We stayed at the beginning of September 2017, and checked in to at around 3pm on a Monday for just 7 nights. On check in I asked if we had been allocated high floor rooms as requested both on the Tui website and in a separate email to the hotel. Sadly not, ground floor rooms (my pet hate as rooms on the ground floor are always rubbish) but worse was to come. Our rooms were a twin and a double, we needed two twins and to get to them we had to walk down a long dark corridor with big holes in the walls, doors hanging off and builders in situ doing the things that builders do. It was very obvious that the hotel had not completed the refurb, as was indicated by Tui on the First Choice website that the refurb would be finished by the time we arrived. One room was very old and the other part refurbished. They also had a delightful view of the builders yard and a very big skip. Perfect. We complained to the snotty lady receptionist but got no help, we complained to the Tui Rep but just got patronised. Thankfully we were able to change rooms the next day, but this was down to Oscar on reception who was an absolute superstar and was the only member of staff in the hotel I would like to recommend. Oscar continued to check in with us throughout our stay to ensure we were OK, although to be fair we did have a pleasant interaction with Tommy the Guests Relations guy, but only after I left a damaging tweet. With only six days left we settled in to our new rooms. The refurbished rooms are comfortable, and could have been very well done but the overriding impression is that they have been done in a hurry and bodged where they can. Small things like actual plasters covering the holes in the wardrobe where they took the doors off and the smoke detector hanging from the ceiling. The furnishings are very Ikea (i.e Cheap), although the beds are very comfortable and the rooms kept clean. The safe was also a bit hit and miss. Food is very average and recycled from service to service ( I am a catering manager for a 1000+ guest site, I know the tricks). Brussels sprouts and carrots with cheese sauce for breakfast. Food not very hot, and in fact one night the chicken fillet was actually raw. Very dangerous and at no point did I see any chefs taking food temperatures at hot holding level. Desserts very average and not home made. Ice cream and salads good. Most drinks from self service taps, only used the bar once in reception... grumpiest staff member ever. Was told that if I wanted tonic water we had to get it ourselves from the self serve, even though she had the same equipment in front of her. We also were dismayed to see that only some drinks were available to normal All Inclusive guests, most carried an extra charge or were available to "premium" AI. Surely All inclusive should mean just that. Nasty cocktails made from a prepared mix . Apart from Oscar, the only other highlight of our holiday was the entertainments boys. Keiron was an absolute star and has great people skills, Has a great ability to interact with Nannies and teenage daughters alike. Very lovely boy, who's own nanny and mum should be very proud of. In fact my husband, who normally has violent thoughts towards any boy within a 3 mile radius of our attractive 18 year old daughter very much liked young Kieron. Also special mention to Piotr for the Aqua Gym in the pool, although the earlobe rubbing was a bit strange :-) All in all a very average hotel and we have stayed in much better 4 stars. Whether it will be better when the refurbishments are completed and all the services are up and running (no pool snacks available just some dried up cake and sandwiches) remains to be seen. But they are doing themselves no favours by putting guests near builders in very old and unsuitable rooms.
It was ok for young children but not really for teenagers My husband walked down the road to a pub to watch football and was stopped and asked if he would like to take two girls for some drinks and fun.
