Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town North Wharf

I had such high expectations for this hotel but I am sad to say that I was very disappointed. We are a family of 4, my husband is permanently in a wheelchair, we therefore required a wheelchair accessible room, which the North Wharf offers. I also have a 9 year old and a 1 year old so the universal access room with the separate bedroom, fold out sleeper couch and space for a camp cot seemed ideal !! I was so excited to have found what seemed like the perfect room. I booked and paid for this reservation a little over SIX months in advance and called the hotel about 10 days prior to our arrival to ensure that all was in order, which I was assured it was. On arrival at the hotel we were informed that the universal accessible room had been allocated to other guests the night before !? How could this have happened when we had a confirmed reservation for the ONLY wheelchair accessible room ? We were informed that they would try to reach the guests telephonically to request that they transfer to another room ! We were allocated another room while we waited for just over six hours before we could move to our booked and confirmed room. NOT a good way to begin a holiday especially with a tired infant. The room itself was large and comfortable and did meet all our needs except for the kitchen area which in our opinion is not wheelchair friendly as it is so narrow. When my husband was in the kitchen area between the two counters he was not able to open the draws on cupboards on either side ! .The other aspect that he found difficult was the weight of the door leading into the room which is very heavy for someone in a wheelchair and he required help most of the time. This is not helpful to the self esteem of a wheelchair user who wants to be as self sufficient as possible. Overall the impression that I formed during our stay was that of one of distinct lack of attention to detail from there being no room service menu in our room, to our tissues not being replaced when they were finished, to our in room crockery and cutlery never been increased from the standard set of 2 to 3. We were hoping to spend some time at the hotel pool but I have to say that it is a very unwelcoming area which looks like it doesn't see many guests at all and is certainly not a feature of the hotel. We actually went next door to another hotel and used their pool which was sparkly clean and inviting. We did however find the staff at the hotel to be very friendly and always happy to assist when asked. After our stay I received a customer satisfaction survey via e-mail to which I replied with all of this and more and now 2 weeks later I still have not received any response from the hotel whatsoever. yet another indication of their indifference. The hotel is well located and has much to offer such a pity that it did not live up to our expectations and quite honestly really spoilt our once a year family holiday.

Reception of this hotel is dated and unimpressive. I was mentally writing the letter of complaint to my travel agent when the room became available. Well the rooms are a huge surprise - large with lots of amenities and a very comfortable bed. Breakfast is reasonable but nothing special to write about. Hotel is very convenient for the hop on hop off bus. Reception are helpful and uber drivers have no problem finding the hotel. Its a bit out of the way for the V&A waterfront

Did not actually stay at the hotel but have used their facilities for training purposes. Great venue for such their function room will hold 40 people comfortably with projector, tv and audio equipment all available. Staff very courteous and friendly. We have tried food from their lunch menu and was very good. If using for corporate events etc would order with plenty of time for lunch as it can take some time if busy. The business operations manager is very friendly and will do anything he can to help . Perfect venue for any corporate events or training needs.

We were very pleased with this hotel for the first two nights of our stay in Cape Town. Excellent service throughout our stay. The rooms are very spacious and even include a washer/dryer combo unit. We asked for some detergent at the front desk and was given some free of charge. There is a small charge for parking, but much more reasonable than other places I have stayed. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again if we make it back to Cape Town any time soon. We booked this hotel with Marriott points and felt like it was an excellent value for the number of points that we used for the redemption.

We chose this hotel on the basis of its proximity to the waterfront, car parking, and gym facilities. It delivered far more than we expected - our room was actually a suite with lots of space, equipped with a full kitchen and washer-dryer. We had a corner room so had large windows to two sides, and a balcony on one. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. We were able to walk to places like Bo Kaap, the V&A waterfront and Green Point park. The underground parking was secure. WiFi was excellent. We couldn’t have asked for more!

We had a two bedroom aparthotel. Wow. What a beautiful space. Two King size beds...the kids loved it. 3 televisions.... 2 full bathrooms The bed was so comfortable. The hotel is in immaculate condition and there are so many lovely restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance.

We were fortunate to be able to book a 2 bedroom apartment- when we walked in wow! Great for our family and full kitchen, washer, two bathrooms and three balconies! Great luxury and room- super clean and recent remodel. Would highly recommend staying here- would return! Nice staff and lovely, great location

You can have a big apartment with all needed machinery: dish washing, clothes, oven, microwave. A separate bedroom and a large sitting room. Very clean and new. I wanted to spend the day inside especially with the unexpected bad weather we had.

We spent a week at this hotel. We had a two bedroom apartment (which reminded me of a time share - they have one, two and three bedrooms) clean, comfortable, fast friendly service and a friendly staff. Great for families or anyone sharing a room. You will have your space. There is a living room area, a dining area with chairs, a fully loaded kitchen - fridge, microwave, stove, oven, dishwasher, washing machine, toaster, iron and board. Dishes, pots and pans, and lots of counter space. You may want to prepare some of your meals if you have time, however, the food in the restaurant downstairs is good and they serve a delicious breakfast buffet. They have discounts and specials during the week on restaurant meals if you choose to stay in. This hotel is central to the downtown area, the Wharf, sight seeing, the straw market and the hop on bus stops close by. One concern - WiFi can be an issue - you must constantly log into their network once your device shuts down or locks. I spoke to the front desk and they stayed the IT would look into it but the problem continued the rest of the week. Outside of the need for consistent wifi - I would definitely stay at this hotel again!

Part of the Marriott chain.. Located in mid center city in Capetown. Which makes it easy access to sites, restaurants and transportation. Close to the river walk area where there are many shops, restaurants etc. Nice clean rooms and helpful staff.
