Easy access to car park, flowing check in smooth and clean room, friendly staff. Comfortable bed hotel close to all that Cardiff offers a tourist in shopping, bars and attractions. Opposite the world famous Principality stadium as well as the castle
The entrance looks quite grand but the steps are uneven height and hard to negotiate with luggage. There is parking behind the hotel but you have to negotiate city traffic and trying to find a street park and login at the hotel before you can access it, even though there are no barrier gates. The lifts are tiny and the bathroom could do with a bit of an update. Breakfast was basic but OK. Could have been better. Location is good, right across the road from Cardiff Castle.
We did not want the usual experience of common high street low price hotels, so we chose to pay £200 per night for a double deluxe room in The Angel Hotel, but the hotel did not live up to expectations at this price point. This hotel has seen better days and is in need of modernising and cleaning. There was a faint smell of damp in the room. The bed was scuffed, the windows were dirty and the woodwork needed repainting. There was white paint spilled on the curtains. The carpets are aged. At this price point, the breakfast should not be a self-service buffet. At this price, the toaster should really be in the kitchen, not in the dining room. There certainly shouldn't be items on the breakfast menu that cost extra. Everything on the breakfast menu should be available at no additional cost, when the guests have already paid £200 to be there. The poached eggs we ordered were overcooked and some of the other breakfast items we ordered simply never arrived, despite asking several times. After returning to the hotel after a concert, the bar was understaffed. There were not enough charis and we told we could not sit in the restaurant so I ended up sitting on the floor. Ultimately we chose not to eat because we did not have confidence in the quality of the food or the organisation of the staff. The bar could not take card payments after 11pm and we told to go back to Reception to pre-authorise a card. Every other hotel has managed to arrange such basic organisation. It was simply too much effort. In summmary, I felt overcharged. The hotel and this level of service cannot command £200 a night.
I booked this hotel for a weekend break for my husband and I six months previously, directly with the hotel and was told it was a good offer at £486 for two nights accommodation in a suite with breakfast included. The suite was very mediocre, the rooms were cold, in need of repair as they were tired and basically equipped. I wanted a cup of coffee and noticed the room had been furnished with two sachets of coffee, one packet of custard cream biscuits and one tiny bottle of water only. There weren’t enough bath towels either. When we went down for breakfast on our first morning, we ordered coffee to have with our buffet breakfast and when it arrived it tasted more like warm water than coffee so I asked for it to be replaced and was told by a waitress that they couldn’t do anything any better. We then ordered two lattes which we had to pay for as additional cost of £2.00 each At 10.30am I asked a waiter for two further lattes and my order was acknowledged although I was asked to move to the bar area a ten steps away as they were clearing breakfasts for afternoon tea. My husband and I sat down for our second coffees and were told that the coffees would cost £1.50 more each as we were sitting in the bar area! I paid the extra and then complained to the manager on duty who refunded the difference. I asked for a later check out on Sunday at 12 noon rather than 11am and was told it would cost a further £10 an hour for every hr we extended our check out, with no flexibility. Having paid already nearly £500 for the suite this seemed extortionate. I complained to the manager who offered a 1hr later check out with no charge. We had been looking forward to a swim in the swimming pool at the hotel which I’d seen online and was told there was no longer a swimming pool and that the website needs updating! After the Elton John concert it was 10.50pm and we were hungry and phoned reception for some food to be delivered to our room. I have gluten and dairy intolerances and wasn’t expecting a wide range of offerings however had hoped for a sandwich on gluten free bread. We were told there was pizza and only pizza and nothing gluten free available. The Sunday morning of our check out, my husband wasn’t well so we decided to pay the £10 an hr and stay later, planning to check out at 2pm. The hotel reception range us to say 1pm was the latest we could check out. This was the first we had heard of it and I had to negotiate for a later check out at 2pm that I wanted. Everything was simply too much effort and needed to be negotiated. I stay away frequently and this was shocking by comparison to other hotels that charge similar money. Very poor value for money. So all in all - a very disappointing hotel experience. We would certainly not stay at this hotel again or any hotel in the Cairn hotel group.
