Popular Routes from Toronto to Ottawa

The 225-mile flight from Toronto to Ottawa takes just one hour. You can fly from either Toronto Pearson International or the smaller Billy Bishop Airport to Ottawa Macdonald–Cartier International Airport.

There are dozens of flights every day with Air Canada, WestJet (which flies from Pearson International) and Porter (which operates out of Billy Bishop).

The Toronto to Ottawa route is part of the Eastern Triangle, Canada’s busiest air corridor that also has connections on to Montreal further east.

The Flight from Toronto to Ottawa

Ottawa lies northeast of Toronto and after taking off your plane will head along the northern shore of Lake Ontario before heading inland in a straight line towards Macdonald-Cartier International.

As the flight is a relatively short one, planes tend to fly at around 24,000 feet, much lower than for longer journeys, and after reaching a top speed of up to 500mph your aircraft will gradually decrease speed as it glides in towards Ottawa. This helps save fuel and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Although the flight time is around an hour, the plane will only be in the air for 45 minutes. The rest of the time is spent taxiing to and from the arrival and departure gates. A variety of different aircraft operate between Toronto and Ottawa: there are jets, such as the Boeing 737, and propeller planes, like the Bombardier Dash 8.

Although the flight is domestic, it is still a good idea to arrive at the airport and check in at least an hour before you are due to take off. If you have baggage make sure luggage is included in the ticket price – some airlines charge extra for checked bags.

You will also need some form of photo ID to board the plane, and non-Canadian citizens should bring their passport.

Even taking travel time to and from the airport into account, flying is the quickest way to get from Toronto to Ottawa – trains take more than four hours and the drive can take even longer, depending on traffic.

Toronto Pearson International is located 14 miles northwest of downtown. There are trains, buses, cabs and there is plenty of parking available if you are driving. The airport is the biggest in Canada, with 50 million passengers a year, and there are dozens of shops and restaurants where you can relax before your flight.

Billy Bishop Airport is even more central, it’s on Toronto Island in Lake Ontario just two miles from downtown.

On arrival at Macdonald-Cartier International in Ottawa you can take a bus, shuttle or cab into the city center which is just six miles away. There are also hire car facilities, but if you want to reserve a vehicle you can do so when you book your flight with Orbitz.
