Excellent food and accommodation, especially if you're into art. A mix of the old and new perfectly done. Peaceful as well as a pleasant atmosphere. The staff here is fantastic and always have a smile. Well done to Susan and staff. Thank you. ❤️❤️❤️

Our stay was in winter and there was an oil heater in the room which kept us toasty warm in the evening and early morning. We felt that the attention to detail could have been better. The staff were very helpful and friendly. There is good secure parking and generally the security is excellent. The location was very convenient for the places we needed to visit.

Words cannot describe how fantastic the gooseberry guesthouse truly is! After a long journey we got to our rooms which were absolutely spotless and full of little touches as well as the heater being left on which was perfect for being so late at night! The beds are so comfy and bathrooms huge! In the morning we were greeted by a member of staff that explained to help ourselves to the buffet and that breakfast would be served soon. When it arrived it was lovely and filling! The garden and drawing room are gorgeous and perfect to relax in. The staff couldn't be more helpful and the cleanliness of the guesthouse was outstanding. Each morning the staff would ask us how we were with a genuine interest not just because it's what they have asked to do, nothing was too much bother. On the Friday night we had a power cut (which is normal in SA) and as soon as we walked in a member of staff came to see us with candles and check if we were OK. Although there was more guest arriving the day we checking out we were allowed an extra hour after check out as it had been my brothers wedding the night before which we were so gracious for. It's these little things that make all the difference, it was the first time I've been to SA and guaranteed I will stay here every time I visit Joburgh!

The Gooseberry Guesthouse is a beautiful oasis of tranquility in the metropole of Joburg! The staff is lovely and very helpful. The rooms are so beautiful and lovely decorated! The garden with colourful walls and flowers is beautiful and there is a lot to discover (try to find the hidden swing ;-)). It is a perfect spot to get well rested and relaxed after a long flight or before a big city-trip.

Such a lovely guesthouse in a nice neighbourhood. Welcoming friendly staff. Rooms were clean and neat with beautiful antique furniture and garden views. Breakfast was delicious. Plenty of parking. Definitely value for money and I would recommend it to anyone for business or leisure.

I stayed in Room 3, and it is wonderful to see the redecoration going on. The staff have been super friendly and absolutely fantastic. The guesthouse had beautifully artistic finishes and looks, and the food has been amazing! Really can't say enough good things about Gooseberry! We were made to feel welcome and at home the minute we walked it. We were helped with our bags and our every request was promptly and professionally addressed. Well done everyone at Gooseberry, I will be staying here every time in Joburg and can highly recommend it to everyone who wants a peaceful stay in Joburg

With a week long trip away from my family, Gooseberry had made my stay warm and comfortable. With friendly staff and management and probably a better bed and duvet then my own, I have definitely enjoyed my stay. Now I'm actually looking forward to coming back to Johannesburg, because now I know I have a home away from home.

Gooseberrry Guesthouse itself is beautiful, but it doesn't make up for poor service and staff having a "everything is a problem attitude." From the moment we arrived every request made, was a problem. We asked for assistance with our luggage and after a sigh and telling us there is nobody to assist us, the staff member found someone who could assist with our luggage. The next day I requested a hair-dryer, but found nothing in my room when returning the evening. When I asked again, my colleague said she found a hair-dryer in her room. Really! To make things more interesting, my colleague's bath plug went missing the following day. And so the story went on. On the day of our departure, we again requested assistance with our luggage, and again we were told there is nobody to assist. We really needed to leave and I asked one of the other male guests to assist us. I am not sure how this guesthouse got a four star rating.

To the Owner and Staff of 5th Avenue Gooseberry Guest House our utmost thanks and appreciation for you friendliness and making our stay absolutely remarkable Our family of 4 stayed there last week for a breakaway and felt as if we were in our own home. The hospitality was great, breakfast was almost signature dishes and Filter Coffee was brewed to perfection

Not impressed at all. Could not find two of the four stars. Mildew in shower, bathroom tiles had brown splatter near toilet, bathroom fittings missing and falling of the walls, curtains not fitting windows, no aircon, horrible coffee in the mornings. Good thing I did not have to be there for long!
