One of the worst hotels I’ve ever stayed in. Reception staff to busy talking to another member of staff while we waited. Stair carpet thread bear stuck down with gaffer tape, big hole around the key hole, stains on the carpet in the room, enough dust on the window frame to grow potatoes in as well as the skirting boards, the radiator in the room had paint flakeing off. Avoid room 81. The hotel looks very impressive from the outside but the inside a total let down

Nice hotel, great location

I booked a last minute stay for one night for my mother, son and myself. Communications were excellent before arrival, parking in hotel car park was easy and check in was efficient. As it is a listed building there is no lift which was an issue for my mum who struggles with stairs ( we were on top floor) but for myself and son, it was fine. We stayed in room 52 in the main original building. It was huge, nicely decorated, a newly renovated white marble effect bathroom and a separate bedroom with a pull out sofa. It was clean, bed was comfy and had everything we needed for a one night stay but the room was hot ( even with radiators set to 0 it was like a furnace). Once we’d had the windows open ( beautiful view onto garden) it soon became bareable. There were also fans in the cupboards if you needed them. The room dated back to the 1600’s and there was a big fireplace in it which was atmospheric. It was called ‘fathers dyneing room’ spelt that way and although we all slept really well in the comfy beds, a little part of us all felt there was something about the other room attached that was creepy , not sure why. A really peaceful nights sleep. Breakfast wise, located in the great hall, was impressive. Good selection of hot and cold food, nice pastries and fruits etc. Only negatives were - Hotel was being redecorated and there was a lot of thick dust on banisters up stairs where you hold on and carpets felt dusty. Should be cleaned really.

Good if a need with some love and attention!

The hotel is in a lovely location and the reception area and bar are very lovely to sit in. You almost expect Miss Marple to pass on through! The hotel is perhaps a little tired looking, but it does look like they are renovating and my double room was good especially the bathroom which was clean and looked reasonably new. Wifi was good, and the hotel was warm, very warm in fact! The coridors and expecially the carpets need renewing, but they were varnishing the wood work while there (wish I saw the wet paint sign before touching the banister!) Breakfast was excellent. Good choice of food. The only thing the room was not cleaned during my stay which may be by design, but wasn't mentioned, which meant I had to reuse cups (no big a thing for 2 nights and it makes it more eco friendly!)

Could be a gem

Whilst i appreciate this hotel has been reopened a little over a year and some refurbishment is underway the guest experience still gives an overall impression of tiredness The cleanliness and attention to detail of the rooms needs to be improved … sink dirty, not enough towels for the guests in the room. Breakfast area window shelves fall of dust! Painting underway in the stairway of the hotel … health and safety an issue I would be concerned with as loose sheeting over the staircase whilst workman in progress. The gem of this hotel are the staff in the bar and restaurant who are friendly professionals so thanks to our afternoon barman and Mel and Rees. This cannot be said for all staff as feel receptionist on check was abrupt without being courteous and as other guests have commented is eager to point at check in time .

Very grand from the outside and in the entrance, however lots of very tired decor and furnishings, including lots of debris under the bed and stains on the carpet. The receptionist was not very talkative and we didn't entirely feel welcomed until we met the cleaner and bar staff who were lovely. Nice to have free parking on site, but access was a bit tight. Breakfast had a good selection but was quite greasy and had been left under the hot lamps a bit too long. Also would have preferred freshly made tea and coffee.
