We were 4 adults, in a family suite (regular rate but it is indeed a suite). Very clean, nice living-room area (we turned it into a breakfast area - breakfast is not included), with tea/coffee, cookies. Quiet too. Very friendly staff at the reception, quaint area in Dublin (the canal is relaxing). Cons : The bed we had was sunken so we didn't sleep too well. The other beds were fine. The location : a little far from the center (although, as I said, it's kind of charming).35-45 minutes' walk to Temple Bar. There is a stop for the airport shuttle a block away, but the receptionist told us it'd be the same price to just get a taxi. He arranged for a taxi for us and indeed, we got to the airport much faster, for 25 or 30 euros including tip (no extra for the luggage).
Pub is open til the early hours of the morning on weekends and it's very lively! I wouldn't expect too much from this place. Breakfast ok, rooms adequate and I guess Guinness isn't too far to walk to get a pint! Lots of places to eat nearby
I didn't actually stay here. I made a reservation and thought I cancelled it on their website. Was it my fault for not checking that I got a confirmation? Maybe. Was it their fault because their website didn't send them the message? Maybe. All I know is that I was billed 239 Euros for a no-show and they weren't very nice about it when I contacted them. In any event - I had a wonderful stay at the fabulous Camden Court Hotel - closer to central Dublin, all amenities including a beautiful pool, and it was CHEAPER!!!
Don't be put off that it's not right in Dublin city centre its an easy 15 minute walk one straight road right into the heart of this great City. Nice canal side location the rooms are fine the food is good the Guinness of course is great and the staff very polite professional and friendly.
I work in the sector so seldom write reviews. However I'm going to make an exception here. I travel regularly to Dublin on business and have accepted sadly modest standards for inflated prices. A common plague. The Portobello is the first traditional hotel that has impressed me in the last few years. Why because it is clean, friendly, exceptional location, and value for money. No need to rabbit on, you have it all there. I'll finish by saying I will be returning again soon.
I stayed here on a Wednesday night. The room was fine, with iron and board, hair dryer and generous tea and coffee offering. The service was great - the guy on reception couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. However, there was some filming taking place outside which meant that the actual entrance was out of bounds and you had to traipse through the downstairs bar to get in and out. The worst thing though was the noise from the bar at night. I expect noise on a weekend, or if staying right in the city centre. This was a Wednesday though, so I didn't expect a DJ blaring out 90;s chart music until 1am - just perfect when you have to be up at 4am for a flight. A shame really as the room was fine, and the service was great.
Staff was very polite and friendly. Not very far from city center and close to main attractions. The pub downstairs makes it more interesting and Irish charming. Breakfast was good and enough. Room was not very spacious but it had more then enough amenities for a solo traveler - business or pleasure. Bit noisy during the night.
The bathroom was small, there was some music from the bar. The mattress was of poor quality but it was reflective of the value. I would stay here again, staff was friendly and accommodating. Location is right near the bus and near the canal. There are plenty of shops and restaurants and pubs close by.
We stayed at the Portobello Hotel on our last night in Dublin. It was easy to find, but parking is sparse. We scored a street spot outside, but had to pay until 6:30 pm. The staff was great - gave us a recommendation for a laundromat and we went down and ended up having them wash and fold our laundry on a rush (picked up 3 hours later). Quick to grab an Uber to explore Temple Bar and other parts of the city. The room was very clean and was remodeled. Quiet place to sleep in spite of being in the city. Will definitely stay again.
The location is ideal and the man at reception was charming however I found the room cold and a tad bleak, it could really use some sprucing up and a bit more heating ( I was frozen) but for the price I suppose you can't have too many expectations especially in Dublin. My husband is a professional musician and he forgot a box of stuff in the room (reeds and various other things essential paraphernalia with the instrument he plays). When he discovered this and phoned, he was told that house keeping hadn't found anything, that was a bit of a let down.
