The Flight from New Orleans to New York

The 1,150-mile journey north from New Orleans in Louisiana to New York City takes just under three hours, although you’ll spend less than two-and-a-half hours in the air – the rest of the time is spent taxiing to and from the runway.

If you draw a straight line from New Orleans to New York on the map it would run right down the middle of the Appalachian Mountains, but your plane will fly along one side of the range. The route to the east of the mountains Takes you over Alabama, Georgia, South and North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. This route is quicker but sometimes weather conditions and air traffic mean the plane will take the slightly longer route to the west, flying over Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio.

Most flights are on board a Boeing 737 or Airbus A319 jet with space for well over a hundred passengers, but some are on smaller jets, such as the Embraer E170, which carries around 70 people.

Whatever the model our aircraft will be flying at around 35,000 feet and travelling at speeds of up to 500 mph.

Although the flight is domestic it pays to arrive at Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans well before you are due to take off. When you book your ticket with Orbitz be sure to check if luggage is included in the price, as some airlines charge extra for checked in bags.

US citizens will not need a passport but will have to show some form of government-issued photo ID to board the plane. Non-US citizens will need their official travel documents.

Louis Armstrong International, 11 miles west of downtown New Orleans, handles around 12 million passengers a year. At around 1.4 meters above sea level it is the second lowest in the world, after Schiphol in Amsterdam.

The airport is just off Route 61, meaning that Interstate 10 is easy to get to by bus, cab or car. If you are driving there are thousands of long stay parking spaces available. After checking in there are plenty of bars, restaurants and cafes to relax in before boarding your flight. The airport also has four music stages so you may get to catch a live performance before you fly.

All three of the major airports in New York have excellent transport links to the city center, and you can easily hire a car or book a hotel for your stay when you book your flight online with Orbitz.
