Catania has managed to distinguish itself as a vibrant Baroque-styled city, with unique sights and sounds to boot. Once you're in the city, you'll want to find the Piazza del Duomo, which acts as the city's focal point. It's decorated with a towering Baroque cathedral, a mixture of limestone and lava, and even an Egyptian obelisk. The square itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Near the square, you'll find the famed Pescheria, one of Sicily's best and most eccentric fish markets. Heading a bit west from the downtown piazza, you'll find the Museo Civico, located inside the 13th century Castello Ursino. You may also encounter the Museo Belliniano, a museum dedicated to Catania-born opera composer, Vincenzo Bellini.
If you fly to Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA), you will no doubt see the towering and intimidating Mount Etna from your window. The airport is located about four miles from the city center, and the Alibus 457 shuttle will take you downtown.
Catania is an interesting city to walk through as it was designed specifically to allow people to escape a potential volcanic eruption more easily. Through your travels, you may find Roman ruins or the quaint Via Crociferi neighborhood where you're sure to discover quality Italian eats.
