We enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Nice big room with a lounge chair, desk, large TV and fridge with mini bar. The bathroom was dated but still in good condition and spacious. The location was great only minutes to bars and restaurants. We found a nice place around the corner to have breakfast called Wiche cafe and bakery. Breakfast at the hotel was €20 a head so Wiche was a better option for us. Staff were friendly and the rooms were clean with nice crisp linen on the comfortable bed.
Just returned from a wonderful stay at this charming hotel in the beautiful city of Bilbao. Lovely rooms with every facility you need and excellent staff to look after your every need. Will definitely stay again. El Figon in the same street does lovely food at superb value for money.
As per many of the other reviews for this hotel we were underwhelmed and surprised it is 5 star!!! The staff were all polite and pleasant enough to deal with however nothing about the facilities, rooms or service hit 5 star expectations. As this was our honeymoon the hotel kindly upgraded us to a superior room, and this was the only reason we didn't feel the money we spent was totally wasted. There was no complimentary water in the room, an espresso machine was provided but over and above 2 capsules you were charged! This was little annoying as there were 2 of us for 3 nights. The bed was an old sprung mattress that was so uncomfortable, the pillows were really bad as well. On complaining to reception they provided additional pillows but could obviously do nothing about the bed itself! The bathroom had seen better days, obviously not seen by management since the hotel refurbishment in 1990! The shower head itself was thick with limescale and the bath handle falling off. The aircon was non exsistent and for this hotel to claim it has free wifi is simply an untruth! When we asked at reception why we couldn't seem to use the wifi we were told it was because the hotel was full! On arrival we saw a sign saying the restaurant would be closed for the duration of our stay, for a supposed 5 star hotel with such limited facilities to not inform its guests of this prior to arrival seems tardy. The bar was only open for a few hours a day, and not the hours when you may want to relax! Restaurants typically open in the area from 9 pm, and the bar is closed by 11pm! The concierge seemed to be a table with 3 magazines on it! In the entire 4 days we were there we saw no one! Thank goodness for trip advisor! The only redeeming feature of this hotel is the location! Everything worth seeing is in walking distance and there are some fantastic restaurants near by.
If you love older hotels, this place is for you. Classic old skeleton door keys. Leather lounge chairs. The service is excellent and the people are friendly. The hotel is not modern and new so don't expect that. But the rooms are very clean, the linens crisp and white. We stayed 4 nights with 1 teenager. Rooms were large for Europe. We had an issue with the air conditioning, they checked it, asked us again the next day, then moved us to a bigger room. Great follow-up. Also excellent location, walking distance to everything. Nice bikes to rent. Would stay here again.
We arrived in Bilbao on the Brittany ferry and drove straight to the hotel. It is an old mansion that has been beautifully converted into a small hotel. We were given a great welcome by the helpful staff, who immediately helped us unload the box from the top of the car as it would not quite have fitted into the garage. The hotel is small and we felt it was much more personal than a large hotel, certainly from the attitude of the lovely staff. The decor is beautiful, particularly the dining room, which has a nautical theme which appealed to us as we are all sailors. The meal was delicious. We were advised that although there were six courses plus artisan bread and olive oil beforehand, each course was small. But in the event there was more than enough as the main meat course of pork fillet with peppers and mashed potatoes was copious, and more than made up for one or two of the smaller servings of things like the vichyssoise cream with cheese mousse. In fact we didn't think we would manage the dessert of vanilla jelly with red fruits and passion fruit sorbet - until we saw it, that is, and changed our minds! At €40 euros including as much wine as we wanted, and coffee, it was excellent value. As other reviewers have mentioned, the hotel is very central and within easy walking distance of the Guggenheim
Mid range price hotel.offering good level of accomodation and service. Staff always polite and helpful. Breakfast tasty and properly prepared. Good location in Bilbao not far from the middle of the town.
Near the Guggenheim, shopping and restaurants. Clean comfortable room and great buffet breakfast. Highly recommended. Interesting black and white rooms. Helpful front desk staff who will assist with reservations and directions.
This hotel is located in the center of the city and close to all attractions. The hotel is kept very well and the staff if very friendly. We highly recommend the Pixtos bar across the street. ride the Metro for easy access to all corners of the city
I've had a press cutting of this hotel for the past six months after it was featured in the Times of London's travel section as one of the best boutique hotels in Spain. So, expectations were high when we travelled as a family, saving this hotel and Gehry's Guggenheim for last after a week in the Basque country. We expected a buzzing place due to its excellent location downtown, but were completely underwhelmed by its ambience, which was fusty and the opposite of buoyant. It felt as if nobody was staying here. The bar was deserted and despite the efforts of its waiter who wanted to make ANYBODY a cocktail, the hotel felt in siesta-mode all day and night. The room was OK and the service acceptable, but there was nothing five star about this, hence the two-star review.
What an awful experience. Very grumpy check in staff and when we got to the room it was like a prison cell, tiny with a very small window overlooking a very drab court yard. The carpet was dirty and the bed tiny. The bathroom door has seen better days. I have no idea how this warrants its 4 star rating, I would not give in 2 stars! Be warned, there are much better hotels in Bilbao centre and you will pay less.