We stayed in the Angel as my son and daughter in law had their wedding reception across the road in cardiff castle. The staff were very friendly and informative on our arrival, our rooms were lovely. Breakfast was great too and obviously due to the wedding there were a few of us and the staff sorted it that we were all together. Excellent would definitely be staying at the Angel again
Perfect location with a super staff. Worth a 5. Sadly, hotel is tired and needs maintenance/refurbishment. Worth a 2. We had a large room with a large cost considering the need for improvements. It was quiet, however, and we slept fairly well, although the bed was a bit too soft for our taste. Breakfast was buffet style, and there were difficulties at times keeping this topped up. We felt it was one member of staff short to ensure top service, although the staff worked very hard..
Well then, not my usual haunt in Cardiff and felt sadly let down. This Hotel has I would think a premium spot in Cardiff being right next to the castle, parks, and the stadium. It should be a premium hotel charging top dollar. It's clearly a very old building with buckets of character but lacking any sort of investment. Right to start the reception chap was very pleasent and professional so no complaint there. From there on im afraid my review goes down hill. My journey to my 3rd floor room was via a very old , small and shaky lift, a ntad unerving. The corridors are long and very wide but here you start to notice lack of any care and up keep. Just grubby and un loved. My room is on the large side for a double. But again its clean but just tired and dated. Sash windows with black mould and grime on the paint work. Bathroom is clean though. Look the room just has sockets on all descriptions everywhere, cable trunking, holes here and there in the walls, peeling paint. Such a shame. Up side, bed is comfy and clean. I chose to eat in the bar on my first evening, battered fish of the day, skinny chips and peas. Hmm, lets try frozen (clearly) battered and over cooked, standard frozen chips not skinny. Again such a shame. I ate out for the rest of my stay. Breakfast, if I compared this to one of the well known budget "Inns" it doesnt even come close, very sparse in comparsion, missing lots of things you would expect at this price. Just so little effort. I think this place has some great staff who are trying very hard and juyst looks like they are being lket down badly by no investment from the parent company. In other hands this would be a gold mine, remember the Angel as a lad was a top hotel in the town. So to the staff thanks for your efforts, Management, well take note!
This stay was a Christmas present for my friend. I paid £275 last Saturday night and the room was only just big enough to fit a small double bed in with a tiny, old bathroom. It was shabby and outdated with a window that would not open. When we arrived back at the hotel at 11pm we asked if they offered room service - we asked for a sandwich, to be told that it would take over an hour. Very disappointed - there was absolutely no value for money and I would definitely not recommend this hotel - which is a shame as the location is great and it looked fantastic on their website.
The overnight stay fulfilled our basic requirements of a place to sleep within walking distance of The Principality Stadium. So location is a big positive. Our pre-event meal was also of high standard and good value. Another positive was the dedicated hotel parking although we were extremely fortunate to find a space. On the negative side the overnight tariff was very high given the overall tired looking decor of the hotel, the cosy size of our standard room and an incredibly soft bouncy mattress. So sleep was not great and further aggravated by significant road noise in our 1st floor room overlooking St Mary’s Street.
My husband and I stayed a night for the Spice Girls concert. The hotel is ideally located near the Principality Stadium and it does offer parking. The parking was I believe 17 pounds per day and you had to walk a bit to get there. Also the parking spots are really tight. Overall, the hotel was alright. It was definitely not as fancy as the pictures make it look. The AC unit in our room also barely worked and when we called maintenance they mentioned this has been an ongoing issue for that room so they gave us a fan. In addition, my husband got locked out of the room and then had to pay 100 pounds ($127 USD) for the replacement key EVEN though we returned the key in the morning when we checked out.