Overall We had a good time in this hotel but have definitely stayed in better 4* hotels in the Canary Islands. The beginning of the holiday wasn't great , we arrived around 730pm , ok it's not peak but hardly the minute of the night and was met with a long queue with one unfortunate staff member there to deal with all the people. Anyway didn't get much better in the room , while it was a refurbished room there was no air conditioning. Well, there was a machine but it didn't work at all. Somebody did come up to check it but it was never fixed , remember this was August when temperatures were hitting 40degrees so this wasn't good. I understood the hotel was only reopening after a refurb but the poolside snacks were there one day , not the next . Very odd. There was no games room , ok I know it's hardly a deal breaker but kids were disappointed there wasn't one . The pool is way way too small for a hotel this size . Food in restaurant was good , not amazing and was mostly fish at night . Again, no air conditioning in the restaurant so everybody was sweating . I agree with previous post the water here from machines tasted suspiciously like tap water to me , please look into this. Entertainment again hit and miss, there was a great queen tribute band some nights and a fun Trolls animation another night but then there were nights of bingo and casino which consisted of a queue of 200 kids spinning a wheel ?????!!! Unfortunately I found the staff mostly unfriendly too, at the bar ( pool bar) at night and an extremely grumpy life guard and one or two at reception were similar . Must mention Piotr and Thomas from animation team as being extremely friendly and the pool foam party and inflatable games were brilliant. Shame kids weren't allowed their lilos otherwise although I can see why with the pool being so small. If the hotel added another restaurant , a bigger pool or a bar ( not poolside) at night it would be a better rating
Overall, this holiday was very enjoyable and very lively. Definitely more of a family orientated hotel. Really good location in terms of close to shops, the beach and the dunes. Not sure it fully represents a four star hotel, as we’ve stayed in more luxury four star hotels. I would recommend this to families as it’s a safe environment for all. We will not be returning as we feel that we have stayed in better 4 star hotels, but that’s not to put off people wanting to stay here, as it is still a lovely place to stay providing you get a refurbished room. We put together a list of things we picked up along the way. ROOM Extremely disappointed we were placed in one of the rooms that had not been refurbished; we were essentially placed in the building site part of the hotel. If you get placed in on of these rooms I would complain as you’re paying the same amount as someone that is placed in a refurbished modern room. We were woken up a couple of mornings by contractors. Our room was a really long walk to the pool or restaurant, it was a bit of trek if you needed anything from your room. Also we were given twin beds instead of a double! We tried pushing our beds together, but because the floor was so slippery our beds drifted and we woke up miles apart again. It was great to have air con in the room although we found it to be not very cold and needed an upgrade. We found only one plug available to use and that was in the bathroom, we think that one is needed by the bed area for charging phones and cameras etc. Towels in the rooms are very small and need to be bigger! The lift is super scary and they are too small! The doors want to shut before you can even get in to them, they don give you enough time to get everyone in! Also we had no idea where the emergency exit or stairs were on our floor, which worried us. FOOD Water from the juice machines in the dinner hall tastes very weird, I think this needs to be checked! Also the Juice from the machines are literally pure sugar and too sweet but very watery in consistency! Disappointed that there was no bright orange Fanta that you normally get in holiday resorts! Food at lunchtimes and dinnertimes got really repetitive, so we went out of the hotel a couple of times. Really didn’t like any of the desserts available, they just weren’t very nice to be honest. And also the ice cream was a little cheap and it wasn’t the tastiest, but the wafers and toppings at dinnertime were great! We found that a lot of the food wasn’t labelled especially the desserts, we want to know what we are putting on our plates! Staff in the dining hall were always friendly and smiling, a couple of names we picked up on were Adrian and Kayla, very smiley and welcoming. FOOD BY THE POOL We really liked the slushy drinks by the pool, they were perfect for the hot weather, although it wasn’t working one day, which was a shame. The snack station between meals was a little disappointing; it was basically all the rejected food from breakfast. We went and bought snacks like crisps and chocolate from the shop over the road. Can’t get a drink before 11am, not even a soft drink, so you have be dehydrated until then. BAR You can buy water bottles from behind the bar, however you will get more value for money if you pop over the road to the shop, you get a bigger bottle for half the price. We were really disappointed by the fact that you couldn’t get any water anywhere in the hotel at night time, we woke up in the night needing water and when we asked