As you walk through the double automatic doors on way to reception and only one works that speaks volumes for this flea pit. An awful lot of things don't do what they should. The heating ! After 3rd Time of asking reception a guy came with tools to turn heating off, why any heating is on at all is ridiculous as people still walking around in shorts. The lift makes a worryingly screeching sound so thought would use the stairs which last got carpeted in approximately 1978, really grim. The sauna doesn't work, the steam room doesn't work, the pool is tiny. Didn't even have a cup to make a brew and got passed around from pillar to post to get one. Noise from road is huge. There is other alternatives locally, try them.
Stayed as a couple on a sat night. Got a triple room instead of a double so loads of space. It was fine for one night. The decor could use updating especially the bedroom ceilings. Overall a good stay, staff are friendly and helpful.
When we arrived, I couldn't believe that it looked nothing like the photos online! There was tape across the carpets, the room smelt of public toilets, it was dark and run down. Also, I informed them we had a wheelchair but they didn't mention there was only stair access to the dining room. I would never stay here again!
Stayed here for two days with work - after reading previous reviews and not looking forward to staying - check in was easy the lady on reception was polite and pleasant - there was a large amount of us arriving at once and it was well organised and hassle free. The room itself is tired and needs some modernising - walls need painting, new carpets etc but the room was spotlessly clean - I spent a while checking everything (after reading the reviews) but I could not find a fault with the cleanliness - I had a double bed and single bed the room and bathroom was large - with a bath and shower. Good working free wifi free tea and coffee. My bed was fairly comfortable the room a bit chilly but nothing to really worry about - I know some rooms were really hot so I'd prefer a cooler room anyway. Food was provided by the hotel the first evening and it was actually really good - chose from the restaurant menu and while there was a bit of a wait to take our order food was served and was decent quality. This hotel probably isn't ideal if your looking for a luxurious stay in Birmingham but for a night or two when your not spending much time there it is ideal - very basic, needs modernising but clean great location and cheap.
Not visited Birmingham for a while. And every time when I do visit, Cobden Hotel is for me :) I get really disappointed when I need to visit Birmingham and they are fully booked. I love staying there because staff is friendly and really look after their guests, good reasonable price too. I was served by Doras (hope I spelt the name correctly) and Vanessa , super service as always and very friendly. Cobden Hotel's location is very convenient and is in easy reach for Bull Ring for shopping, Mail Box for restaurants and cinemas at Five Ways.
Good size room although the decor looked very out of date and tired. Parts of the carpet where threadbare and parts of the furniture had the corners knocked off. Shower looked a bit ropey but worked etc. I was woken at 2am by noise and the room was warm (almost too warm). Having said that staff was friendly and the breakfast good - help yourself buffett - hot and cold breakfast. The place was very clean. I would stay here again - although not if it's for a family / romantic holiday!
If you know this hotel you must be asking WHY on earth, have I given this Hotel 5 stars? Its for the fantastic staff, that are really friendly and helpful and keen to ensure your stay is as it should be. Also the location, extensive free parking, hot water and free Virgin WIFI make value added experience and value for money. The hotel’s look on the website is very good and the sports gym and swimming facilities is what drew me to spending two days here. That said, unfortunately, the hotel and the facilities didn’t live up to my expectations. The pool is a little smaller than what I thought and on Sunday morning was unusable because it was being used by an exclusive Mother and baby group. Also the £5 per person per day, extra would of added £20, to our bill, which I considered a little expensive. The outside of the hotel is presentable, the inside is dirty, shabby, tatty and in need of regular maintenance, decoration coordination and deep cleaning, if not demolition. (see photographs). It was just lots of small points, such as the dirt, dust, missing things, and neglect, that combines to make a depressing experience and if I could, I would give the hotel minus 5 stars, if its lovely hotel staff had not have been so positive and helpful as if they were caught up in a war, that was not their fault and was out of their control. I guess the worn carpets, (see photographs), should have given us a clue as to what to expect? Then in the room, the mismatch of colours (bagie, red walls, (with dents)) with blue carpets and headboards, and dark and light wood, worn and damaged furniture, two dangerous sharp metal brackets under the table, ill-fitting draws, NO FIRE ESCAPE INFORMATION on door or in the room) (see photographs), only one set of towels and no TV remote control. The dirt and dust and need for a deep clean was evident (see photographs). In the bathroom, the toilet seat was very thin flimsy plastic, the sort you get from a value hard where store for a couple of quid. It was unstable and made me feel sea-sick and shocked by the sudden random movements. When you gave the loo a full flush, the ceramic cistern top would jump 20mm and crash back down! As well as dirty grout and black mould on the white silicone sealer, the missing bathroom items included :- curtains, grout, bath and sink soap dispensers (brackets left), broken hook on door, something else (black raw plugs in white tiles) and a door lock in bathroom (see photographs). In the room, stained and dirty carpet, wonky lights, missing paint, dents in walls, missing wall paper, chipped paint, damaged furniture, dirt and dust (see photographs) all added to a look of very poor maintenance. The bed mattress was of orthopaedic and gives a similar experience to sleeping on the floor, this is a bit like camping and not too bad for one night, except for the springs poking in to you. However, two nights or such a hard, bumpy surface becomes painful, and we could not sleep as there was no sleeping support areas, just discomfort and painful body bits. As for the food.... I saw the quality of the food being served for lunch and the evening and decided to eat elsewhere as I don’t buy barging basement value ready meals and choose not to eat them. Breakfast was an experience. There were leading brands of cereal (Kellogg’s) and yogurts (Muller). The rest was industrial catering quality. All the hot breakfast, was very hot, steaming hot and the coffee was over brewed.
Pleasant man at reception, really polite and accommodating. The hotel itself is in desperate need of a make over. It was fine for the amount of time we needed it for but I will not book again unless I knew it had a refurbishment. It is in a good location for the centre with plenty of free parking.
I booked a room at this hotel for the body power weekend. The room online looked a lot better than it was when we arrived. The mattress wasn't comfortable but for £60 for two nights it did the job. Had to pay extra for the gym and facilities which I thought were included within the price. Benefits of the hotel is that they allowed us to check in late and check or early.
I've stayed here with a large group of friends who just wanted cheap and cheerful to stay over in Birmingham to watch the cricket. It doesn't paint itself as 5-star but if your not fussy about tired furniture and a hotel showing its age then this place isn't going to be too bad. It's just outside the centre and cheap as chips with decent enough food and friendly staff. If you want fancy decor and modern settings don't go here, if you just need a place to lay your head then this is ideal and won't break the bank.
