Not sure how this hotel is only 2 stars as the room we stayed in was a brilliant size for me and my 4 friends and the bedroom was up to standards. The hotel room cost me and my friends about €95 each which i believe to be quite cheap for a two night stay. The hotel is run 24 hour so there was never a problem with getting back in early hours after being out all night as there was always someone there to buzz us in. There is a bar and a nightclub attached to the hotel where we spent the majority of our visit because they were great! 10/10 definitely will be coming again.
Had a lovely stay with friends recently. Nice lively bar. Lovely irish breakfast even smoked salmon n fresh brewed coffee. Rooms warm, clean and tidy. Reception staff very helpful. Only downside is noise from the nightclub. Worth a stay if visiting south side of Dublin.
Location is fine. No parking. Didn't mind the noise level and room was basic. Also lady who checked us in from the north was very pleasant. However, 2 days after leaving I checked my bank account and a further 40 euro was taking from my account by the hotel and when I called (from abroad) I was told that the room was soiled and they just took my money to pay for it. The room did not require any extra cleaning whatsoever. Refused to give me back my money and didn't call to explain anything. It was a man I was dealing with on this occasion over the phone. This hotel stole from me and ruined my holiday. Will be so wary leaving card details anywhere in future. Appalling.
Really dirty room and dirty bathtub. No toilet paper and a lot of noise from the restaurant/bar during the night while i was in the third floor. Bad bed with suspension and really unpleasant restaurant staff. I was treated vert badly from the members of the restaurant. Very dissatisfied.
Cute, a bit messy around the edges, but great value for money, there is a student indie vibe to this end of Dublin, which suited my boys 19 and 21. We had two rooms on the top floor, a family room and a double, check in was easy breakfast was in the pub (coffee is to be avoided) and we pre paid it. Hotel is walking distance from every thing, nice to have the space along the canal, which had a great crowd in the morning and after work. Perfect route for a run if you dont know the city. Airport bus is 8 mins walk away. Was it noisy as per the reviews? At the weekend yes, but not too bad, lots of European international students drinking on the bank of canal and singing Queen and Rod Steward in the early hours, but a hint of rain and they were gone. If you have never back packed or gone budget, don't book, but I liked it.
Avoid this hotel. My wife booked this hotel through booking.com for a family room as we we going to a wedding nearby. We had our nine month old daughter and neice with us. Unfortunately due to the extremely bad snow in Ireland (March 3rd) we could not get to the hotel (we live in Cork). When we rang the hotel to cancel our booking, the "manager" Valentino (?), was extremely rude to us and would not refund us our money. I understand that hotels have policies in relation to refunds but given the circumstances I thought there may be some leeway. We tried to explain our situation in relation to the bad weather and how other hotels on booking.com waive the canecellation due to the extreme circumtances with the weather. He said "we are not other hotels, we are The Portobello". We then contacted booking.com to see if they could help us get a refund, or even switch our accomodation to another night. Eventhough booking.com did their best the hotel would still not even allow us to switch to another night and no refund has still been given to us. In my opinion, I would not recommend this hotel based on the way their manager treated us. Avoid.
This was a last-minute booking for the Ireland-Wales game in Dublin. So availability was low and prices high. Compounded by the fact I wanted a room for 3. In summary, great experience. Rooms impeccable, service at check-in and breakfast great, excellent value and we will return.
I was a bit dubious about booking this hotel after reading about the noise levels. We stayed on a Tuesday night and had a room on the second floor. The room was very clean we heard no music coming from the bar, we had a good nights sleep. My husband and I went to the bar for a drink it was really old world and lovely. My teenage son stayed in the room. Breakfast was included which made our stay in Dublin terrific value as accommodation is totally overpriced in the city. I don’t know about noise level at the weekend but I would definitely stay mid week again.
For anyone travelling with a car this hotel does not have a car park at the hotel. You need to cross the canal and find the car park somewhere on the right. Personally I couldn't find the car park and ended up getting lost in the one way system. This is not surprising considering the directions I got from the reception. I was given a landmark that wasn't there, even when I looked for it the following day in daylight. I found the hotel staff unhelpful on all 6 phone calls to the hotel and never once spoke to a native english speaker. I was told "the problem is you , no one else ever has trouble" .. really?? I had a pre paid room and ended up having to stay elsewhere because I couldn't find the car park and then couldn't get back to the area where the hotel was when I got swallowed up in the one way system. I was horrified at the lack of interest and insulted by the way the manager spoke to me, even when I explained we were in Dublin for an emergency medical procedure so my concentration wasn't as sharp as usual. I feel they took advantage of my situation and even though they only held the room for 4 hours for me they charged for the night. Cannot recommend this hotel and I am an easy person to please.
A large room, shower and bath, good bed, free and well working wifi. Pub next door, in walking distance of tourist attractions. Easy bookingsystem and within the category cheap hotels is this an excellent choice.