reception he had to give us one of his personal unopened bottle. It’s annoying that you only have access to water between 11am-11pm –water is vital and should not be included in all-inclusive hours. Probably the poorest variety of cocktails/mocktails on the all inclusive list I have ever seen at a hotel, only 3 cocktails and 1 mocktail which got very boring by day 3. For a four star hotel I would expect more all inclusive drinks on the menu! POOL If you want to get a good sunlounger with an umbrella then you need to get down there by 8:30 to place your towel down. The pool is not provided with enough umbrellas for shade in our opinion. One day all towels were removed, which I think was a little bit out of order really as there wasn’t any issues with people and sunlougers. We didn’t like the fact that people could smoke round the pool and was found it to be too overpowering and plus there were many children running about, if I was a mother I wouldn’t want my child passive smoking in a child friendly area. We found the pool to be a little cold, by about 4pm its too chilly to stay in for too long. I think the main pool is a bit small for the size of the hotel. Toilets by the pool get very disgusting quite quickly, but the cleaner seemed to be constantly cleaning it! ENTERTAINMENT Entertainment at night was very average, probably great for kids though. I have seen better shows at other hotels, although we thought the Loro show was very good with the parrots. Why isn’t there a dance floor? Felt a bit gutted that we couldn’t dance after the show was over, what’s the point in the DJ continuing with no dance floor? Could you maybe stop people from smoking on the terrace/balcony facing the stage? It’s quite closed in and it’s not fair on non-smokers having to breath that in if they want to sit there. The animators were really enthusiastic, we particularly like Kieran as we thought his energy was very contagious and all the kids absolutely loved him. We did find some one of the animators annoying in the mornings when we were getting settled round the pool as they didn’t get the hint that we weren’t interested in some activities. RECEPTION We had a really god check in, it does take a good 10 mins to check in though which is a bit slow in my opinion. The lady was very nice and welcoming. When we had to go back to the reception for anything else a lot of other receptionists were very frosty and not welcoming at all. We asked for a late checkout and they said to come back and ask on the morning of us checking out. Check out day arrived and we went to the desk and asked again and were told it was not possible! Our flight wasn’t until 1:30 am in the morning and to wait in the lobby! Seeing as it is September we know for a fact that these rooms are not fully booked and could have placed the next people in a different room. First ever hotel where late checkout has been an issue. Wifi was quite bad in the rooms and reception area, it kept disconnecting from our phones and then took ages to reconnect, this just could be a new teething problem. The lobby/reception area was so comfortable, great place to sit!
Stayed here in January for my birthday .hotels position is great right next to the dunes and just down the road from the Yumbo centre . The food was great everyday something different to be tempted to . The room was very spacious the lifts were sometimes out of action but usually these were fixed quite quickly . Enjoyed it that much that we are going back on 26th September and so looking forward to it. Looking forward to seeing to the entertainment as panchi had the kids there enthralled
Just returned from a week at IFA Catarina, we were in a group of 6 adults and 2 children and it was fantastic. I really don't understand the previous bad reviews. We were all in newly refurbished rooms overlooking the pool and they were beautiful rooms. The only thing I would say could improve the rooms would be to have tea/coffee making facilities and a dressing table area. The bathroom has a huge mirror with integrated hair dryer but not the best place for the wife to do her make up etc whilst everyone is trying to shower and the room is full if steam. Another pointer is that the guard rail on the fold down bed has a tendency to fall down and hits the person lying on the bed, could do with some sort if locking mechanism to hold it up. (I used my belt in the end to stop it falling on my sons head) The hotel is immaculately clean and staff keep it clean throughout the day. I do agree with previous reviews that say the food is a bit repetitive but it was always cooked beautifully. The only negative thing I would say is that after 11pm it is impossible to get a drink as all machines are switched off, I think it would be good to at least leave one in reception area on for soft drinks as well as tea and coffee just so you can get a drink from somewhere should you need it at night. We took advantage of the in room fridge and just got our own drinks from the nearby supermarkets. The pool areas and entertainment was fantastic, can't fault any of it at all. Whilst we were there the animation team did there own renditions of shrek and grease which were both great. Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel for any family, short transfer to the airport and lots nearby. Playa del ingles is a short taxi ride away (€4) and taxis can be ordered easily at reception. I look forward to returning again soon.
