From San Diego to Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, located in Mexico, is a popular tourist destination with residents of the West Coast of the United States. It boasts a rich history and culture dating back to the pre-Columbian period. If you travel from San Diego to Puerto Vallarta, you can find budget deals on Orbitz.com to get the most from your money on airlines such as Alaska Airlines.

San Diego

As the second-largest city in California, immediately adjacent to the Mexican border, San Diego is the first European West Coast settlement in the United States. Flights from here to Puerto Vallarta leave from the San Diego International Airport, which is located about 3 miles northwest of the city.

You can get to the airport by public shuttle or by the Metro Bus. The Metro Bus carries passengers to the airport on Route 992, stopping at Terminals 1 and 2 as well as at the Commuter Terminal. On weekdays, you can expect a bus to arrive every 15 minutes. If you choose instead to drive to the airport, you have several parking options. General parking lasts up to 30 days and is offered at variable rates. Long-term parking costs slightly less per day. If you are looking for refreshments while at the airport, you can drop by the Starbucks at Terminal 1, Gate 10 for a coffee to wake you up. The airport has restaurants to suit virtually every taste, including Starbucks, McDonald's, and Jamba Juice.

Puerto Vallarta

This city is known for its tourism. In fact, tourism accounts for more than half of its traffic. With its location along the Pacific coast in central Mexico, Puerto Vallarta is a haven for beach-goers.

Experience "The World's Friendliest City"

You'll land at the Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport, located just north of the city next to Banderas Bay. Most people use the public bus system to get around because little parking space is available in the city. It's likely that you'll be staying in the Hotel Zone of town, so look for buses that have the word "Hoteles" on the front window to be sure you get the right route; you cannot transfer from one bus to another without paying an additional fare.

Puerto Vallarta has a two-season tropical climate. Expect temperatures in the low 80s virtually year-round. Temperatures can reach the 90s in the summer, and you can expect heavy rainfall from June to October, most often occurring in the middle of the afternoon. Most people visit the city between January and March, when the weather is at its mildest. The waters of the bay keep the seasonal temperatures even, so you shouldn't experience wide variations. Bring light-colored summer clothes and suntan lotion.

The main draw of Puerto Vallarta is the copious beach scenery. Whether you want to lie on the beach and read a book or engage in water sports, you can enjoy yourself in this area. Snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming, and sport fishing are all popular tourist pastimes. Of course, there's more to the city than the beaches. Check out the Plaza de Toros if you want to see a bullfight. If you come in late October/early November, visit the Botanical Gardens for the Diá de Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival.
