Villa Tolomei Hotel & Resort5.0 out of 5.0

We read on the website that this hotel is 5 mins from Florence. This is correct in the sense that it's 5 mins from a sign that says Florence - it's actually a 45 min walk to the centre up and down a steep hill and through narrow streets - not what we expected. Villa tolomei has the usual amenities you would expect from a 5* , lovely pool with an amazing view, clean rooms, wifi etc but the food at the restaurant is very expensive so to are the drinks around the pool. There are strict rules regarding what you can eat / drink around the pool which doesn't really make for a pleasant relaxing atmosphere. Room service is charged at a ridiculous 35€ per person, so if a family of four wanted a cup of tea and a glass of juice you would be charged € 140 before you took a sip of your 6€ drink - avoid ordering unless you have very deep pockets . Generally the staff are really nice, the guy at the pool, and the woman at the bar. However the woman behind reception was quite rude to my daughter when we asked to go back into our room after checking out ( even though before 12) as we forgot something- not really the way to treat 5 star guests . I wouldn't recommend this hotel unless you had a car and didn't mind being a few miles away from Florence .
Overall quite alright but for a 5 star I would have expected at least fast speed internet and shower without black mould on the silicon. Nor the king materasso that were 2 materasses pushed together. When we went there were 40 degrees outside and we ask if we could have complimentary bottle of water and they told us no ! The only complimentary bottle is only for the first night! How cheap! Small plastic bottle in italy cost 30 cent! But the supermarket is far away that sometimes it would be nice to have a cold water bottle waiting for you in the room. Ps: cleaning lady burged in one day at 5 pm while I was taking a nap! The rooms are clean but boy... just add more channel that are not only in arabic...
Feedback is a gift and I hope that the management of Villa Tolomei appreciates receiving it and actually takes note. Normally feedback is given AFTER a stay however I am only 2 days into a two week stay. I have a specific point to raise and hope this can still be addressed whilst I am here. As is clear from the attached photo the room service charge in the hotel is a stunning 35 Euro per person (mentioned bottom right). This means 53 Euro charged for one 18 Euro hamburger delivered to my room, and 159 Euro if my wife and son like a hamburger too. In this 30 room hotel few rooms will be more than 30 meters from the kitchen. A charge of 5 or 10 Euro per order would be reasonable. Not so a 105 Euro charge. Some would call this charge "on the high side", others would call it a rip-off. A way to avoid the charge is to order the same meal at the poolside, or more accurately put, on the terrace in between the pool and the restaurant. In that case no service charge is due. However, although the pool is open until 19:30 hours, this option is only available until 18:00 hours. After 18:00 hours food can only be served inside the restaurant. The reason given for this is that the restaurant staff cannot serve clients "in different locations", and from 18:00 hours onwards the kitchen "is making preparations for the dinner in the restaurant itself". The management was quoted as saying that exeptions to this policy could not be made as "many other guests would want this as well if they saw you eating there". That is exactly the point. Hotel guests that don't want to dress up for the restarant but rather have their meal in their room or a quick bite outside near the pool (laid back in swimming gear) are not served well in the hotel. If many guests want to have a meal in less formal setting outside near the pool that is probably what should be offered. Sell what your customers are asking for. The result of the current approach is not that hotel guests let themselves be forced like sheep to dine several courses in the restaurant. If one has to dress up one might as well take a taxi into town for less than 15 Euro. There you can enjoy a wide range of options for an excellent meal of your choice at significantly lower cost than in the restaurant. Alternatively guests will order food from town to be delivered to their room. This policy impacts on guests' overall appreciation of their stay at hotel villa Tolomei. This despite the attitude of the operational staff who spare absolutely no effort and go at great lenghts to serve the guests. The operational staff know what customers want, I call upon the management to empower the staff to actually deliver this service to the clients.
Villa Tolomei is a very nice place to stay for a night or two. In our case we stayed for 5 nights and in that time you notice little things that would make it a much nicer place to stay. Here are the things that we noticed. 1. They do not give you complimentary water, they say that they do but in reality they don't. (during our stay it was 38 degrees) 2. Breakfast is basic and is not re-freshed for the following day so in effect you get what is left over from the day before. 3. Shower gel is provided sometimes, it is hit and miss, sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. 4. Music is played by the pool in the afternoon which makes it hard to read and relax. 5. Your own snacks and beverages are 'forbidden' by the pool. 6. Room 25 is very close to where the cleaning staff gather. Avoid this room because of the noise outside if possible. 7. They claim on the website to be close to Florence centre, in reality it is a 40 min walk or 40 euros for a return taxi ride. On the plus side the pool is good, the gym looked great, the outside eating terrace is wonderful and the ac worked fine.
My family recently spent 5 nights at the Villa and it was well worth it. The staff were friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to accommodate our vegan daughter. They even went so far as to make her a special birthday cake with candles! The front desk staff- especially Serena- were extremely valuable in organizing and booking our daily excursions/tours. The rooms were lovely and very roomy- the pillows were wonderful! Thank you to Marco at the pool- he treated us like family- salut to you! I suggest the daily breakfast option- something for everyone. This is by far the best place to stay in Florence- a short cab ride into centre square or you can easily walk there in about 28 minutes. I can't flatter enough! We will stay there again. A five star hotel with reasonable rates.