Stayed for a week at the end of August. Room was immaculate, cleaned daily and plenty of space for a family of 4, including a fridge. Air con was awesome, often had to turn off as it got too cold! Pool area was awesome my 3 and 5 year old loved the slide, and I lost count of the times each day they went down it. There ways always sunbeds to be had, however if you wanted a certain spot you had to be earlyish for that. Food was amazing, we did not eat out once, yes there are some staple repetitions each day. But each day I ate a totally different meal for lunch and dinner. Lots of choices, for meat and fish, and some of the chef's small salad bowls at dinner were divine, especially one with brie and a chickpea salad. The snacks in between were also good, if you needed them, yes the same sandwich but cheese and ham pleases everyone really. However there was also different cakes each day, small salad bowls that changed, fruit smoothies in a pot, fruit salads, and ice cream in the afternoon plenty to choose from. All inclusive drinks are help yourself to beer, wine and soft drinks meaning my children could happily get their own and I could stay by the pool. The animation team are amazing, always so cheery and energetic but not over pushy if you do not want to take part. My family took part in aquagym, waterbikes, waterpolo, darts, cocktail making ("shakey shakey shakey!") all lots of fun. The shows in the evening were different each night, some provided by the animation team and some from professionals. My youngest absolutely loved the Panchi disco!!!My 3 and 5 year old especially loved the 'True Colours' show and the magic show. The parrot show is short and to have a photo at 20 euros is quite expensive but still worth it for the smile on my sons face everytime he looks at it. Overall the only fault I could mention was a member of staff at reception couldn't find and I don't think really looked hard to find our photo that had been delivered after the Parrot show. Another member of staff later in the day was more than happy to look around, as was Jamie the TUI rep when we mentioned it to him. Will definitely consider staying here again
Had a fantastic time hotel was modern and very clean. The food was amazing and never got boring. The rooms cleaned daily and fresh towels. The entertainment was perfect but a special shout out to kerion the entertainer from animation team. By far the best we have every met really made my daughters holiday .
My wife and I along with our youngest 2 children have just returned from an amazing holiday. Spent 2 fantastic weeks at the newly refurbished IFA Catarina. We had stayed at the hotel for a week in Oct 2015 which is why we returned this year. We cannot understand the small number of negative reviews. From the moment we arrived the staff were incredible, even the cleaners, maintenance and backroom teams were as pleasant and polite as the front of house people. The entire hotel was spotlessly clean and our newly refurbished room was great. I couldn't seem to get the air con to work and within 5 minutes a very friendly maintenance guy was at my door patiently explaining that I had to have our balcony door closed! Reception team, in particular Oscar, we're very helpful with calling us Taxis, directions, advice and info. Pools and grounds were clean and inviting with plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas. Animation/Entertainment team were amazing, always smiling and joking especially Peter and all the girls. Hotel is in a great location, yards from the beach and in a quieter part of town but still only minutes away from the shops and nightlife. Food and drinks are buffet/self service and considering the many nationalities and age range of the guests catered for we all thought the food was great and didn't eat out once. Thank you all at the Catarina for a wonderful holiday - we'll definitely be back soon!
Excellent again This is the second time our family has stayed at this hotel, and I have to say, amazing what a transformation This hotel is going from strength to strength, when We reviewed the hotel last year we were more than impressed with everything on offer and it seems to be even better this year, from the self service drinks, to the light and airy newly painted rooms with mattresses that are so comfy you never want to get out of them, I even think the air conditioning has been improved, our room was 480 to the north side of the hotel it was very quiet with everything we could ask for, the maids work very hard making up the rooms throughout the day. All the staff are a credit to this hotel going out of their way to help you with anything you need and always happy in their jobs, everyone is so pleasant always saying hello, our son is autistic and can be quite demanding at times but the waitress in the restaurant was very good with him Thankyou, this really did make our stay here very relaxing.😃 The food 5***** what a variety fish, veal, rabbit, paella, cheese burgers, chips, chicken all on one dinner buffet mealtime serving,on top of additional very fresh cheeses peppers sauces fruit eggs, the chefs certainly do the restaurants proud. Everyone enjoyed both pools and we did spend quite a lot of time here ,the life guard was very good he was always walking around doing his job keeping everyone safe. The only downside to this wonderful piece of paradise is the occasional plume of cigarette smoke from outside smoking. The evenings entertainment was very good particularly the live music wow. The beach bus is also very good it drops you a few steps from the beach and then returns back to the hotel, what a lovely holiday experience Thankyou ifa Catarina. Many many thanks 5***** We are already looking forward to returning next year.
