From the weather (90 degrees, cloudless, perfect) to the events (day parties, outdoor concerts) to the restaurant scene (BOOMING), it\u2019s high season for <a title=\"California vacation packages, hotels and travelon Orbitz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/App\/PerformMDLPDealsContent?deal_id=CA&amp;cnt=PKH\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>California vacations<\/strong><\/a> in the City of Angels. And whether you\u2019re visiting L.A. for a week or you\u2019ve lived here forever, your schedule will be as jam-packed as you can handle.<br \/>\n<strong>New to the city in summer 2009\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> A classic restaurant gets a celeb spin: Top Chef Stefan Richter has taken over the former L.A. Farm in Santa Monica, and is reopening it August 6th as <strong>Stefan\u2019s at L.A. Farm<\/strong>. Sleek d\u00e9cor and sophisticated Euro snacks characterize the latest incarnation of this former beach barn, which used to be one of the loudest dining rooms in town.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> Also new to Santa Monica is <strong>enomatic wine bar Pourtal<\/strong>. Enomatic is a dispenser system &#8212; kind of like the wine aficionado\u2019s versionof \u201cbeers on tap.\u201d Pourtal\u2019s draw is not just its by-the-glass variety (40 wines on pour), but its <strong>themed tasting flights and special events<\/strong>. Some are one-offs; others, like Rare Wine Wednesdays, are part of the regular calendar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nWest Hollywood can hardly keep up with its slew of recent openings &#8212; and these aren\u2019t small places, either.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Moving\u00a0 into the old Morton\u2019s spot on Robertson and Melrose is <strong>Cecconi\u2019s<\/strong>, a classy and cool concept by the team behind New York\u2019s Soho House.\u00a0 Already <strong>this gets a lot of celebrity traffic<\/strong>, but don\u2019t expect a velvet rope to appear anytime soon:\u00a0 Offering <strong>three square meals a day for surprisingly reasonable prices<\/strong> (breakfasts around $9, dinnertime pasta for $15, and pizzette or Italian small plates for $12), Cecconi\u2019s is obviously going for regular business, not special occasion one-offs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_921\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-921\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-921\" title=\"mexico\" src=\"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/mexico-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"California vacations\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-921\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mexico<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>What\u2019s orange and pink and drunk all over? A margarita in <strong>Mexico<\/strong> &#8212; not the country, but the brand-new Sunset spot, owned by David Nicola of Nic\u2019s in Beverly Hills. Just as Nic\u2019s is the spot for martinis, Mexico will be the home of <strong>fresh fruit margaritas and Nuevo Latino nibbles<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> Also in WeHo, the new <strong>BOA Steakhouse<\/strong> flagship on Sunset Strip. At 13,000 square feet including 4,000 square feet of patio dining, this is a much more impressive space than the original restaurant\u2014a glossy but tiny haunt in the <a title=\"Grafton on Sunset on Orbitz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/App\/ViewSpecificHotelLP?masterId=5142\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Grafton hotel<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> Currently moving into BOA\u2019s modest former space\u00a0 is <strong>Olives, the poshie Mediterranean\/French-inspired bistro by Todd English<\/strong>. This is the same restaurant concept as English operates in Las Vegas, and is one of the most exciting openings of 2009 for me &#8212; now I can get gourmet flatbread and fruity mojitos without having to brave the Bellagio breezeway.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> On Sunset, the pretty little <a title=\"Luxe Hotel Sunset Boulevard on Orbitz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/App\/ViewSpecificHotelLP?masterId=49893\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Luxe Hotel<\/strong><\/a> is hosting a weekly <strong>Sunday jazz brunch<\/strong>. With patio seating, mimosas, <strong>made-to-order crepes and a raw bar<\/strong>, this is perfect for a special family occasion or an indulgent brunch with the girls.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> If you\u2019re looking for cocktails and a tough door, check out <strong>Guys\u00a0 &amp; Dolls<\/strong>, which moved into the former Guys space (Beverly and San Vicente) so smoothly that hardly anyone even noted the transition. Now helmed by nightlife impresario Michael Sutton, it\u2019s got <strong>DJ music<\/strong> instead of live jazz,\u00a0 a club crowd instead of private parties; and normal hours where Guy\u2019s was seemingly only open at the management\u2019s whim. It\u2019s a less original concept than before, but some reliability might be what this venue needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_922\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><imgclass=\"size-medium wp-image-922\" title=\"playhouse\" src=\"https:\/\/www.orbitz.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/playhouse-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"Los Angeles hotels\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-922\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Playhouse<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>One of the coolest concepts to hit Hollywood this year &#8212; and it is a new concept, not just the same-place, different-sign shtick &#8212; is <strong>Playhouse<\/strong>.\u00a0 Housed in the former Fox Theatre , it combines elements of a <strong>performance art space, cabaret theater and upscale nightclub<\/strong>. Staff will be costumed; guests taken care of in economy-conscious ways like free shots for guests who get bottle service, and discounted door prices plus shuttle service to club-goers who take mass transit. The space is currently <strong>three levels, with four bars<\/strong> and 750-person capacity. It opened July 9th, to instant max-capacity crowds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> The downtown scene continues to grow, with a new buzz spot opening nearly every month. Everyone you talk to seems to have their favorite secret: One insider assures you, \u201c<strong>Bottega Louie<\/strong> [restaurant\/bar\/market\/patisserie] is THE place to see and be seen.\u201d Meanwhile, foodies praise <strong>new French brasserie Church &amp; State<\/strong>; its modern d\u00e9cor and generous portions suits the burgeoning industrial \u2018hood. Elsewhere, <strong>Octopus joins the ever-more-competitive sushi scene<\/strong>, and <strong>Yxta<\/strong> is the latest in a slew of gourmet Mexican kitchens to open in Los Angeles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li> Absolutely not to be missed while downtown is the second location of <strong>Bottlerock<\/strong>.\u00a0 The Culver City original was a friendly, informal, clatteringly loud take on a modern wine bar. This location is much bigger but still keeps the elements that made it fun:\u00a0 <strong>1000 wines are on the list<\/strong>, and you can open \u2018most any bottle if you buy two glasses of it. Additionally, there\u2019s a <strong>good beer list with 14 microbrews on tap<\/strong>.
