Mercure Cardiff Holland House Hotel & Spa4.0 out of 5.0

I stayed here for a night on business. I am rarely disappointed with Mercure and wasn't this time either. There is a nice lobby area and the room itself was spacious. I asked for a high room and was given one on a corner (the shape of the hotel means they have a few corners) with a great view over Queen Street station. The amenities in the room were good and there was a great sized bath and nice modern fitments. Overall, a definite recommendation. It is a little off the beaten track from the main station (18 minutes walk from Cardiff Central) but worth the extra distance. The main shopping centre is about ten minutes walk away.
I stayed here for one night, and requested an accessible room due to a back injury. The room was accessible, but as we walked in the carpet was filthy and I had to ask for the room to be cleaned, not something I'd expect for £120 a night. Also, the bathroom was clean but old and knackered, and the decor of the room was outdated. The staff were nice but I wouldn't stay here again. Might be good value if you're looking for a hotel with a spa, but otherwise I didn't think it was good value.
This is a very nice hotel. The rooms are pleasant and have both a tub and a shower. There didn't seem to be much of interest in the immediate area, but the hotel staff gave us good recommendations for restaurants a short taxi ride away. The best thing about this hotel to me was the excellent indoor swimming pool. Perfect way to destress after traveling!
I arrived late so didn't get chance to eat but I received a very good reception from friendly staff. The rooms were very clean and modern but at the time I was there the wi-fi wasn't brilliant, although I was advised it is usually very good. I will go here again next time I'm staying in south Wales assuming I can get a decent rate again.
Spend the weekend for a tattoo convention, the team was friendly and the hotel was beautiful with a amazing view highly recommended. Steve from convention was fantastic. I also enjoyed the food in the restaurant.
When we arrived the underground car park sign said it was full. We parked in a nearby street and went to investigate and found lots of spaces in the car park. Another guest getting into his car told us to ignore the sign and that it was broken. We followed his advice and drove in and the barrier lifted. We had asked for a room with a view, which we got on the 14th floor. Unfortunately the outside windows were dirty so our view was very obscured. The bathroom was nice but the shower took a good 5 minutes to warm up and the pressure was very low, so we gave up and used the bath. The complimentary toiletries were very meagre and only enough for one person so i asked for some more which were delivered. The bed was a nice size but the pillows very hard. The windows don't open which is common in hotels these days so we had the air conditioning on all night which was very noisy and meant I slept badly. Overall the decor and condition of the room was more what i would expect from a Travel Lodge or Premerier Inn than a 4 star hotel. We used the hotel pool and gym which were very nice and well maintained. The pool is a good size. We also had a drink in the hotel bar which was very pleasant and nicely decorated. The breakfast was good and plenty of food. It was the room that let it down for me and considering the price we paid i would not stay here again nor recommend it.
From the cigarette butts on the entrance steps, past the people drinking beer from cans in the reception area to our room no 903. The bathroom door hasn't seen a coat of paint in years and is dirty anyway. The toilet roll holder hanging on the wall. The shower door not able to close properly. There was no tap on one side of washbasin. There was a crack with plaster missing on the wall near the bed. This is not a 4.5 star hotel by any stretch of the imagination. The cost of the rooms are exorbitant and we really wished we had stayed at a local Ibis Hotel again at a fraction of the cost. The breakfast was an extra £15 per person per day - wow!! Consequently we gave it a miss. We will not be visiting it again and certainly will not be recommending this hotel. Disappointment after saving for a long time to visit Cardiff.
Room is spacious, hotel facility like pool is good. The only drawback is no bellman to assist you with the luggage, especially you have big luggage, there is a button to call for service if you wish to use the luggage lift but it would be nice to have someone welcoming you when you arrived. Same... upon departure, we carry our own luggage down the stairs.. other than that, hotel is located at pretty good location.
The lobby area is quite smart, but beyond this - like the exterior of the hotel - the rooms are from a decade which style bypassed. Whereas the exterior is vintage 70s the rooms are vintage 80s with that terrible carpet, curtains, bathroom suite combo you can imagine. It is very hard to find anything positive to say other than it's in quite a central location and the high floors have good views, but otherwise it was pretty charmless with insufficient parking (it was full and can't be pre-booked). My review may be biased as we paid 315 a night (Coldplay were playing), but even at the standard non-concert-rip-off rate, I'd have still been very underwhelmed.
What can i say - the room was great, the price was great. This Hotel just seems to get better and better each time i have stayed here. This will be the hotel of choice for me every time i head to wales.