If you are visiting Florence with kids, this hotel is a great option. The pool provides a great respite from the city life! The restaurant on site is great as are the views. The rooms are large and spacious and clean. You can walk into Florence in less than 1/2 hour if you desire. We enjoyed all the options available from Villa Tolomei.
I was staying in my apartment located in the city center and was interested in using a local pool. When I realized the one I usually visit wasn't available, a call was made to Villa Tolomei and they welcomed me to their villa as though I was the most important guest they have ever had. I ended up returning to the villa for 4 days to swim, and every staff member I encountered could not have been any nicer! Specifically, Marco, who works at the pool was very attentive with food and drink service all day. It was as though he anticipated what I needed without being intrusive at all. The pool is stunning, and the area kept neat and tidy by Marco and his team. Marco went out of his way to ensure all guests were looked after, had drinks and meals when they were in need of them, and that the level of sound/environment was comfortable for all (with and without children). I will absolutely be returning to Villa Tolomei, I will suggest it for anyone traveling to Florence who want to be close to the city but enjoy the calmness of the countryside (and the stunning views!). When I return I do hope that Marco will be poolside when I arrive!
We were fortunate enough to have got married at the beautiful Villa Tolomei on 29th May 2017. After staying at the hotel the previous year we knew it would make the most perfect wedding venue and it actually still managed to exceed our expectations. First of all, the hotel is really unique in that it is located so close to the centre of Florence yet it is surrounded by hills, gardens, olive groves and vineyards, giving the impression that it is in the middle of the Tuscan countryside. This provided so much flexibility for our guests with many staying at Villa Tolomei and many others staying wherever they wanted in the city (a 5-10 minute taxi ride away). It was unforgettable being able to relax with some of our guests at the hotel for a couple of days before the wedding - we all enjoyed relaxing by the pool as the big day approached. The day itself was beyond our expectations and we are still dreaming about it. Since the hotels grounds are so expansive, we didn't notice a single other hotel guest during the day or evening. The event felt really private which is unheard of if you don't book a venue exclusively! Our guests were completely in awe of how stunning the venue and it's many spaced were - we were able to utilise the garden at the front of the villa for the ceremony, a very private and beautiful garden at the back for our aperitif, the cloisters for dinner, pool area for the cake cutting and the oil mill room for the party. Since the oil mill room is sound proof we had no time restrictions so we could party for as long as we wanted without disturbing other guests. One of the most impressive aspects of the day was the incredible staff who have been so attentive and professional from the outset. Whether you're staying as a hotel or wedding guest, the service and hospitality from each member of staff is spectacular and very sincere. They strike the perfect balance of being really efficient and professional as well as friendly and sincere. They are not stuffy or pompous - something you would certainly find at many other 5 star hotels. So many of our guests commented on the quality of the staff. Our event planner Irene is a credit to the venue and she couldn't have done more for us over the last 18 months as well as coordinating everything so seamlessly on the day. She even managed to source last minute sparklers for us on the day as we were unable to get them beforehand. Finally, the food and wine was some of the best we've ever had and most of our guests thought the same. It wasn't typical wedding food but the type of food you would be served if you dined at a high end restaurant - the quality was spot on. Everyone is still raving about the wedding and we can truly say it was the best day of our lives. Choosing Villa Tolomei was the best decision we've made and we will certainly be returning regularly in the future. It's a wonderful base for exploring Florence and the wider Tuscan region, it's the best hotel we've experienced and it will always have a place in our hearts. P.s. we haven't even mentioned the rooms. They are beautiful and keep many original details of the renaissance villa. Stunningly high ceilings, great bathrooms, lovely decor and very spacious. I particularly love the wooden windows/shutters which open up fully so you can gaze at the scenery around you and take in the scent of jasmine in Spring/Summer.
Very peaceful hotel. Excellent location if you want to rest from a busy shopping or sightseeing day downtown (like ours...!). You can actually walk down to Firenze in 20-25 minutes but the way back up will be a bit more strenuous (especially in the heath of the summer...). Taxi back will be between 12 and 14 Euros pending on pick-up location downtown. Room space was excellent (and with air con) but small windows. Food is good but not memorable. Good wine list though... Very friendly staff (English sometimes so so....). Fantastic views from the swimming pool and nice bar tenders. Not really a five star yet: no iron or kettle in the room, wifi is there but not reliable and slow, showerhead not really functional, so in summary just a few snags... But overall quite charming even if a bit pricey.
To say it upfront: it's not a terrible hotel! I'm only rating this in regard to its 5 stars: Pro: - nice pool and nice view - friendly staff - 20 minute walk to Porta romana Con: - very poor wifi - a selection of maybe three channels which are English or German - very poor breakfast selection (fruit salad and tomatoes were the only healthy option) - rooms quite average, bathroom far from 5 star experience - luckily they were able to upgrade me to a nicer room, since the "classic" room was dark, small and had a very cheap feel to it - the room service fee of 35 euros per person is very unfortunate. Not to say ridiculous - menu in room wasn't up to date - ashtray wasn't cleaned when I moved in - minibar doesn't get restocked - grounds are very messy, homepage made it sound like you could go for a stroll on the 3h land I could go on and on. I stay in 5* hotels quite often and have to say that this hotel, when you look into the detail, is no more than 3 stars. Very unfortunate because this was supposed to be a three day getaway.
