The ideal base for a couple of days exploring this fascinating town and getting to understand its history. Built in the 1970s as part of the Portuguese Pousadas chain, the hotel is now in private family ownership and this very much contributed to the extremely welcoming and friendly attitude of every member of staff that we met. Although we were in the company of only a few other guests for our stay in the second week of October, the service at breakfast and in the restaurant was excellent. We were very impressed with the range of home-produced foods on offer at breakfast, and the evident pride that the staff took in offering this. The hotel is at the higher part of the town within the fortifications and only a short way away from the town museum and the site of the former castle. We had a really good view over the roofs of the houses in the town and the countryside and fortifications beyond. Definitely to be recommended.
Arrived at end of a long day in the saddle. Cobbled ramp up to the Hotel, just within the spectacular city walls. Spacious rooms, corridors and public areas, cool and tranquil. Evening meal was good as was breakfast. We found people in Portugal very friendly throughout and this Hotel's staff were no exception. Almeida seems very remote, very different scenery and it would have been nice to spend more time exploring the fortifications, definitely not a main stream holiday destination, and all the better for that !
We found the people in Almeida to be uniformly unfriendly and inhospitable. After two weeks in Portugal it was the first place where we encountered a distinct lack of charm. The exception was the Fortaleza de Almeida, where the staff were courteous, welcoming and helpful. If you decide to visit this town, for whatever reason, this is undoubtedly the best choice and possibly the only place you'll get a smile!
Situated inside the defensive star-fort which dominates the local countryside this wonderful hotel offers massive bedrooms, stunning views and fantastic traditional Portuguese cuisine. The hotel staff were attentive and caring and nothing was too much trouble for them. The portions were generous, the choices small but excellent as we all tried different dishes from the menu. The star-fort is a must to walk around as are the neighbouring battlesites from the Renaissance and Napoleonic eras. The town has an almost wild-west feel and one could imagine the village being used as a film set, with Clint Eastwood as the man with no name riding into town in search of bandits, such is the rustic charm of this ancient settlement.
This was a Pousada on our last trip. Like many of them the place had a somewhat austere and dated feel to it. However the rooms are very nice and the common areas spacious. Great outdoor patio views and very clean and tidy. The staff were magnificent, really helpful. Dinner was pretty good although somewhat limited choice. Parking on site. Good value for money and the only "luxury" offering in town.
Beautiful building. Lovely and plentiful common areas and nice, breezy, patio. Staff try very hard to be helpful. Restaurant just OK. Portions are very generous and we enjoyed some dishes, but there were a few problems in preparation and better values can likely be had in town. But the hotel itself is spacious and lovely. We were glad we stayed.
Just enter the hotel, we already love the ambience, remind me my father design interior in 1980, really great hotel with beautiful design interior, Really freindly owner/ staff. We came in low season, she welcome us more then any hotel we've been, at the last we tried the best orginal food from Portugal. the kitchen food are excellent. We brought home some part of our dinner and cake. Fantastic place to stay in side the fortress, and the best hotel in Almeida with good price. All fantastic, the view, the originality. The Staff soo wonderful. Thanks a lot, we will come back again if we wiil visit Portugal and recommend to our family and friends.
The hotel is in a great location in town overlooking a section of the walled city. Truly wonderful views. While the hotel is a bit dated, it is comfortable enough. When you are out in the hinterlands, you have to understand that four star is different from a four star hotel in the city. T 022he rooms are plenty big, although furnishings could use some updating. There is a lift. The staff is fantastic, especially Fatima and Obispo, who are fun to talk to.
We visited Almeida as we have never visited a Portuguese Pousada. We still never have, as this charming hotel/restaurant is now no longer part of the Pousada chain. However, we were made very welcome and served a very tasty meal with a perfectly splendid bottle of Siria Wine. We arrived and were made very welcome indeed. By the time I had returned from washing my hands, my wife was ensconced on the terrace with two ice cold beers and a waiter fussing over her with great charm and welcome. In due course, we were taken to a table, just as the restaurant was filling with locals and Spaniards from just over the border.. We are determined to return and stay in the hotel instead of just visiting for a long, pleasant and very reasonable lunch.
The hotel is within the 'star fort' village and is comfortable if somewhat expensive and is showing signs of its age. The room was spacious and had all necessary facilities. The restaurant is somewhat formal and the food is good without being outstanding. There is no lift.
