Hotel City Villach4.0 out of 5.0

Directly opposite the railway station and bus terminus stands the Hotel City. Staff greeted us courteously and were most engaging with us, proactively offering help and suggestions for sightseeing, and even went out of their way to help us to the nearest doctor when we both became ill with head colds. Rooms are lovely with superb mountain views, and they are spotlessly maintained. The breakfast buffet is lovely with hot and cold dishes with local flavour.
We booked this hotel because of its location so close to the station as we would be arriving by train and leaving again by train the next morning, having checked reviews in Tripadvisor. However it is also within very easy walking distance of the centre of Villach (a very pleasant town) which made the location ideal. The room, though a little on the small size was nice and comfortable with decent furnishings and the bathroom (toilet, basin & shower) was fine. Everything was spotlessly clean which is always our main concern. The receptionist (Bettina) who welcomed us on arrival and checked us out was charming and helpful. Breakfast was fairly standard but with good variety and plentiful, and as it is included in the room price we thought that this property represented good value. As mentioned by others, wi-fi in the room was poor and kept dropping offline. Otherwise the whole experience was fine and we would not hesitate to return if requiring accommodation in the town again. Only scores 4 because no bath, a little lacking in amenities as a 4*hotel and not quite comparable with other 4* hotels in which we stayed.
Booked this one as I was arriving on the train very late and it's right accross from the station. Having stayed there, I found it a bit expensive for what is was offering. The rooms were tight, although very clean and comfortable and about 5am, the busses in the square get going and you get woken up. Breakfast was very good and plentiful but it still did not make up for the cost of the stay. This hotel is of the Ibis format but more expensive. Otherwise, staff were very good and it served it's purpose.
This was booked on our behalf by a friend. We stayed for one night and although it was perfectly serviceable as a stopover, it was in no way comparable to a 4* hotel. The room was small, especially the bathroom. The toilet is difficult to describe without coming across as crass; but it seems to have been designed by someone who has never seen – let alone used – a toilet. More baffling was that we were given just one towel and by the time we noticed, it was already morning and we had to get a move on. Curiously, many reviews, and even our friend, seemed to suggest that the breakfast was exceptional in some way. In our view, it was exceptionally average at best. The breakfast room was cramped and very busy, and the range of food on offer –although broad – was neither special nor of good quality. The juice was poor, and the cooked breakfast options appeared rather grim. In light of the many reviews and anecdotal chit-chat, we can only conclude that the breakfast here is some sort of urban myth. The hotel itself is very basic and has the feel of a motel. We found that our one night was overpriced and not at all value for money, especially given that we were travelling around and staying in other 4* hotels in Austria at cheaper rates and in much larger cities.
Was stuck in Villach due to car problem. Spent 1 night in international chain hotel and second night in City because 1st was full. Booked into a junior suite for 145 €. Had a big terrace, clean, comfortable, big bathroom, perfect. WiFi good. They have an indoor(15€) and outdoor parking(free) Breakfast had decent choice included in room price. In front of train station, about 5/10 minute walk to center, restaurants within walking distance.
Booked 1 night accomodation, incl breakfast for an Economy Twin room. Whether arriving by train or bus, this hotel cannot be beaten for location. It is right there. It is very close to the old town too. We were graciously greeted, answering all our questions including recommendations for dinner. All staff we encountered were very professional. They looked after our bags after check out too. There is a lift serving all floors. We were allocated Room 409. Yes, it is not spacious, (we expected this as this is what we booked!) but it is serviceable. The beds are comfortable. There is tea/coffee making, a safe and a mini bar. The room overlooks the bus and train station. The window is openable. Wifi works very well. It was very quiet and we slept well. Our ensuite is cosy, but again works well. Everything looks newish and very clean. Its minimalist decor, not only in our room, but also corridors, reception and breakfast room. Breakfast is served on the 1st floor. There is a wide variety of food, regularly replenished with the coffee coming from a machine. We booked an Economy Twin Room and that is what we got. The breakfast was very good and location excellent.
Well located and easy to find, a very short walk to the town centre. Villach is a lovely town with absolutely gorgeous surroundings. The room was clean but very small, almost student accommodation small, the wifi was horrendous with very intermittent usability. Breakfast was very nice though :)
The hotel is well located, adjacent to the railway station & a 5 minute walk to the centre of Villach. The room was modern & comfortable & the bathroom large with a good shower. Breakfast was excellent- a great choice of quality produce. The hotel doesn't have a bar, which is the only thing preventing me awarding a "5".
The room was clean, big and with a very comfortable bed. The bathroom was pristine and the bath most comfortable. The staff was helpfull and friendly. Parking in front of the hotel didn't cosy anything. Breakfast included continental and full English.
Very good hotel, a few steps from the train station (which surprisingly is not surrounded by weirdos) And a little walk to the city centre. The hotel had a massive variety of breakfast, which was very tasty and satisfying. What is not making this hotel a 4* hotel are the small rooms, no air conditioning, no balconies and no many TV channels etc etc... If you're a smoker like i am, good luck if you are on the top floor. This though is a good hotel, due to its location and surroundings.
