Hotel Vila Gale Tavira

We stayed at this hotel before and like it because it is very close to the centre of Tavira, reasonable value for money and a reasonable place to stay. Staff are okay and the place is clean enough. I was a little disappointed this time as the place appeared just too overcrowded. This was particularly noticeable at breakfast. It was very difficult to find a table. The dining room was just too crowded with the tables crammed in. I enjoy my coffee but it has to be decaffeinated. The only decaffeinated coffee on offer at breakfast was instant. This is appalling. Why shouldn't decaffeinated coffee drinkers be treated the same as everybody else. To be fair we only had to ask the staff and they would get us a decaffeinated coffee from the bar but we felt awkward asking particularly as staff appeared so busy. They got the coffee willingly but it took some time.

We enjoyed our stay at the Vila Gale Tavira, which is one of a group of well-regarded Portugese hotels. The location is excellent and it is within walking distance of the river, shops, restaurants and many of Tavira's historical features. However do not expect any water views from your hotel room - except for the swimming pool! Bedrooms are not over large, but are comfortable with excellent beds and attractive bathrooms. Like the rest of the hotel, they are very well maintained and cleaned. Knowing the proximity of local restaurants we booked on a bed and breakfast basis only. On the one occasion we eat in the hotel restaurant for dinner we found the buffet option very average. This restaurant does not open until 7pm, which is clearly far too late for the bus loads of elderly Germans on half-board who made up the vast majority of clients while we were there, as a line formed outside the door at 6.45pm and every seat in the restaurant was taken 30 minutes later. There was a scrum of people in front of every buffet station, some of whom were not afraid to use their very sharp elbows, and we found the whole dining experience very depressing. We were glad that we did not have to do it again, and were delighted to use some of the local restaurants, which were very good and inexpensive. Two minor criticisms of the hotel: we found the bedroom safe did not work until we paid an extra 2.50 euros a day extra - how ridiculous. Why not put a euro on the room rate? Also one of the pair of elevators we had to use was out of action the whole 5 days we were there; obviously either Otis or the hotel management were in no hurry to repair it. There was a notice apologising, which we called "Miss Otis regrets"! We can recommend the Gale Tavira hotel, but suggest it is used on a bed and breakfast basis. The breakfast is pretty good.

We stayed here in March 2018 on a Jet2 holiday. The hotel is clean and comfortable and all the staff are very helpful. Breakfast is a buffet and at busy times it can be a bit of a challenge. This is not the fault of the hotel of course, more to do with the manners of some of the guests. Our stay was on bed and breakfast basis, we ate in the hotel on our first evening because it was convenient. The meal was very good with lots of choice. We ate out in Tavira the rest of the time and found several nearby restaurants used by locals and tourists. A meal with wine can be had for around €20 for two. The hotel is ideally situated for walkers and sightseers. A 10 minutes walk takes you to the salt pans for bird watching. The railway station and the picturesque Roman bridge are also only a few minutes walk away.

This hotel is wonderful and would love to stay here again. All the staff are extremely helpful and can't do enough for you. Hotel very clean and spacious. Pool area lovely. Cannot fault the hotel. Stayed for B&B only, the breakfasts were fantastic with plenty on offer. Hotel in good location. Can't wait for next visit.

Stayed here recently for a week. Apart from our own group of golfers attending an international competition there were quite a number of other guests. Have been staying here for 10 years at this time of year and have always been impressed with the professionalism of the staff and the quality of service, which has always been in line with its 4 star rating. This visit left me so impressed with the quality of food that I spoke with one of the managers who informed me that the head chef has been encouraged to extend his menus and be more creative. Whatever encouragement was given it has worked and the quality has improved immensely. Well done 👨‍🍳 As a place to stay in Tavira it is probably the best and caters for all types of guest.

Have been returning to this hotel for some 5 years with a group of friends. It is in a great location in an area with some wonderful walking. Tavira itself is a superb place to stay, particularly in the off-season as it has interesting buildings and is not over-developed with hotels, unlike some of the Algarve resorts. The Vila Gale is a good place to stay with very friendly and attentive staff. The breakfast buffet is excellent as is the dinner buffet, but a tad expensive at £24. However there is a vast array of good value restaurants in town. The one downside is the terrible lack of storage space(particularly drawers) in the rooms for 2 people staying for any length of time. Before the so-called refurbishment last year, the rooms had plenty of drawer space, but someone, who has obviously never stayed in a hotel room for more than one night at a time, has decided that minimal is good! One more three-drawer unit would make so much difference!! Looking forward to coming back again - but will bring my own storage unit!!

I enjoyed my stay. The hotel has a very good atmosphere created by the staff. I had a junior suite to myself. In all that space there are 3 small drawers for clothes! The walls are still paper thin. The buffet is relentlessly repetetive we didn't graduate to the a la carte. The bar prices are very reasonable especially in happy hour. It's an interesting position. The Market opposite and in the other direction the lovely town of Tavira. It is looking tired now and could do with a refurb.

I have been coming to this hotel for a number of years Great position for Tavira town and golf Excellent value Clean and spacious Good food too A tiny problem with a continual flushing loo was quickly sorted , Irene who was on reception was efficient reassuring aleays , helpful and courteous Felipe (Philip) in the restaurant sorted out a table for us even though the restaurant that evening was very busy fuss just did it !

Excellent breakfast buffet, pleasant staff , central location would stay again. Good pool area and lobby, rooms were clean, front desk very helpful getting information about the area. Felt safe walking in the area.

This is the second Vila Gale hotel we have stayed in and both where equally good with excellent helpful staff and facilities. The food is always of a good standard with plenty of choice for all diets. A good central location with ample parking nearby.
