Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Parktonian All-Suite4.0 out of 5.0

We spent 2 days in Johannesburg. When we booked the hotel it seemed like a nice, central location. The hotel is nice, clean, very nice staff, but the area is not very nice. The flats in the area look like tenement buildings...poor repair.; many with broken windows; many look like the should be condemned. The Salvation Army has a housing building next door. It is definitely not safe to walk outside at night and not really safe during the day. Be cautious.
I needed a central hotel in Johannesburg for access to the train station in the morning, and was a touch concerned about security. The Parktonian was well located (geographically), but the centre of this city is not for the faint of heart. It is a dystopian world; the security folks advised me not to go out in the afternoon, at least if I were carrying anything, and fo sure, not to venture along after dark. They offer a shuttle to nearby businesses, and the train station was deemed too insecure for me to walk the five minutes. Fair enough, the city is rough. The hotel is actually pretty good; it is friendly, work out a little, and the restaurant buffet is ample but feels tired. It needs a haircut, and perhaps my griping has more to do with the fact that Protea Hotels now lie under the Marriott brand, and this ain't no Marriott.
I was looking for a clean safe accommodation in the city center and the protea hotel was a very good choice. The hotel is affordable, clean, safe hotel in the Johannesburg. City center. Walking distance from everywhere.
The staff is outstanding. We met Mokowe from sales when we were at the top floor enjoying the view. He was working with people at a group function but went out of his way to help us - not members of the group - find a dinner venue and transportation to it. He recommended a wonderful place in Sandton. Then Tshepang (?) drove us to and from our dinner. Both really showed the true SA spirit of kindness and friendliness. Although I am an elite Marriott member and were booked on the 22nd floor, we needed twin beds a which I did not request in advance - and none were available so we were on the 7th floor. The bathroom had been remodeled, and the room was clean, but the room furnishings were very old and dreary. The area is a bit rough, but it was more interesting to us than the more suburban Sandton area.
I needed a hotel close to the UJ main campus for myself and a colleague and this fit the bill - not too far away, reasonable rates and decent reviews. The hotel staff were top notch - friendly, efficient and helpful. I got a faulty wi-fi code, but kept forgetting to ask for a new one - so my issue. My colleague had no issues with the wi-fi and was happy with it. We were on the 17th floor - rooms are renovated and are clean and comfortable. Even with the renovation, they do feel a bit "eighties" - but that is more likely the shape and type of space (the building was erected in 1937 after all). We did not eat at the hotel - we wanted to try places in the area (will write separate reviews) all of which were excellent. Would gladly stay here again.
This hotel is all suite style.a bit outdated .but good service .the TV is so small only in living room no tv in bedroom. Just like apartment type .I like the rooftop swimming pool and 360 degree view n also gym with panoramic view too .
Our stay at this hotel was very pleasant. Our room was huge with a living area as well. Everyone at the hotel was very nice from the waitress at the restaurant, to the waiters at the bar & also the reception desk as well. Only downfall is the area that it's in. We actually walked to the store the 2nd day we got there & we were a little frightened, & we're African American, LoL. We took Uber's to other locations to hang out that were much safer. Other than that , this hotel wasn't bad at all. The price is very good as well for the size of the room we had & the roof top is beautiful.
Protea offered very nice experience and as I happened to have a room from the highest (23rd) level, the view over Joburg was phenomenal. Room quality including bathroom was excellent and overall tidiness very good. Room service worked nicely and the free wi-fi had good connectivity. Small downsides include lack of minibar as well as in-room ironing opportunity (they do offer ironing room but the board there was minimal and not really very usable). Hotel offers parking in the next door parking house so it is very convenient even if you drive yourself. Good choice!
This hotel is in the Johannesburg CBD and most probably one of the in the area for inner city areas which seem to be neglected in many countries. Some of the rooms have been renovated recently but not entirely so you will for example find newly renovated bathrooms but the window frames are very old and outdated metal ones, etc. Only one lift (maybe two at most) worked when I was there for all guests and staff on 24 floors so it was a real pain. At night you should stay in the hotel and not venture outside unless you are really adventurous. The rooms on level 23 are really spacious with your own kitchenette and lounge area. The view at night is spectacular looking out over the city lights. The downstairs reception and eating areas are very nice. Parking is convenient and a skywalk links the parking area with the hotel so it is safe and convenient. TV channels are very limited and a bigger variety should be provided for this standard of hotel. WIFI was very poor in my room. Staff are really great and the stars of the show at this hotel.
Ive stayed in this hotel 3 times over the last 10 years. It never seems to change . The rooms are large and clean . But very basic No furniture on the balconies etc . I would say its biggest let down is the bar . There was a group of 14 of us and they insist on shutting the bar at 23.00 you can only get drinks from a night porter . We waited 20 minutes to get drinks. They often run out of stock . I would say this is the worst hotel bar I've Been in. I would expect much better service in a 4 star hotel
