrace.
The hotel was very close to the airport and as a result was superb not only for business meetings but also a great hotel as we had travelled from the UK on airway to Madagascar. The rooms were more than adequate and the food was very good and largely the service was also very good.
The transit hotel is conveniently located adjacent to the security and passport screening areas for transit passengers so it's literally on the way for those passing through the airport to/from international destinations. The front desk was efficient and polite. The room was spacious and nicely furnished. Room was adequately quiet. WiFi enrollment was a bit of a hassle.
Just wanted to alert the public that this Hotel cannot be accessed if you do not have an international ticket and passport. I made the mistake of booking this hotel for a domestic stay and was left stranded for accommodation.
I used it to rest my eyes after a long overnight flight. The room is basic and appropriately priced with a comfortable bed and all you need for a sleepover. The hotel could do with adding a refresh pack to the room and actually honour wake up call requests.
I used this hotel so I didn't have to get a visa for South Africa. The hotel is in the airport and really easy to find and well signed. Hotel is tidy and all you need after a long flight. Bed was comfy and and shower was good. Really convenient. Staff were friendly as well and helpful.
I stayed at the hotel for one night arriving from the U.S. and continuing the next morning to another country in Africa. It is convenient that you do not need to exit the airport, especially if you arrive late at night and have a short layover. The hotel does not offer any amenities: no food, drinks, pool or a gym, but it is priced accordingly. You can take the elevator and eat and shop at the terminal. The room is small and dark, there is no view. I asked the receptionist for a converter to charge my phone, but she said that she ran out of them. There was no water in the room so I went to the terminal to buy water. I stayed in a building that was not where the reception is and I felt a bit uncomfortable because there was an empty reception desk and it looked like any person can enter that floor from the terminal, as a female guest it does not make you feel especially safe. I was told not to pick up my luggage because it will go directly to my final destination. The luggage arrived 5 days later and for this reason I would prefer to pick up my luggage and not stay at this hotel. I would stay there only if I had a very short layover and did not want to deal with the luggage, but then you take the risk of not getting the luggage on time.
