Staid at the Hotel Fukuoka Garden Palace for business purposes. Nice location, close to Tenjin, where you can find many shops and restaurants. The staff were very nice and caring, and even let me use their refrigerator (I bought some spicy mentaiko). What I was surprised the most was the spacious room that I was given. I have travelled many times to Japan, and usually the hotel rooms are small and cramped (I say this even though I am only 170 cm tall). The size of the room was large enough so that I could leave my two pieces of luggage open on the floor, and still walk around comfortably. The wifi worked fine as well. I would say very good value for the money.
Really good service. The breakfast buffet had traditional food and western food. The western food was very good. The hotel rooms were very nice and quiet. The hotel is also close to the train station. The train station has some really nice places to eat.
During our three week visit to Japan, as a part of an organized tour, we stayed at seven different hotels in the Garden Palace chain. This was the only hotel we did not like. However, we did sleep very well, and I guess at the end of the day, that probably matters more than anything else. Our biggest complaint was the layout of the room. We paid for a double and had a double bed with pillows, robes, slippers and towels for two, but the double bed was stuck up against a wall. Made for less than easy access for one person. We believe other solo travelers in our party had similar rooms with double beds, but were charged for one person in the room, not two. The room sure looked as if it needed maintenance and updating. The bathroom was not very clean. Where the wires came out of the wall, there was no plate covering, just a hole in the wall. The room looked as if it could use a paint job. There were no plug outlets for charging electronic gadgets (and we traveled with a bunch). We had to unplug the refrigerator or use an inconvenient wall outlet by the coat rack by the door to charge our gadgets. The room was also on the smaller side of the Garden Palace I honestly do not remember the breakfast buffet set up, which means it was probably neither poor nor outstanding. The hotel is located on a side street between two east-west main streets. The hotel is slightly less than a ten minute walk from the Tenjin subway station and shopping complex. So, the location is both convenient but on a quiet side street. My personal view is that I would look for other lodging choices, were I to visit Fukuoka in the future. If you see reviews mentioning renovated rooms and / or are traveling solo, then this hotel might warrant some consideration, but I would also consider other options as well.
We stayed one night at the GP Fukuoka, at the end of our trip, after traveling around Kyushu for a week. Overall the experience was extremely positive. The desk staff were extremely friendly and helpful, although they only spoke a little English. We made the reservation on the Internet, at the last minute before we left for the pleasure part of our trip, and then walked over to the hotel to ask if they'd keep our suitcase for five days until we returned. They had no problem, and were very diligent, keeping my business card with the bag and so on. When we came back and checked in, they had already moved the bag to our room. I had been expecting a small and possibly funky place, given the reasonable price (about 7000 yen, or USD 85). I was surprised to find a clean, spacious lobby, coffee bar, and all the amenities. Our room was large by Japanese business hotel standards, with a desk and chair, two arm chairs and a table, in addition to a double bed. It had tea service, free wired internet, and decent lighting for reading. All in all, we were very comfortable - a far cry from our experience at our other Fukuoka hotel! The only downside to this hotel is that it's about a ten minute walk to the subway. It's situated between two subway stops. So we ended up taking a taxi to the airport rather than going by the subway as we originally planned. However, the general location is quite good, with a big shopping area a few blocks away and the major entertainment center of Nasuka Island about a fifteen minute walk in the other direction.
