A genuine mistake where another member of the party had already booked accommodation. Realised the mistake within minutes of booking and the hotel would only charge us 90% of the booking fee. Rang the hotel to try and come to one arrangement but took no consideration or an attempt to even try. The receptionist was plain rude and not helpful at all. The cost of this cancellation cost more than the whole trip. Instead I've had to pay for everything but have no spends to go. Absolute waste.
Stayed here 2 nights in December. Got zero sleep the first night and only a couple hours the second because the room faced the street, which was terribly noisy (engines revving, tires squealing, horns honking, sirens, people yelling and laughing -- all night long!). Even with the windows closed. And, like most German hotels, there was no fan to provide "white noise" to block out all this racket. Also, there was a problem with our keys and every time we went to the room we had to have a staff person let us in. Most of the staff were very unfriendly, including the one who took us to our room the first time and didn't say one word to us. Also, when I checked out, the gentleman at the counter couldn't even say "thank you" or "have a nice day".
On arrival the hotel looked really impressive, marble entrance with a really grand staircase. We were initially guided to the underground secure garage to self park our car and made our way up to reception in the lift. We arrived at around 11:30 a considerable amount of time ahead of check in so left out bags with reception and headed out to the Christmas markets for the day. The location is great, took us around 5 minutes to get into the main shops and markets. This is probably where the positives end. The rest of the experience was rather dull. We arrived back late afternoon from the markets and had to make the effort to be greeted by the staff on reception to complete check in. The reception staff didn't seem particularly interested in us, this was also the case a little later in the evening when we asked for someone to ring for a food reservation, as our German isn't great we were concerned that whilst making a telephone call the language barrier would be too great so hoped that some of the hotel staff could do it on our behalf. They did do this but looked at us very blank and where very reluctant to go ahead. We also asked a girl at the bar for some help with local restaurants and she wasn't interested in the conversation and went back to drinking her red bull and being on her mobile phone. Later in the evening we returned to the hotel and had a couple of drinks in the hotel bar, the TV and music got turned off at around 11:15 and when we asked for a hot chocolate to take to the room we were shot down and told the bar had now closed. We were sat there with some drinks and she then picked our glasses up that had some drink left in and took them to the bar to be washed. It wasn't even as if we were the only guests in the bar, the bar was full and she clearly just wanted everyone out. We opted for an exclusive room, it was very nice and spacious and the bathroom was very nice with a large jacuzzi bath. The bedding and pillows though where very limited. I woke up with a very sore neck as the one pillow given was so thin. The next morning at around 09:50 the maid knocked on the door and made her way in, at this point we were in the process of getting ready as check in was at 11am. Very worrying considering we had a check out time that the maid thought it was okay to enter the room at 0950. On check out the staff again at reception where very disengaged and showed us no interest! My partner paid for the parking charge of €13 and she didn't look up from her desk once to thank us or ask us about our stay. Parking is great, underground garage which is very secure and has cameras. However there are very limited spaces, we arrived way ahead of check in time and manses to secure the last space. Possible around 25 spaces for a very big hotel. Very poor service but in a hotel that looks and has so much potential! We won't stay here again!
The hotel it's self was great, offering great value for money, it the perfect location to the shops and railway station. The room was very clean and warm, with everything you could need. The staff were very friendly and helpful as well as very professional. Couldn't ask for anything more.
Ideally situated at the far end of town, this hotel is ideal for a short break. They were very accommodating and managed to find an extra large room for 6 of us (it actually had 7 beds in). Very friebdly staff and spotlessly clean. The breakfast thiough, at 15 euros was a bit expensive - plenty of cafes nearby.
The room was very big and had more than enought place for the 2 of us. The bathroom was also big and comfortable. The location was great with 10-15 min walk to the central station, right on the main street and 30 min walk to the signal iduna park.
I found the hotel interesting even from the very moment I entered into the extravagant lobby with its floor-to-wall burgundy marble. (Someone told me that the hotel had quite a history, but there was no time for the to elaborate on it.) It is quite big, with a lot of rooms. My room was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. WIFI is free. The breakfast buffet was ample with delicious warm and cold fare on offer. The best part was its location, with the start of a pedestrian shopping area right across the street, the modern train station just one block away, and great snack bars and restaurants very close by—even next door. There’s a fabulous jazz club just 3 blocks away.
This hotel is possibly the poshest place I have ever stayed! The lobby is all marble and gold with big chandeliers and a sweeping staircase. There are also some amazing fish tanks to look at. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We stayed in the cheaper excelsior rooms-still very nice and extremely clean. Had everything we needed. Pillows were a bit rubbish but what can you expect for such a cheap room in an amazing hotel! We didn't have the available breakfast as it was quite expensive. The hotel is right opposite the high street going towards the shopping centre, perhaps 20 min drive from the airport and 5 min walk from the train station. Only minor issue was they said they had international newspapers in the guide in the room, but when asked at reception they didn't. Not a big problem. Also free wifi was very good.
On first impressions, the hotel looks grand, with its imposing grand staircase and chandelier hanging in the reception area, but looks can be deceiving! Check in was quick, but I did get charged €6:50 and I don't know what it was for! My room was on the 4th floor, keyless entry. The lights were slow to click on in the corridors, they are on movement switches. Into the room, you have to put your room card into a socket for the power to come on, the trouble is, the power switches straight off when you remove the room card, so instant darkness! The room itself has loads of cupboard space and drawers. The double bed is two single beds pushed together. Tea and coffee but no milk. Bottle of water will cost you €4, no other snacks or refreshments. The bathroom had two sinks but only towels for 1 person, 1 sink had a big crack in it. A bottle of cheap smelling soap/shampoo between the two sinks with some makeup pads and cotton buds, another bottle of soap in the shower. The cupboard doors in the bathroom have seen better days, rotting at the bottom of all the doors. There was no heating in the room, no air conditioning, no trouser press, no iron, in fact it's almost a bare room with a bed. Very much 3 stars! If I travel to Dortmund again, I'll stay somewhere else. The decor is very grand but it is all a facade. I had dinner in the restaurant next door, which was typical German and OK. I missed breakfast as I was still full from the beers and meal the night before. Check out was quick as it was all pre paid.
We arrived very late. Check in was efficient. Location is quite convenient to the Hauptbahnhof - about 10-15 minute walk. Rooms are OK, mine was definitely big enough which was actually a surprise. No a/c is a problem. Would never stay here in summer. Windows open but room is right on the street so lots of street noise. On 2nd day it was "cold" by German standards (about 7C) so the staff kindly turned my room into a sauna by opening all the heaters to maximum. Very uncomfortable and unfriendly. No coffee shop or bar in lobby. We wanted to have a coffee during a short meeting there and it was not possible. Breakfast is OK, but charged extra EUR14. No gym. Overall the place is quite clean. Basically this is a 1-2 star hotel. Not sure how they get a 4 star rating because no gym, no pool, no restaurant or coffee shop or bar, and no a/c.
