Van der Valk Hotel Haarlem

A nice hotel just a little outside the centre of Haarlem, about a 30 minute walk. The hotel is currently being re-modeled which made finding the entrance a little unclear. Even once you find the entrance the reception is on an upper floor which is a little strange. The bar and restaurant area both looked in the original part of the hotel are very clean but could do with a little refreshing. My room was in what looked like a new part of the hotel, it was spacious, modern furnishings and very clean. On the downside the air conditioning was next to pointless, I only knew it was working due to the noise it was making. My other gripe was the room balcony, there were no barriers between the rooms, this resulted in people walking past your room giving you no privacy whatsoever. For a business stay the hotel was great, however I would be disappointed if staying there for a vacation.

Let me start out by saying the hotelroom we had was very good. Spacious, nice bathroom and comfortable bed. In many ways what I am used to by this chain hotel. We stayed in a comfort room on the 4th floor for 3 nights. This hotel is undergoing renovations and this room was in the new wing of the hotel. The old building is where the reception, restaurant and bar is. The bar is small, dated and doesn't look very welcoming. I have no doubt the bar will be upgraded in the renovation. They also have a lounge area on the bridge between the 2 buildings. This seems quite new and you can order drinks using a pushbutton on the table. We were at the hotel for 3 nights, and all 3 nights when we pushed the button, no one showed up. The last night we complained about this and it turned out the system doesn't work very well. The restaurant is somewhat small and during breakfast time it can feel like a crowded birdcage. They open up the restaurant partially during breakfast time and only when they run out of tables they open the rest. I think this is a mistake and they should open the whole restaurant for breakfast. This will create a more relaxed atmosphere instead of seating everyone so close together. This hotel is also catering for large tourgroups (first morning the place was filled with indians, 2nd morning spanish youngsters). The tours seems to start at 9am because by 9am everyone was gone. Breakfast itself was very good and the buffet is well maintained. We had dinner twice in the restaurant but the food lacked a little bit of imagination compared to the other Valk restaurants where do they more with locally produced foods.

From the reception itself you are pampered. smart staff crisp service. rooms are really big. you get the feeling of space, something rare to come by in Europe. room service is again prompt. breakfast spread is the best part of the deal. you will be really surprised to see the variety. on top of that wi fi, gym etc. which you can freely use to remain intouch with your girl friend.

At this moment the hotel is under construction. The rooms have already been refurbished (beautiful, large rooms), but the reception and breakfast area is still like you visit a hotel in the 80's. Old and ugly. So, I would not recommend the hotel at this moment unless you could get a large discount.

We arrived at a building site disabled access was non existent. The booking said balcony. Although I had a walking stick we were put in the furthest room from the hotel reception which although lovely ( the comfort plus) there was clearly no balcony too tired and after struggling to reach the room we decided not to complain. The door lock was faulty missing a screw and as I soon found out very sharp sticking out 5 cm from the door. very tired we went to bed in the middle of the night I realised the bed had no sheets and we were sleeping on the mattress protectors. When I complained on check out the staff were completely uninterested and so was the manager when i posted on their site. I was expecting so much more from such a chain of hotels .

This hotel was a large modern hotel with rooms to match. They had a white and purple color scheme with a quote written on the wall behind the bed. The rooms were very clean with a large bathroom. There was a kettle with tea and coffee available which is unusual in European hotels. The food was very good quality in the restaurant. The conference facilities were also very good and the staff were really helpful setting up sound system and microphones. There were also two smaller rooms that were a perfect size for break out sessions. Easy location to get to from Schipol airport so good for business meetings.

Excellent place to stay, rooms are to a high quality spec, spacious and clean, i had a top floor twin room with balcony which was quite big, garden bench to sit on and enjoy the sunset because that's all i had time for after work, the restaurant is of a high quality than I'm used to, so ordering food was more of a roll of the dice, but seeing as the company paid for it i indulged in some fine dining for once, also not too expensive if you're paying. The staff were very helpful and curtious at all times even when i misplaced my room key. The hotel is situated in a nice neighbourhood with a short walk to the town centre and transport links within a few minutes of hotel grounds, it also has a gym and sauna but unfortunately due to working long hours i didn't get to try it 😕 would've been nice after a 15 hour shift but hey ho. Haarlem has enough to offer for a short stay rather than heading into Amsterdam centre if you've already seen all the sites there and you certainly get far more for your money!

Hotel was a little hard to find even when right in front of it. Entrance was up lots of stairs or drive up that looked like a service entrance. Once in, it was s great place to stay. Location near city center, easily walkable or right on bus line. Also a short drive to several places including The Keukenhof Gardens. Room was large and quiet. Minimal decor but very comfortable. There were several nice places to sit in the lobby area and lounge. But best of all was the food! Every meal was amazing! There was anything you could ever want for breakfast. And dinners were wonderful. The dining room was large, comfortable, and attractive. I would definitely stay here again.

We stayed here for a week during a trip to see the tulips in bloom. Great staff. Very nice room. We paid for an upgraded room in the remodeled section. Paid an "up charge" of 25 euros per night. Got a large spacious room. It had two comfortable easy chairs which were great for reading! No personal input on the standard rooms but heard no complaints from other members of our group.

As a bargain hotel, this place rocks! It is exceptionally clean, the staff are friendly and attentive, and it's a mere 17 minute drive from the airport (with free parking) and a mere 15 minute walk from the center of Haarlem (which is a small, beautiful city, with a lot to see: I highly recommend the Frans Hals Museum). This is not the place for a view of wind-mills or Old World Dutch Charm, but it is an excellent choice for hassle-free, comfortable lodging.
