Description

As you tour the capital of Morocco, get a sense of its history dating back to the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and the Almohades. See the Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and the Kasbah of the Udayas. Enjoy an evening in the city, taste local specialties, and get a look into the medina.

Rabat became the capital during the French protectorate, a decision maintained when Morocco declared independence. An entirely new town was built between the medina, the Hassan Tower, and the Kasbah of the Udayas–all of which you see on your visit.

Spot the Rue des Consuls, the street where ambassadors and other representatives of foreign governments were obliged to live until 1912. From the foreign embassy district, through the Bab Zaer gate, see Chellah, a once prosperous necropolis destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and now covered with palm trees, hibiscus, banana, and fig trees.

Visit the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, opposite the Hassan Tower, commemorating the king as well as his sons, Moulay Abdallah and King Hassan II. At all times the Royal Guard watches with flowing red and white burnous and ceremonial rifles. Spend the night at the Hotel Rabat in the city center and enjoy a free evening to explore the great bistros, restaurants, and bars, and maybe the nightlife.

On Day 2 cover sights of interest such as the Archeological Museum and St Peter’s Cathedral, with a trip across the the Oued Bouregreg bridge to the thriving port and former pirate stronghold of Salé. Have lunch at Dar Zaki, inside Rabat's medina, and try some local specialties before returning to Casablanca via the coastal road and Mohammedia.
