If you want to swap Columbus, ‘the biggest small town in America’, for the ‘Big Apple’ of New York then make sure you book with Orbitz. We offer all the best prices on domestic travel so you’ll be sure to find a cheap flight.
There are around 20 flights from John Glenn Columbus International into New York every day, and you can choose from any of the Big Apple’s three main airports – John F Kennedy International, LaGuardia or Newark.
Airlines including American, American Eagle and United Express operate flights from Columbus to New York.
It takes just under two hours to make the 480-mile journey from Columbus to New York by air, however the plane will only be in the air for around 80 minutes, with the rest of the journey time spent taxiing.
Rather than flying in a straight line from Columbus to New York most planes head northeast after takeoff, rather than due east, towards Lake Erie. They then follow a loop north of Pittsburgh and across to New York. This route takes you over the Allegheny Mountains and across Pennsylvania. The exact flight path will depend on weather conditions and other air traffic.
The flight is domestic, so US citizens will not need a passport, although you will need some form of photo ID to board the plane. Non-US citizens will need a passport. It is advisable to get to the airport well in advance of your scheduled departure time, especially if you will be checking in luggage. And remember that some airlines do not include bags in the ticket price, so be sure to establish whether you need to pay extra for checked suitcases and backpacks.
Columbus Airport was renamed in 2016 in honor of astronaut and US Senator John Glenn and underwent an $80m renovation. It is the second biggest airport in Ohio, with 7.5 million passengers a year and flights to dozens of destinations in the US, Canada and Mexico.
It is easy to get to the airport, which lies six miles east of downtown Columbus, close to the I-670 and I-270. There are regular buses from the city center and plenty of parking if you drive.
Once at the airport there is lots to do before you board your flight. John Glenn airport has a good selection of bars, restaurants and shops, including a PGA Tour shop for golf fans. Alternatively, you can prepare for your flight with a massage.
When you arrive at New York there are plenty of ways to get into the city center. Most flights arrive at LaGuardia, which lies between Queens to the south and the Bronx to the north. It is not on the New York subway system but there are buses, taxis and hire cars available at the airport.
