Many of the major airlines servicing the San Francisco airport offer flights to Miami, including United, American, Alaska Airlines and Delta. Expect a nonstop flight to Miami to last roughly 5 hours. If you drive yourself to the airport, you have a few parking choices. The multilevel domestic parking garage is just a short walk from the main terminal and charges a parking fee of $36 per day. The long-term lot charges $18 per day, and it offers free shuttle services to and from the terminal building. You can also use one of the city's taxi, private car or limousine services to get to the airport, or take the economical route and use public transportation, such as Caltrain or BART.
Most of the dining venues in the airport are popular chains or smaller versions of local favorites. You'll find full- and quick-service eateries in each of the terminals, such as Cat Cora, Euro Café, Fung Lum and Max's the Greek, to keep you busy while you wait for your flight.
Miami is a very popular vacation destination for domestic and international visitors, as evidenced by the more than 13 million guests who stayed in the city in 2011. Whether you want to get out on the water, party all night long or sample some authentic Cuban and South American cuisine, Miami is happy to oblige.
The Miami International Airport is located just 4 miles west of downtown Miami, offering easy access into the city. Miami tends to have balmy winters, with temperatures ranging from the low 60s to the mid-70s. Summer temperatures, however, can soar to around 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The air tends to be very dry, and there are constant breezes coming off the ocean, making even the warmest weather tolerable. Hurricane season in southern Florida runs from June to November. If you plan to visit the area during this time, make sure you are aware of your hotel's hurricane preparedness plans.
Families visiting Miami will find plenty of things to do, including the Miami Science Museum, Monkey Jungle, the Miami Seaquarium, the Miami Metrozoo and Jungle Island. If you just want to explore the city, be sure to spend some time people watching in Coconut Grove, get a taste of Cuba in Little Havana and watch the manatees that frequent the lagoons in Coral Gables.
