Johannesburg is the economic hub of South Africa, but it's also a loud, proud city with a rich and diverse heritage for visitors to explore.
Start your visit by heading to the central Market Theatre area for lively music, bars and galleries. After, make your way to Hillbrow, to take in the Johannesburg Art Gallery, and the views from Top of Africa in the Carlton Centre. You'll also find the South African Museum of Rock Art here, which features fascinating exhibits on mankind's earliest history.
In the affluent northern suburbs, Johannesburg Planetarium is a popular destination for tourists. Art fans will want to visit the Cherie De Villiers Gallery, which focuses on local art.
Flights into O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) land 13 miles from the city proper. Once you're through immigration, it only takes 30 minutes to reach Johannesburg.
Take the Gautrain line from the airport to Sandton, and then change for Johannesburg. Taxi is a hassle-fee option but make sure you choose a licensed cab with a meter.
Don't miss a tour to Soweto, to explore the Mandela Museum and the Apartheid Museum. Make time to visit Johannesburg Zoo, where you can see a variety of indigenous wildlife, as well as many other events.
