Stayed in prairie cabin; too much space for a couple. Better for family. We probably should have reserved a smaller one, except our friends came along. However, the cabins overlooking the bluff looked amazing, but two beds in the same room made it difficult to share with friends. We shared adjoining cabins instead with friends, which worked great for hanging out at night; adjoining doors opened. Kind of strange last night when friends were gone and new folks were so close. Fear could get some noisy folks very close. Great location to Wine Trail, hiking, ... about 40 minutes from camping Cache R, biking Tunnel Hill. Beautiful forest. Lodge could use a lot of work... like you have a beautiful setting- open the doors, create a patio, ... Very hardy food; ate dinner one night. Ordered prime rib, med rare. Came well done; sent back; came seared- beyond rare second time! Got some beers comped, but overall, chef can’t cook prime rib??!!! And way too much salt on everything! Wait staff couldn’t have been nicer, however! Open some windows, put bar in the light, create s patio, partition the dining room so when it’s not full (it’s huge), it’s cozy.... not sure if you all are making so much money, you don’t care OR you just don’t realize how you could make the place so much better. Provide some shampoo and conditioner in the cabins pleeease; that was so ridiculous! Never went to a place with linens, coffee maker, towels, soap and no shampoo!! That is crazy when there are no stores in the area!! And this is a gorgeous park; wonderful get away. Could even be a spa. So, we’re coming back to the area, but not here. Beautiful park. But you could make it so much nicer- better blankets, shampoo, cozier areas, oh and when it’s 50 degrees, put on the fire places. While I’m writing this the TV doesn’t work- just sayin!
We were visiting from San Diego and my husband wanted to sample some southern friend chicken. All of our relatives were in agreement that Giant City Lodge was hard to beat, and we agreed. To top it off, it was unlimited on the chicken and the eight side dishes on the family meal! Green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, dumplings, biscuits, etc., were all delicious. Beware of being so stuffed you can barely walk afterward! We ate until we nearly popped.
I love this place. The food is simply delicious, and the scenery is breathtaking. Can't say enough good things about Giant City. There are great trails for hikers and a lookout tower for pictures. If you are touring the Shawnee, this is a must.
Pulling up after 25 years since last visit, it still had the same beautiful aura of being surrounded by the forest of Giant City and the rustic building that housed the restaurant. The seating area had awesome view with large windows looking out into GIant CIty & even seeing deer grazing out there. Food was good....the FIsh Fry was really good...Huge portions that didnt really need the unlimited attached to it & the homestyle sides were phenomenal. The fried chicken was a little dry... good but not great! Overall a very nicedinner & experience. Service was excellent...very attentive
We stayed the night here after hiking in the area. Nice cabin - large and clean. However, they don't provide shampoo in the room so bring your own. And my biggest pet peeve - the shower head is very low, hitting below my neck (I'm 6'1"). We ate dinner and breakfast in the lodge restaurant and it was very good. Try the fried chicken and waffles!
After our granddaughter’s graduation from SIU, we went to Giant City Lodge for dinner. Food was great! Our waiter, Murray was attentive and accurate. He took very good care of us. Would highly recommend this beautiful spot
went on a weekday for lunch at Giant city Lodge Fried chicken meal there was excellent. Recommend this place to eat to everyone that is in the area The service there was great,Love the rustic atomopshere
The lodge has a great website so we were able to understand from viewing it that the cabins are really like motel rooms/suites and the lodge does not have rooms, but a restaurant and hangout area. We chose both sides of a Prairie cabin duplex, which is a great deal. It was plenty big for the 5 of us adults, the Murphy beds were comfy, there was plenty of room to spread out your stuff. It was clean and quiet. The beds in the bedrooms were comfy and the pillows were great. Loving my privacy and also being cheap, if it was just my husband and me, we would go with the historic cabin. We enjoyed walking up to the lodge for meals. A couple of things to note: If the staff had left a porch light on at each of the rented cabins, we could have seen in the dark and ice storm which cabin was ours...but it was not. Since we had both sides of the duplex...and since I had looked at the 3d tour on the website...we knew one side only had one stuffed chair when it was shown to have two. That side was also missing its recycling bin☹️. Soap was provided but no shampoo. We asked for extra bedding for the Murphy beds cuz only a very old very pilled thin blanket was provided. I will post a separate review of the lodge restaurant. It was quiet and lovely and comfy beds and good heat and we would stay again and recommend to friends. Hilton it is not! But we wanted a cabin like experience, in the middle of a great hiking area and that is what we got!
Wonderful stay. The family that runs the lodge and cabins were so helpful and accommodating. The lodge and cabins were very clean and warm. We had dinner at the lodge and got the Family Style Fried Chicken dinner. It was very good, but the service was lacking. However, it was very busy. The hiking was amazing. It is absolutely beautiful in the fall. We are already planning on returning in the spring.
This place is rated among the best in town. Really just decent. If you're getting the all you can eat fish and fried chicken, it's really good. It's what they're famous for and very good. If you're ordering off the menu, it's really just banquet food.
