Although Caracas is the capital of Venezuela, it isn't necessarily a hotbed of tourist activity. Its frenetic populace and high population make it difficult to get your bearings on straight. But, if you can manage to find tranquility in the bustling pace, then Caracas can be an interesting destination.
When you fly to Simon Bolivar International Airport (CCS), you'll be about 13 miles outside of the city center. The focus of activity is on the tree-lined Plaza Bolivar, which offers a statue of the nation's liberator, Simon Bolivar. For about three blocks, the roads are all pedestrian walkways, so you won't have to worry about frenetic pace interrupting your stroll. In the district, you'll find the National Assembly building, City Hall, a 17th century cathedral, and a couple of museums, including one on the site of Simon Bolivar's birthplace house.
In the east of the city, you'll find the Sabana Grande, a commercial street lined with dozens of shops, restaurants, and cafes. If you want an authentic look at Caracas life, the Sabana Grande is your spot.

Hotels in Caracas can get expensive. There are cheaper hotels near Sabana Grande off the Avenida Libertador. Public transit is efficient, if crowded. The Metro rail line is comfortable and air conditioned. Buses will take you to many points of interest within the city. Taxi cabs are also relatively inexpensive.
