Find the best car rental deals in Flagstaff, Arizona

Occupying an iconic position on the historic Route 66, Flagstaff is inherently tied up with the romance of American road travel. While Downtown is fairly small, renting a car is the easiest way to explore the city’s further reaches, and the canyons and forests that lie beyond. Let Orbitz help you find the best deal.

Flagstaff is also a popular starting point for adventures in the incredible Grand Canyon National Park, and a pleasant stopover on your journey. You can fly into Flagstaff from Phoenix or catch a train – many find that this is preferable to driving all the way from Phoenix Airport, a journey of several hours.

Flagstaff and beyond: Three destinations by car

Flagstaff combines some great cultural attractions with a magnificent natural setting – here are three recommended destinations.

Grand Canyon National Park

Top of the list for any trip to Flagstaff has to be the jaw-dropping Grand Canyon National Park. One of the world’s great natural wonders, the canyon has to be seen to be believed – and even then it’s difficult to process its sheer scale.

Enjoy a leisurely hike along the canyon rim, backpack overnight if you’re feeling adventurous, or take a multi-day whitewater boat trip down the Colorado River.

Journey time: Around 75 minutes

Distance: Approximately 74 miles

Sunset Crater

The natural attractions near Flagstaff don’t end with the Grand Canyon. Sunset Crater is the site of a volcanic eruption in the year 1064 AD, which covered the region in lava flows for miles around and left a crater 8,096 feet high.

Hike or bike through the volcanic landscapes, and visit the Wupatki National Monument – the remains of the Native American villages that sprung up here after the eruption.

Journey time: Around 30 minutes

Distance: Approximately 20 miles

Tonto National Forest

For a contrast to the wide open plains and yawning chasms of the Grand Canyon and Sunset Crater, venture into the dense pine woodlands of Tonto National Forest.

Cycling, horseback riding and camping are all great ways to experience the forest up close, while bald eagles and herons are among the creatures you can spot at wildlife viewing areas like Needle Rock.

Journey time: Around 2 hours 45 minutes

Distance: Approximately 130 miles
