The rooms are GREAT, big and newly renovated! We came late at night because of some airplain-trouble. The fact that the hotel looks so good on the outside and inside gives you certain expectations, Like a 24\7 room-service menu, or the oportunety to buy drinks or food, but NO. We had to order in some Turkish food, that came on a moped. Great Turkish food, but I think a hotel at this standard should offer something to their guests, even though its late??? We stayed here during a stormy night, and we slept with a open door to the outside. Fresh air, totaly quiet and very nice. A night to remember.
Grumpy staff at bar and breakfast, economy room is totally outdated and very hot (no airco or possibility to open a window), facing a busy road (noisy). No kingsize beds available, only in suites. Breakfast: only juice from concentrate, dry scrambled eggs. Dirty tablecloths.
Difficult for me to rate properly as I came here as a "stranded passenger" so i am not a paying customer. Its a nice, spacious hotel with pleasant staff and a relaxed atmosphere. It was slightly difficult ordering drinks at the bar last night and I had to keep going to find the barman every time I had finished my 330ml of beer, the only measure they seemed to serve. In the restaurant I was charged €3 but only €2,75 in the bar. I don't know how much it costs or whether there are currently reductions due to the building works going on, if not then that would be slightly disappointing. My room (403) was very nice, clean and spacious although the cleaning people woke me up at 9am by knocking on all the doors and announcing their arrival, even entering my room while I was "de-robed" so I would not recommend this place for anyone who likes a lie in. Still a very good hotel with high standard of English speakers.
Between March and May 2016 we stayed at the hotel on five occasions. We chose this hotel originally because it was close to Haarlem Hospital, and on a direct bus route from Shipol Airport. Rooms were top quality as was the whole environment of the hotel. The food was excellent with plenty of choice. The staff were so friendly, helpful and understanding on all our visits. We can only give the hotel and staff our highest recommendation.
Just got back from a four night stay. The hotel is in a great place, bus stop right outside. Rooms are lovely and clean. I'm not keen on the fact that the balconies are all one. This meant that anyone in any of the rooms whose balcony was joined on to ours could look into our room etc if they wanted. The hotel is having a major refurbishment but the building work didn't effect us. WiFi is the best we've had in any hotel. The first night we couldn't find the hotel because its actually called 'Hotel Haarlem'. Just look for the giant tucan on the roof.
Last base on our European road trip and it excelled on all levels! Room: Had a superior double in the new wing of the hotel - large, well decorated and comfortable room - large bathroom with separate toilet. Large bed with amazing pillows with TV at the end - not something we'd usually go for, but a novelty. Tea / coffee making facilities, although would have preferred actual cups/mugs to the paper cups provided. Breakfast: Large buffet style breakfast area with a vast array of different cereals, breads, hot / cold food and drinks - spoilt for choice and always left feeling stuffed. Haarlem: Hotel very well located to Haarlem centre - we biked in to access town / railway station. Lovely town surrounded by canal, town square with plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from. Trains ran frequently to Amsterdam (£17 return x 2) and was definitely the better option to staying in the city.
We arrived at the reception to find a building site and hotel front closed only with some paper wall. We were told our room is in the old part where the construction is going on. We were offered upgrade in the new part for 25eur per night. We were not informed about the construction and I didn't find it fair that we have to pay 25eur extra just to be able to stay away from the construction site. Still we agreed. Next thing at check in, after calculating the new price, I did a rough calculation and told the reception guy that the new price doesn't add up (he charged us 80eur more). We only cleared this out at check out when they decided to double charge us for the restaurant bill that we already paid for at the restaurant. So with the previous misscalculation, they tried to overcharge us 140eur. We spent one hour at reception to clear this up, no apology, no sorry, if we didn't reacted to their miscalculation they would have charged us extra 140eur. Did we get something for the one hour of standing at reception and the frustration while they were trying to figure out why we are complaining? No, not even sorry, it was almost as we were the bad clients for not accepting their calculation. At the end we got the price we were suppose to pay and and very bad impression of the service level of the hotel. Bad service level. The new rooms are nice and spacious, and breakfast is ok, nothing special and exactly the same every day. Sheets were not changed for five days, even with chocolate stain on them, they left them dirty on the bed. We are frequent travelers and even in non EU country we had better service.
When we checked in we were told that a part of the hotel was being refurbished and that for an extra 25 Euro we could get a renovated room. We decided to keep the room we had prepaid and were offered a drink for the inconvenience. We soon realised that the air-con in our room was not working and we informed the desk that told us that if we wanted AC we had to go the refurbished part and pay for it. We explained it was not our fault if their AC was out of order and consequently we didn't have to pay, They first refused until I said I would spend the night in the lobby that was cooler in that case. Then they gave us a renovated room with extra fee. The new rooms are very spacious and agreeable. The parking lot if free and always available It takes 20min to go to historic Haarlem on foot but you can take the bus. The restaurant is good.
We chose this hotel mainly because of it's car park! Haarlem centre hotels don't offer free parking. Of course, we were influenced by other reviews of the hotel facilities but parking and bike storage were priorities for the break we had planned. First off, the hotel is about about 2 km from the Grote Market: a twenty minute walk, five minute bike ride or even less on the 300 service bus which stops immediately outside the hotel. We took our own bikes (although you can get rentals from Reception) and stored them in a secure, dedicated room on the Ground Floor. Using the hotel as a base, we were able to cycle various tourist spots in the area without having to expand much energy - Holland is cycling Nirvana for those of us with arthritic and/or ersatz knee joints. The Comfort Room Plus that we were allocated at the hotel was terrific - one of the best we've had in Europe (for the price). The beds were comfortable, the bathroom facilities superior and the walk-in closet inspired: why don't more hotels provide a space to store all of you luggage, valuables, clothes and other clutter which normally lies on the floor as a potential trip hazard? The staff at Reception were helpful; the breakfast choice was comprehensive; the dinner menu was limited (though high quality) and the public areas were airy and welcoming. At the time of writing, do not rent an Economy Room in the main building - refurbishment work is intrusive and noisy. Overall: would certainly visit again.
Have stayed at this hotel for almost 30 years when in Haarlem and this year was no different. The location is great and the city centre is within walking distance. A bus that will take you to the departure hall at Amsterdam Schiphol airport stops in front so it is convenient when traveling without a car. The rooms in the original building were renovated a few years ago and are quite large, with all the expected amenities including airco. Wifi is free and there is even wired internet in the room (use the connector next to where the telephone plugs in). The newer part of the hotel, where the reception is located, is undergoing renovations right now. When booking a room specify that you want to be in the already renovated building, on the west side overlooking the large parking lot. That way you do not have the sun in the room in the summer when the sun comes up really early. The sun sets late in the summer at about 10:30 PM. There is a wide balcony running along the entire side of the building with a bench for each room. Nice to sit out in the morning. The room also offers a new Nespresso machine and a kettle to boil water for tea. Two free tea bags and 2 free Nespresso coffee capsules are provided each day. The room features a free safe of reasonable size but it will not accommodate a laptop. Highly recommend this hotel.
