If you are looking to get away from it all, this is a great hotel. This hotel is located very northern part of the Medoc. The rooms are spacious and very nice. The staff is lovely - managed by a husband and wife team. Wine tasting and tour of Rolland de By and their other family of wines was wonderful. Rolland de By happens to be one of my personal favorites so this was a treat for me. I highly recommend this place.
We had an amazing time here. It's boutique hotel standard and the managers couldn't be more helpful. They set us up with tableware to have picnics in the garden, got our bikes out ready for us every morning and when I left my sunglasses behind, drove out to find us and return them! So so kind. The breakfast was amazing and the whole stay thoroughly enjoyable. The grounds are beautiful. I can't speak highly enough of this place. Thank you!
On a cycling holiday with a group of friends, this was an ideal place to stay - a quiet and scenic location, beautiful rooms, charming hosts and a wonderful breakfast in the garden each morning. And we had excellent recommendations for dinners nearby.
Rarely do I have to give this rating yet ,in a case of willful deception,I feel it is fully warranted. The place bills itself as a hotel which it is not, there is no staff after 8PM and the guests are on their own using an access code. Tripadvisor labels it a Bed and Breakfast, closer to the mark but the breakfast is not included in the very high price. It calls itself a Chartreuse, which in French does mean an isolated country house. That is an apt description, you are in the middle of nowhere except Medoc vineyards. No reason to go there except to get a visit and tastings of the Chateau Rollan de By, This was indeed promised in the advertising and the reservation. Upon arrival, the lone, part time receptionist claimed that besides reserving a room we should have reserved the tasting and since we didn't,it could not be done. When confronted with the fact that the reservation voucher did in fact include the tasting, she reluctantly proffered half hearted apologies suggesting a visit to the neighboring Chateau de la Tour de By instead. We did attend that visit by a competitor and it was fine. What did transpire was that the lone, defensive and testy receptionist could not do the tasting because the place was short handed and she could not leave her desk. As an excuse she made up that we should have reserved the tasting ahead of time. As to the accommodations,we ended up in a renovated ground level room with a large bathroom and plush furnishings(but no air conditioning) . The place does not have rooms with twin beds,we ended up with a ridiculous four poster bed that was so high off the ground my wife had trouble climbing on it. You can hear every steps of the guests above you since interior noise insulation is minimal. There is no restaurant and none in the vicinity. To add insult to injury, prices are way out of line with the services provided. To get there signage is poor but you are better off not finding the place.
Our stay at the Hotel Rollan de By couldn't have been better. The small boutique hotel is beautiful, with large comfortable beds and clean, well-appointed rooms. The location is perfect for exploring the Medoc countryside and is within a short, picturesque drive to some of Bordeaux's most famous wine chateaux as well as to the sprawling beaches on the Atlantic coast. The free wifi is fast and reliable and breakfast on the terrace was fresh and delicious. Would certainly recommend for a relaxing, romantic holiday.
The hotel is on the grounds of a wine estate. The rooms are all very comfortable and well appointed. Whilst there is no air conditioning, fans are provided to cool the rooms. The hotel does not do evening meals, but there are pleasant village restaurants within a few miles- though no local taxis. Breakfasts are good. Where the hotel really scores is in the quality of the hosts- Benjamin and his wife. They were helpful in the advance booking, but really came into their own where our travel plans were being scuppered by striking French rail workers etc. All arrangements were made for us. It wasn't a question of going the extra mile; they went an extra marathon! This included making all arrangements for eating, and for pre arranging tastings at our designated wineries. As if that wasn't enough, it was Benjamin who conducted the tasting into the interesting wines of Rolland de By, and its sister chateaux. All in all, a model in how to provide a true welcome.
We stayed for 3 days . What an amazing find! The rooms are spacious, well appointed and beautifully decorated . The comfortable 4 poster bed is to die for . Above all, Benjamin and Deborah are the perfect hosts. Charming, friendly and helpful . They go the extra mile, nothing is too much trouble for them and they seemed to effortlessly anticipate our every need . Their hospitality is second to none and I would whole heartedly recommend this hotel to anyone looking to spend time in Medoc .
We stayed for 2 days during our mini-moon. Located in a very peaceful spot, just nearby Chateau La Tour De By. Most amazing restaurant La Maison du Douanier just a 5 minute drive. Receptionists welcomed us with very nice breakfast and was hugely helpful to figure out Chateau visits around Medoc. Can only recommend!
This place was so great. Amazing peaceful and the people that work their are so friendly and helpful. Rooms are large and comfortable. I would highly recommend it for someone looking to discover Medoc.
big call i know... Benjamin and Deborah run this Domaine owned hotel on the vineyards of the Medoc region and everything from check-in to check-out was absolutely wonderful. the rooms are very tastefully decorated, with a luxurious four poster bed and a large bath and separate shower in the bathroom. the amenities were also top-notch with lavender bath salts and beautiful soaps replaced daily with a vanity kit including all sorts of indulgent touches. the bed is one of the most comfortable i have ever slept on. the building itself is beautiful and faces east so in the morning you have the sunrise over the vinyards, truly beautiful. the breakfast is certainly worth the price and every day, we were treated to fresh pastries, bread, cheese, eggs, fruit, coffee, juice - all fresh local produce that was served with a smile in an elegant dining room. what set this place apart from other 5 star properties though was the down to earth nature of Deborah and Benjamin. All the little 1%s were there, booking in our wine tours, recommending wine choices for dinner, booking in restaurants for us, giving us a tour of the Rollan de By wine cellars and vat-house - and just the personable nature of both of them who made our stay so lovely and welcoming. If you are looking for a lovely trip into the Bordeaux wine region, you would be hard pressed to find a more perfect experience.
